Rich's Journal: Adventures with Life and Sharp things

Man that slim is nice looking, makes me want to get a few of my old razors jazzed up. ...but then I’d have to shave with them.

You said you’d have 6 weeks of PT, you should be about half way through it. Wish you luck.

Well, the good news is you're getting closer to the end of the PT regimen. Sorry to hear that its got you tied up, however. Get well, and there will be time to catch up on everything when your hand is better!

All caught up Rich

I am kinda leaning on keeping the Miata, although I love the feeling tooling around in the ol'Benz. Mostly the reason is the air conditioner works in the Miata.

Saturday Night Double Feature:

DE Shave
Razor: Gillette Old Style / Gillette Rubie (3)
Soap: Proraso Cypress and Vetyver
Scuttle: Crown King 12oz.
Strop: Mitchel Mogal #824 Horsehide
Brush: Sorrentino TSC Legacy Tuxedo
AS/EdT: Rich's Bootleg Bay Rum DFET
Sound track: None

The Stuff:
These razors I am told have a reputation for the handle cracking due to undue stress from press fitting. Mine is no exception. A small crack that allows the head to rotate easily, but not without a bit of friction. I will perform a bit of stunt shaving before effecting repairs. Continuing with the Rubie and trying out the Sorrentino on cream soaps. This time I apply it to a cold brush and face lathering, which this brush seem to excel in.

The Shave: I am oh so happy to have a SafetyCat on station with the "Helicopter Razor" but if I keep a finger on the top ferrule it seems to keep things from getting exciting. This is a very mild razor when it is not gimbaled and trying to kill me. I have since effected repairs with epoxy and brass tube. I fully expect it to be even better next try. On the second and third passes, the head kind of locked up and shaved like a non-stunt razor and was quite nice. I believe I will keep it. Especially since it was a gift from a dear friend. Of Course any Sorrentino is great, but The Legacy model is Epic! of course I've only used it twice so I am just as likely still deeply in lurve with it.

Comments: Wow! did we get some epic storms yesterday! I sat in the garage with an old Meerschaum and Escudo watching the light show. During the lull between downpours I managed to get quite a lot done. Shipped the lawn tractor (that I'm not allowed to operate but still do) for new tires because I beat, pried, swore, pulled, swore some more, saturated with penetrating oil, beat, shouted at and then, made an obscene gesture at and called the repair people to come get it and change the tires. Then in an epic move of breathtakingly poor judgement, I decided since it was raining gently, it might be a good idea to buff out the dead paint on the Benz. The results were very very good, but I failed to change into work approved clothing and got buffing compound spatter all over a black shirt and navy pants I was supposed to wear to a play yesterday evening. I was able to scrub out the evidence and run them through the washer before SWMBO got home.

Straight Shave #307
Razor: Radium 6/8 Swedish steel.
Soap: Proraso Green
Scuttle: Crown King 12oz.
Strop: Mitchel Mogal #824 Horsehide
Brush: Sorrentino R2D2 Boar
AS/EdT: Proraso Green
Sound track: None

The Stuff:
Since I've graduated from PT, I feel I have enough hand strength to attempt a Straight shave and this old Radium was the first one I saw when I opened the drawer. Having used the Legacy brush the other day, it seems cool to use the other with a similar soap but with warm water and a scuttle. Proraso Green was one of my first favorite summer soaps and I don't see it losing it's seat any time soon.

The Shave: At some point in this shave I had at least two SafetyCats in the Den. They were cycling in and out and standing guard duty in the hall when they weren't keeping and eye on me. I only plan on two passes tonight and, having not used this razor in a while it is comforting to have the cats to keep the bad guy at bay. Wow! the last time I used this razor I stropped it on pasted balsa. Maybe this is something I should bring back into the regimen. It is as smooth and keen as most any of the razors in the fleet. exceeded only by a few that have seen the improvement in technique with the Jnat and Coti before I went and sliced up my hand. Two passes and I am at a DFS- that I could easily bring up if I want to.

Comments: Making preparations just in case we lose power to another line of storms passing I wrestled the generator into a safe position and ran a drop-cord down to the basement so no more floodage. I anticipate a whole house generator before Christmas as our Tax present to ourselves. In the meantime, reading about this Keto diet and finding it interesting even though I am only 30 to 50 pounds over my standard specification. I'm an older piece of equipment, I feel entitled to be out of spec a little. Dangit. So it's Southern Fried Cabbage tonight. I shall increase my personal carbon footprint by 50% tonight.

Respectfully Submitted,
Rich

Alas no pictures of tonights shave, but an interesting shot from Tuscon of a couple of folks having eaten too many Jack in the box tacos.

Great shaves Rich! Your restore on the OLD is brilliant, requisite crack, but right as rain.

And what’s up with those cars? Someone pour acid all over the backs?

Great write-ups Rich in your triumphant return to the straight shaving realm!! Glad to hear the hand is beginning to feel better and that you've graduated from PT.

If you live where I do...If I had a new car that was super fancy, but the A/C was out....and a 30 year old clunker that had a functioning A/C...yup...I'm keeping the clunker!

Great couple of shaves and reads Rich!

Great picture!

Glad to hear that your hand is better!

Not to say that either of your cars are clunkers (sorry if that was the impression I gave), but more to illustrate the importance of A/C.

Glad to hear the safety cats seem to be stepping up! A whole house generator doesn't seem like a simple thing for install or keeping it storm ready. When you lose power, how long can it be out for?

Usually not for long, but it has been out for as long as a week. The reason I am in favor of this solution is it automatically starts and runs the whole house as if nothing happened. It runs on Natural Gas and all I need to do it run it occasionally and keep the oil clean. I timed how long it takes for the sump to fill up when it's at full flow and it will flood the crock in less than a minute. Something weird changed with the way our water table flows water through the tiles. In the meantime, I'll have to just stay vigilant.
