Quijote's search for BBS

No need to buy another strop, Don. I didn't realize you had only the one - PM me your mailing address and I'll glady send you a PIF strop to get you back up and running.

Absolutely Fantastic Chris!!!!!! This is why TSC is the best forum on earth

It has been around a month since I picked up a straight razor, but I did so today. Straight Shave #66

Ed Wustolf Tridente
Sorrentino TSC Legacy

CL Colonia Balsamica AS

Well, I received the strop on Monday, but my old Poor Man's just had a leather loop that I could wrap around the towel bar in the bathroom. This one has more traditional mounting hardware and wouldn't fit the same, so I had to find some way of mounting it. I found a temporary solution and just grabbed a carabiner that would fit over the bar. When I first got the Tridente, it was a HHT1, so while shave ready, it was not as sharp as some of the others I have used. I took it to the balsa strop, then to the fabric component of this strop (I think firehose), and then to the leather. I did not test the new HHT rating, but it felt great on the face. It cut through everything with ease. After 2 passes, 90% of me was BBS, with just a little DFS territory on my neck. I didn't bother trying a 3rd pass as I felt a little rusty and let my pressure get away from me on one spot that resulted in a few pin prick sized weepers that sealed up with cold water. THe soap, AS, and brush are proven performers in my den. There is not much I can say about them that I haven't already. I love them.

Thoughts on the new stuff. First of all, the strop. It is a black latigo strop that has a secondary fabric component. It is amazing. The strop I started with was such a thick leather that it hardly moved this one is very flexible. The draw on it is lighter than I am used to, but that is not a bad thing, just something that is a difference. The surface also feels much smoother. I think it will lead to better edges on my straights.

Now the Tridente. Yes please. This is an amazing razor. It was my first time using it and it is already having a staring contest at the Waterville. I do not know which is better, but they are both great razors. I am finding that I really like the 6/8 size as it has a little more heft than my other 2 razors that I have tried (both 5/8). The steel on this razor also feels very good. I will have to try these 2 side by side at some point.

A la Mancha, I did something stupid last night. Our garbage disposal has been not wanting to start recently. It feels like it doesn't have to torque to start moving. I have used an allen wrench before to manually spin it to break up the food that got dumped in there so that it wouldn't back up. Well, yesterday, the kids dumped almost full bowls of cereal in there and it was really clogged up. I figured that rather than sit there and manually spin it for a long time, I will just use the allen wrench to jump start it with it trying to spin. Well, it worked. However, the allen wrench (one of those folding ones with the multiple sizes that fold in together) didn't just fall out, it got stuck in there. Well, my hands were still right there and it took a layer of skin off my palm near the wrist. On the plus side, it didn't fly loose and break any of the vases or glass jars we have under there.

I hate garbage disposals. It took awhile to convince my wife that we should force EVERYTHING down it. Thankfully if/when it goes bad they are pretty easy to replace.

at least you didn't lose any fingers or worse! Be careful my friend!
I know to keep my fingers away from the business end. I always shut the breaker off whenever I go in that way.

They are indeed. Although mine is hardwired in, so there is one extra step, but not bad. I just have to convince her to buy another.

Dang it Don, careful! But pretty nice about the strop and the straights.

Glad to hear the new strop and razor are working well for you Don!! Also, very happy to hear that you still have all of your digits. We already have too many around here that are missing one or more...lol

The new strop sounds great. Very nice shave also.

But, good God man! Be careful around things like garbage disposals.

Great shave Don. Congratulations on the strop!

I’ve been slowly trying to train the family to be very selective about what goes in the garbage disposal, so I don’t have to deal with these very same things. It’s a tough battle.

Great read and shave Don!

The strop and Trident sound like winners!

Geeezus Man Be careful! Fast spinning equipment or slow for that matter, even those not designed to chew up stuff, can turn an ordinary item into a very dangerous missile or battering ram thingy.

OK people, I have been absent from here for a long time. I apologize for that. I have been really busy. Work and life are nuts. So I am popping in here for a quick update.

Shaving update:
I have mainly been using 3 razors. Shovelhead, German 37, and injector. I tried a BIC blade in the 37, but they didn't get along. I will try it with the tech at a later time. I have only used straights a couple of times. I have also been using the same soap for about 2 weeks now. I made the mistake of smearing a sample into the bottom of my bowl. It just keeps going and going.

Life update:
I have been spending quite a bit of time lately refining some woodworking skills. It will come in handy for a side project here I have been planning for a little while. As noted by Chad in another thread my son is sick right now. I didn't find out until going to pick up his medicine that our insurance dropped him. I am dealing with that right now. I filled an appeal to at least get some temporary coverage on him. Arabella is doing great. I am applying for a new position at work. I am applying to be a field adjuster rather than an office adjuster. It would mean significantly more money, more hours, and a company car. Tammy is having a hard time with the booster club. She is the treasurer. She and the president are butting heads a lot. She already planned to tell them that this is going to be her last year. This just cemented it. That is a brief synopsis of what has been going on around here. Hope you all are doing well.

A lot going on Don...really sorry to hear your son isn't well. My wife and I will say a prayer for him and I am sure all will be well. That sucks to hear about your insurance...keep on them. I'm sure it won't be easy but remember squeaky wheel gets the oil. Don't say no for an answer and keep at it.

Take care of your family...they are way more important than any of us. We'll be here when all is well. Keep your head up and you will persevere!

Sorry to hear about your life stresses Don. I hope things clear up soon for you and the family!

Sounds like life is very exciting at the moment, you appear to have some great things in the work. I look forward to hearing more about your wood working.

Great to hear from you Don, sounds like life has been piling it on you lately. Don't worry about having to come on here, we'll be ready and waiting when life finds someone else to annoy. Hope your son starts feeling better soon, and as said earlier, stay on the insurance company and don't take no for an answer. Prayers going out...
