Steve's Journal: The Saga Continues....

Oh I plan on giving them all a spin at some point! I was just thinking the Black Tip would be a good starting point for me. I just did a quick search on the bay (I’m supposed to be working so it was a very quick search

) and I found at least one of each variety.
Good hunting!

I have a '57 Flare Tip that SWMBO stole from me. It is in fact a very very nice shaver and it is my dad's birth year. I ordered her a Blue SHE-Gillette off the bay and just haven't decided if it is a Christmas gift or if I want my flare tip bad enough to give it to her early.

Not only are blades different for everyone, they are also different in different razors for everyone. Except Sharks. Those things suck universally.

As to the blade chart it really is a YMMV type situation. Over at the other place a guy did a test of an insane number of blades and formulated a really good system of rating them. I cant remember who it was or wasn't though and I am not sure about everyone but his results were similar to my feelings on the ones from his list I had tried at the time.

Haha I’d wait the extra month and do with the gift idea. That way you get your Flare Tip back and you look the good guy!

As as far as the blades, I realize it’s a very YMMV thing. And also varies razor to razor. So it’s difficult to nail down. I’ll just have to experiment. Nothing wrong with that!

Afternoon shave today.

Still rocking the RR Tech II loaded with an Astra SP.

Soap was WSP Barber shop with matching AS. Not sure if I mentioned before but the scent is very similar to GTB but without the smokiness. Really good!

Sticking with the Tech II for the rest of the month since things went so well last month with the same approach.

I adjusted the angle to be a bit steeper today to see if it improved the closeness of the shave. It didn’t seem to make any difference. I also paid very close attention to the pressure, or lack thereof, and that did make a difference. No alum sting afterwards and very little AS feedback. So that was a plus. The irritation is almost zero!

Still lacking a bit in the closeness department, I would put today’s 3 pass with touch ups on the neck at a CCS+ to DFS. I’ll take it considering there’s no irritation and it still looks acceptable. Plus...it’s saturday so who cares! ???

Tomorrow will probably bring a blade change. I might try something I’ve never used before, or try to research what I have and go for something sharper to see if that helps with the closeness, or do both!

Off to see Bohemian Rhapsody in a little bit. Looking forward to movie theater popcorn for dinner tonight!

I needed A good shave today, and got it.

Razor: Tech II
Blade: Ladas Stainless Steel
Brush: Stirling Kong Synthetic
Soap/AS: WSP Barbershop

Still dialing in the Tech II, I swapped out the Astra SP looking for an improvement. I found it in the Ladas. I went with the standard 3 pass and neck touch up and landed on a solid DFS. I might even say DFS +!. I also ended up with possibly the least amount of irritation ever. So that’s awesome lol!

As for the need of a good shave...

After coming home from seeing Bohemian Rhapsody (which was awesome) we had to take our dog Willie to the emergency clinic at the University of Penn. he was there for back surgery a year ago and last night had another flare up. Thankfully they sent him home prescribing some pain meds and strict rest, but then this morning he was having a hard time. So we had to take him to a local vet. Ultimately he’s back home and resting. He’s actually probably feeling real good from the shot of pain meds he got this morning! But it’s gonna be a long 6 weeks....

Thanks Chris!

Not sure where the Ladas line up on the sharpness scale, so far I’m enjoying them.

As for the pooch, we were back at a local vet today because he wasn’t doing his business. With his back condition that can be indicative of serious problem. But we’re pretty sure it was just due to discomfort. My wife also works at a vet (not 24/7 or we would’ve been there today) do tomorrow she’ll take him in for a second opinion. We’re pretty sure he just needs to rest and heal.

Really sorry about your dog. My wife and I own two dogs currently...or rather they own us. My oldest dog Chauncey - a male dachshund , hurt his back a few years ago. He was actually paralyzed and was unable to use his hind legs. Our vet recommended that we check out acupuncture. I kid you not! I was very skeptical at first but the wife and I looked into it. He is the thing...there is actual real science behind it. The vet we use for acupuncture, she actually teaches aspects of it at the LSU Vet School in our area. Anyway...we took him in...in about two sessions we was moving his back legs...four sessions in he was actually able to walk on his back legs, just a little wobbly...and by six sessions he was running around like he was a puppy. We take our younger dog Allie to acupuncture for anxiety (she was a rescue dog and has sever anxiety with some things). I am not going to say that she is cured of her anxiety...but it does lessen it tremendously. Anyway...it cures and relieves pain for all types of issues. I had someone tell me once that it's just all in the dog's head and they healed themselves. Dogs are funny...there is no such thing as a Placebo Effect with dogs. They are just always in their present state. I know this is long winded...but if your dog has some issues that can't be taken care of with a regular vet or with rest...you should look into it. And just for the record...the vet that performs the acupuncture...she is a full on Veterinary Physician. As soon as I can find some pics of the little guy...I'll post them!

Thanks for the info Don! I’ll definitely look into that. I know That he definitely has degenerative disk disease. Basically he ruptured a disk in his back, it leaked the fluid that is inside it, and it calcified. That causes the discomfort and in some cases paralysis. Surgery is basically the only answer once it gets to a certain point, but acupuncture may be something we can try to prevent further disks from rupturing. Stopping him from pretending to be Superman and flying off the couch will probably help too...lol

Your guy has really cool markings by the way! Is he a dapple?

Real sorry for the Pup. They're definitely family and don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise. Hope he begins to make a full recovery!

Thanks Chad. Our pets are definitely part of the family in this house. Sometimes they get better treatment than the humans that live here lol.

Tonight’s Shave:

(sorry, forgot to take a pic again tonight ?)

RR Tech II
Ladas Super Stainless
Stirling Kong Synthetic
RR Santal Royale
Pinaud Clubman

Another great shave from the
Tech II/Ladas combo. DFS to DFS+ all around. A bit more irritation than yesterday, but nothing too bad. Can’t complain.

Decided to get crazy and mix the Santal Royal with some Clubman. Not literally, just pairing the soap and AS. I’m not THAT crazy. Lol. They ended up pairing well, at least to my nose.

Update on the pooch. We took him back to the University of Penn today. His condition hadn’t improved at all and by the time we left Penn he had actually gotten worse. So we opted for surgery. We’ll find out tomorrow how many discs are affected once they do an MRI, but ultimately they’ll go in and clean out the calcified fluid that’s causing pressure on the spinal cord. So we said our goodbyes and left Willie in the excellent care of the doctors and nurses at Penn’s vet hospital. I know he’s in the best hands in the area, possible in the country, but I’m still nervous for my little guy. Surgery will most likely be tomorrow afternoon at some point. So if you believe in prayers, good vibes, virtual high fives, or anything else that might help him I’ll take them!
