Rich's Journal: Adventures with Life and Sharp things

It's ok, the cadre has a lot larger percentage of straight razor shavers than anywhere on earth. You're still in the cool kids club using a DE.

Great shave. Hard to argue with those results. Hope your hand keeps recovering well.

No shave today. A good mail-call from Japan. A Dorko 172 that has a crack in one of the scales that may necessitate disassembly and reinforcement. Unless the pretty bits can be transplanted. In any case, this may be a job I think I may need to farm out. It is my hope this blade is very similar to my Henckell Friudor, being as they are both stainless (INOX)

I must have done real good with my homework! They said I have graduated to new ones with putty and a different kind of brace. The downside is these exercises are exquisitely uncomfortable. We are training new muscles and tendons to do what the ones I cut did. It's going to take a few more days before I can just watch TV and idly do these exercises. SWMBO accuses me of whimpering.

Great acquisition of the Doro, Rich! Great news that you're making progress on the PT front too!

DE Shave Straight Shave #305
Razor: Gillette Flair Tip F-2 /Gillette Black (7ish)
Soap: Arko
Scuttle: Crown King 12oz.
Strop: Mitchel Mogal #824 Horsehide
Brush: Razorock 400
AS/EdT: Rich's Bootleg Bay Rum DFET
Sound track: Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass "Bittersweet Samba"

The Stuff: Another Mild razor for a bad paw day. I'm going to give myself a little more time before starting with long blades again. The Exercises leave my hands trembling and that's not a good thing. This Flare tip is a very mild baby custom made for my current situation. Arko is easy stuff and it really likes the 400 clone. You guys that don't have one yet really should give at least a look see. A Bargain for this thing! SafetyCat is settled in very comfortably in his post, pic to follow

The Shave: How can I go wrong with this combination? Well, pushing the blade for more shaves than I should would be one way. At least that was the one I chose to raise a few weepers on this shave. I have lots of these blades and more that enough to last for a while. The Black Ninja made a very good impression with this run over several razors. Three passes with some weepers, I'll call it a DFS- I was really smooth, but bleeding a bit for the effort. Bin the old black and look for the next blade to try. I'm DE'ing for a couple of weeks.

Comments: The new exercises are pretty demanding and require a lot of concentration to keep my form on. I am determined to get back to playing as soon as practical. I've not even entered the music room since all this started. SafetyCat was so mellowed out in his spot I got a special shot that he doesn't generally sit still for.

Just getting caught up Rich. The Memorial Day shave was a great tribute and read. I wonder if the PC police are trying to change history with the UN symbol? Especially with the current geopolitical circumstances on the Korean peninsula?

Just this morning I was thinking about how much WWII influenced my generation. Our fathers fought in WWII, Bob the milk man was a bit crazy as he was about two years in a Japanese POW camp, etc., etc. Almost every grownup I knew was either a WWII or a Korean war veteran, end the ones who weren't, we usually knew the reason why they weren't (medical, essential job, etc.). Of course the war of my youth was Viet Nam, and to this day I still have not gotten my mind around that one. I am still amazed at how far the patriotism pendulum can swing from a grateful nation having won WWII to spitting on returning veterans calling them baby killers over the course of a couple of decades.

I must say that returning veterans of recent conflicts have been far more welcomed and appreciated by the public than those returning in the late 60s and early 70s. And this gives me hope!

Oh and Rich, keep with the PT and keep with the Ovation when the PT is over. I have been a student of the guitar off and on over the past more than a decade, and I just have not been able to devote enough time and practice to get beyond a particular point in my skill level. Not sure if it is a lack of form in my practice (perfect practice makes perfect), or if I just get too discouraged and allow other life matters to push practice aside when it is time to double down in order to go beyond what appears to be my plateau. I picked up my acoustic guitar over the weekend, and went back to the beginning to bring my skill set forward. I'm going to take another stab at it, and hopefully, I will gain enjoyment and progress through the plateau that has been my breaking point in the past.

Love the shaves and had a lot of catching up to do. Hope the PT is going well. Impressive that the cat cooperates with you when putting your shave items on it. My dogs would throw a fit and stuff would be all over the floor if I tried it.

  • DE Shave Straight Shave #305
Razor: Gillette Fat Boy f-4 b Gillette Rubie (1)
    Soap: MVM parfait
    Scuttle: Crown King 12oz.
    Strop: Mitchel Mogal #824 Horsehide
    Brush: Sterling badger
    AS/EdT: Clubman Whiskey Woods
    Sound track: None

    The Stuff:
As I work my way through my DE’s naturally the birthday razor will show up. And a new to me blade to try. These appear to be Russian made, as opposed to the Indian made Blacks I just used. Just trying out the Whiskey Woods today too. Walt’s soaps are legendary in my book and the mix of the three proto’s yields a truly marvelous soap that the cats all love.

The Shave: How can I go wrong with this combination? It appears I cannot. The blade really reminds me of fresh a fresh Smooth, but a touch of tooth if I should press my luck. We are sizing each other up.. by the end of three passes, I pull the trigger on pass 4. In the end I’m as smooth as any dolphin I’ve ever seen. Subsequent shaves will determine how closely the Rubies are to Voskhod.

Comments: Got the Miata back! It turns out a combination of bad grounds and a gtitchy ignition pack were causing me no end of grief. It runs strong now. SWMBO now demands I divest either the Miata or the Merc. Both are very satisfying cars for different reasons and selling either will result in sellers remorse like when I sold my 68 Camaro.
