Rich's Journal: Adventures with Life and Sharp things

Catching up on your stuff Rich..but the only thing I actually remember reading was...You Sold You '68 Camaro!!!

I was thinking the SAME THING!

BTW, Rich, the Groot pix were most excellent! Especially the last one.

Catching up Rich!

Great shots of the TSC brush!

Great shaves and pictures!

I know the feeling on having to part with a beloved vehicle. I regret selling 3 in my life time, a 66' Mustang, 289 engine at the time I sold it cranking out 300+ ponies! 85' GT Mustang, 1st new car I ever owned. 78' Chevrolet Sierra 3/4 ton 4x4, small block 400, 4 inch lift, 38" tires. She got 6 mpg, uphill, downhill, pulling a D6 Cat. She could pull the horns off a Billy Goat.

  • Straight Shave #306
Razor: 11/16 Dorko 172 Inox Stainless
    Soap: GTB
    Scuttle: Crown King 12oz.
    Strop: Mitchel Mogal #824 Horsehide
Brush: Sorrentino Custom Legacy Tuxedo Brush
    AS/EdT: GTB
    Sound track: None

The Stuff: Today marks the maiden voyage of both the Sorrentino and for the freshly honed Dorko. This special edition brush was part of a very small production run for the first members of The Shaving Cadre web site. The 26mm tuxedo half moon knot was very much to Mitten's liking when I showed it to him in the sink. He has very recently allowed me to place light items on him while he is reclining in his guard post.
The Shave: Hot lathered the GTB in the King Scuttle. It's been a while since I've been so off on my water balance, but after a couple of adjustments I managed to get a great shiny lather. The splay of the knot is great for my face and applied a great base for todays shaving operations. Today's use of the Dorko was actually an audible. I finished the honing last night after I had taken SOTD pics. The Toe failed testing in a spectacular manner and needed some additional time to get it all even. Even now, it is still needs a little bit of of work. It is wicked sharp at the heel and reasonably good at the toe. The blade has a bit of a taper and perhaps that messed me up a bit I don't know, but it's going to be as sharp as my Henckell very soon. I've still not found any ties between Dorko and Henckell aside from being from Solingen. Three full passes and a bit of cleanup and I land deep in DFS Territory. SafetyCat posed for a couple of pics but quickly left when I tried to put a bottle of GTB A/S on him and when it slipped and made a noise, he removed his backside from the area.

Comments: For reason unknown, I removed the fiberglass top from the Miata. Hours later we were subjected to a gully washer of a storm that lasted through the night. I guess that makes the top nice and clean after it's long storage. Now I'll figure out a way to hang the top up in the garage to get it out of the way.
I can't find the words to describe just how much I appreciate and enjoy the Brush. The wood is so cool and knowing that there isn't another exactly like it on the planet brings me a special kind of joy. He all have exactly the same unique brushes that are shaped and finished exactly the same, but each is unique as we all are. I like that.

I didn't realize that some Dorko razors were INOX - interesting. I do know that Solingen razors are outstanding! Nice pix with the new brush!

Excellent shave and read, Rich. Good to hear that the tuxedo is Mitten-approved lol.

Darn cat is going to want a cut of the production money for your shave shots now.

Great read, shave, and picture Rich!
Just a plus that Safety Cat approves of the TSC Brush!

DE Shave Straight Shave #306
Razor: Gillette Slim T-1 / Gillette Rubie (2)
Soap: WPS Gaelic Tweed
Scuttle: Crown King 12oz.
Strop: Mitchel Mogal #824 Horsehide
Brush: Omega Boar
AS/EdT: Rich's Bootleg Bay Rum DFET
Sound track: None

The Stuff:
All proven elements with todays shave, save the Rubie which was pretty good in it's first outing. It is my hope it loses it's slight harshness like Feathers and Voskhods do. The Gillette is resplendent in it's UK, or Dallas, or Seattle colors. WSP T Formula is just a great performer and today we are going with cool water.

The Shave: Holy Guacamole it got hot warm quick here in Central Ohio. It's hot sure, but it's a humid, miserable heat. I'm going with cool water today after going out trying to get my lawn tractor back on line. I've not been cutting grass at all yet this year. Started fine (in proper John Deere fashion) but when I went to engage the deck, KA-Thwack a whack a whack. The deck belt decided it's time to fail. I don't blame it, it's been a couple years since it's been spun. Just too hot to work on it so I need to cool down. Even with the wet towel to start with. I proto-lather my entire face and remove my hearing aids. I am cooling down quick. As expected, the Rubie blades, after a bit of palm stropping are smooth as.... Rubies... Around my part of Ohio there was a great De-militarized zone. We have a great huge exposed Flint vein that the various tribes all decided not to attack one another around here. They probably even used Flint to shave with. I know Surgeons used obsidian to flake off and use for scalpels. Well, my brothers, that's what Rubie's kind of feel like on it's second shave. Set on 6, the Slim and the residual slick of the Tweed allow me to go stubble hunting to get me to my first unmitigated grail of the season. I wonder if the cold water had anything to do with it? Certainly going stubble hunting did.

Comments: Took the Miata for a nice long trip and remember now why I love this car so much (aside from the A/C working) Ton's more smiles per gallon than the Classic feel of the Benz. Two different schools of Cool. BUT. Believe it or not, the Benz gets better gas mileage than the Miata! Just like my liking of vintage Gillettes and Blades, I get the thrills and excitement from the Long Blades, but sometimes just a smooth easy BBS that takes next to no brain power to achieve is really nice. Meanwhile, When it cools down tonight, I'll drop the Deck on the Deere and prepare for a new belt. Maybe I'll even inspect the other belts! Now there is an idea!

Respectfully Submitted,
Rich

Way back in the last century, I got a pistol that fired 9X22 IMI's. It was quite a sweet maker of holes in paper. Through some kind of malfunction of the brain, I ordered a dry-fire training system that your could train a camera to show your point of aim just at the moment of pulling the trigger. There's an application and system for these little cartridges now that you can download. If anyone wants it, PM me your address. It still works but I aint got no use anymore. mostly a european or middle eastern caliber. Although Glock chambers one model for it.

Yes, on hot days, the lawn tractor makes yard work much easier. Hope the belts replace easily.

Formula T is always a great soap. I love that scent too. That's an awesome looking Slim.

Great shave! Looking forward to a Proraso Green shave here and there this summer, once this darned, self-imposed 3017 TOBS thing is over!

Good luck with the Deere!

Awesome stuff Rich, though sorry to hear about the drive belt for the mower deck. You're giving me a hankering to break out my similarly colored FB for a shave soon...though I'm enjoying the long blades for the time being.

Great read, shave, and picture Rich!

Bummer about the mower! Knock on wood, I haven't had any lawn equipment issues this year. Hope the belt is easily changed! I remember on some of Dad's older riding mowers, just getting the deck off was 3/4's of the job. The newer ones were much much easier.

Sorry I've been a bit sparse in posting the last couple of weeks guys. PT leaves me with noodle fingers. Left hand trying to fix a badly healed cut. Apparently the scar goes from the skin all the way to the bone. Or so it feels like it when I hit the goo. Right hand has trigger fingers that get stuck and drag across the keys and make mistakes like crazy. I am reading, but skipped PT today so I can type and prove I am indeed alive!
