Quando Omni Flunkus Moritati - The Possum Lodge Oath ("When all else fails, play dead")

Just noticed this today. I have long dreamed of joining Possum Lodge. Loved the Red Green Show.

Comments: Another Drug Store shave using more pedestrian software. Spent the morning with Mama looking over the newly opened fitness facility at our local Community College. They are opening up use of this facility to retirees and alumni. As it turns out I qualify twice! It’s very nice and very clean. All new equipment with instructions and pictures so I have some guidance so as not to injure myself. It’s proximity to home takes out an excuse toward using the place through the winter.

The Hardware: I believe we are near the limit of the service life on the Personna 74. At 34 it’s more shaves than I expected, and would probably have been even more had I not removed and flipped the blade. It’s still serviceable, but the comfort of the shave has dropped precipitously and I figure it’s proved its mettle (see what I did there?)

The Software: Van derHagen products show up on the shelves in various places at our Grocery, but not nearly so often in my CVS. It’s a smallish put of pretty hard soap, but it loads quite nicely. I’ll practice my google-fu to try and find out more about it. It smells pleasant and makes a passable lather. It probably be better if I spent a bit more time with it. I detect a slight floral note, but that’s about it. Barbasol... nuff said.

The Shave: the comfort of this blade is dropped off quite a bit and I’m going to call it, more from boredom than anything more. I’m sure I could easily get more shaves, but I’ve got enough blades that I don’t have to put up with uncomfortable shaves. Three passes to a CCS with no alum stings. Proof positive there’s more there.

Hard to argue with a month from a blade, Rich. Pushing the last few shaves isn't worth it..... unless you're at 27 days, then the extra 3 ARE worth it. 🤪

I’m hoping to just trim the gut a bit and keep after that shoulder. If I end up looking like master Oshi, well, that would be ok! Knowing me, I’ll get small and wiry like I was in my soldierin’ days.

Comments: I failed to press the record button, so most of the shave was lost. In a nutshell, I am looking at the difference between Personna injector blades vs current production Schick blades. Both sport a pronounced compound bevel. The primary bevel on the Personna appears to have been set with significantly more coarse abrasive. The secondary bevel is more acute on the Chick blade, my eye is not good enough to discern the quality of the finish on this bevel.

The Hardware: with both razors set at the same setting, blade exposure appears to be the same, or near enough for my purposes. What else can I say? ‘Jectah Love!

The Software: The Spouse unit requested this soap so I complied. This one is a favorite and perfect for this unofficial face down.

The Shave: Both Blade’s felt just as smooth, through three passes, but it became clear the Personna was not removing as much as the Schick. I was quite ragged on the Personna side, so took a fourth pass S - N to even things up a bit. Spouse unit concurs the Chick side was a better shave. Perhaps the razors are different despite liking the same. I will try it again but don’t plan on perusing this comparison any further. I’m just looking for a blade to face off against the Vector when it comes.

I looked a bit for Personna blades but never found them. Chicks work very well for me.

You have a Vector coming? Will it be Schick v. Schick blade?

Comments: Round 2 of this Personna and Schick side by side. Simply switch sides with the Razors. My understanding is that Supply blades are Personna also, so I know where to go if Personna pulls it out.

The Hardware: As yesterday, with both razors set at the same setting, blade exposure appears to be the same, or near enough for my purposes. Following my gut, I bumped up the aggression on the Personna razor. Perhaps calibration What else can I say? ‘Jectah Love!

Comments: Final round for this test. I’ve switched blades and reset the aggression to the original settings. This should tell us if the differences I found was the blade or the razor

The Hardware: No changes from last shave other than transferring blades from razor to razor.

The Software: PdP is simply a great soap that smells great And performs excellently. Being triple milled, it’s very hard and it doesn’t take long to load.

The Shave: I figured switching razors would put these blades on an equal footing. But the Personna continued as it did in the other razor. It was super smooth, but wasn’t removing hair. I’m befuddled on this, but alter the first pass, I did a visual and the amount of beard reduction side to side was undeniable. It looked like I had not shaved the Personna side! I would think I would at least feel some tugging or something. After 3 passes, I just finished up with the Chick. Clearly it (for me) is the better blade. I may re-try this solo with current production Personna blades at some time to see if I need to revisit this comparison.

Ya weird. When there's a lack of hair removal it usually comes with something uncomfortable as they try to get tugged out.

User-error! The difference between a Personna and a Schick is just longevity for me; 2 weeks from a Personna, a month from a Schick.

It could very well be me. That’s why i switched razors. Could also be a not so great blade. I have a pack of supply blades that I will try a whole shave with to try that theory.

My advice (actual advice, not normal Sam "advice"): Only eject a blade when you're going to toss it. Don't fiddle around with re-inserting them.

Razor: Feather AC/SS - Feather ProGuard
Soap: Stirling Iced Pineapple
Scuttle: Captains Choice
Strop:
Brush: Stirling Badger
AS/EdT: Stirling Iced Pineapple

Comments: Artisan Appreciation Day: Stirling @Joe Hackett Iced Pineapple is a well loved soap on the Cadre and I chose it because what tribute would be complete without this masterpiece. Putting in some laps with the Feather to maintain my skills. Found it a little awkward on my neck. Need to practice a bit.

The Hardware: This very razor is the one that inspired me to enter the AC world. The SS is a proven and well designed weapon of whisker destruction. Feather blades are renowned for their sizzling sharp edges.

The Software: Iced Pineapple brings a whallop of menthol with its great pineapple scent. It, as with all of Joe‘s soaps are the touchstone by which all my soaps are compared.

The Shave: I need to get some more work in on my straight shaving technique! I found myself feeling a little anxious as I went about what used to be routine passes. I got three nice passes in on the strength of the razor, not of my technique. I’ll be watching some films as I search for a work-around for a finger that remains less than cooperative. Whiskers were still removed and I got a great shave. Just not in an elegant fashion I would prefer.
