It's an unfortunate fact of my ignorance that I had no familiarity with the phenomenon and attendant traditions of the Challenge coin.

I must say that my receipt of this lovely medallion has brought about a lot of reading. Histories vary.

My primary concern is that I be prepared when it comes time to bring mine out, so as not to screw up a ritual. Is there a default or custom set of coin traditions with which I should familiarize myself?

This really is striking. Every element is meaningful.

It's a very cool thing you guys did.

The main idea is that you carry it with you always (or any time you have the chance of meeting a TSC member). You have the privilege of asking to see people’s coin at any time (usually in a bar-type setting). If everyone has it, you buy a round of drinks. If someone doesn’t have theirs, they buy the round.

I think that’s the basic idea.

Interestingly, to me at least, is that during my active duty time in the Navy (1976-82), I never knew of this tradition. Either it had fallen out of favor, or the carrier I was on simply did not do this. I think it had simply been forgotten. Had the ship offered a challenge coin, I would have carried one, if only to avoid buying drinks if challenged.

Ok, I'm all read up. Balancing the probability of encountering a challenge here in Gallatin, TN against loss or damage, I think I'll keep it safe until it might be needed. I will, for example, have it when I can get to a convention, and it will be accompanying me someday to Tuscon for my bucket list Barber shave.

It's the coolest Cadre item I've got. The keychain, shirts and coffee mugs are awesome, but this is a special piece.

Today's shave:

Razor: Paradigm Diamondback
Blade: Personna Platinum Israeli Red
Brush: Simpson Keyhole KH2
Pre-Shave: Cella Pre-shave gel
Lather: Pannacrema Nuavia Verde
Aftershave: Floid Black
Additional Care:
Humphreys Maravilla
Osma Tradition Alum Block

I never considered it before today, but I don't believe I own a brush that's no longer made. I don't own a custom, in the sense of the word that doesn't include the Shavemac I specified using their "somewhat bewildering to use on a phone" web interface. Every brush I own is currently in production.

The only reason I even wondered was that the demise of Pannacrema inspired me to see what I could line up as far as discontinued products.

Only the brush and the pre-shave gel, which I find very useful for my purposes, are still made.

I derive nothing profound from this shave, except that I'll miss these products when they're done. I take some comfort in knowing that with proper care, the razor should work perfectly for at least 1000 years.

I like the feel of this brush. I like the razor. The soap and splash, well, they're fantastic. Lime and a cooling agent, in the right amounts! The soap is superb.

I could go on, but basically, this shave flowed over with pleasant scents and sensations. Sorely needed!

A lot going on today. Not in the real world, that's groceries and errands. Today's shave had a lot going on. It was a mixed bag. Such is life.

Probably everyone has an opinion of the Feather Hi Stainless DE blade. They're one of the items you hear about as a new wetshaver, and approach cautiously. And they did extract a price from my neophyte face. But ultimately, I just found them rough and uncomfortable.

The last time I used one before today was in my AS-D2, as a last resort to get the thing to shave me close. It didn't work, so I sold the razor.

Well, since then, I've collected these modern razors.

And my long-term wisdom was overwhelmed by the impulse to try out a Feather in one of the new razors. So tonight it was a Feather in the Wolfman.

It will be a one shave experiment. I got a clear result. My face does not like that blade. I almost felt pity from the alum block, as it detailed the irritation.

The saving grace of the shave was the Zingari Man Recovery Splash. It is a very soothing, light, and comforting product. I'm sold.

I'm really becoming a Zingari Man fan boy. Both bases are wonderful, and I'm impressed with her as someone who wants a signature aspect of her products to be that they are gentle. I trust her to not screw around with fragrance oils in a way that I do not trust A&E. Too many people report getting burned by their soaps. They haven't burned me, but I'm wary of soaps where the scent level is 11.

Zingari soaps are scented, more than lightly, but not in a way that lingers. I'm loathe to assign a scent strength. 90% of the time, people say the scent strength is 5, which tells me nothing, or even worse, 5.5. I don't think I could discern 10 different scent strengths, much less 20!

So I'll just say the scent strength is moderate. 5 isn't wrong.

So I think I've come to the conclusion of the Feather Hi Stainless era in my den. I see no point in using one again.

The Recovery Splash may require getting an unscented bottle, to use with other soaps. I'm really impressed with this stuff, and I'm an alcohol splash junkie.

So there was a lot going on tonight.

Today's shave July 12, 2023

Razor: Rex Supply Envoy Deluxe Gold Plated
Blade: Personna Platinum Israeli Red
Brush: Simpson Chubby 3 Manchurian (Faux Sapphire)
Lather: Saponificio Varesino Dolomiti
Aftershave: Saponificio Varesino Dolomiti
Additional Care:
Osma Tradition Alum Block

I prefer the Envoy to the Blackbird. I find them very similar, but the level of aggression in the Envoy is a little lower, and I prefer the Envoy handle to any other razor handle I've used.

Dolomiti is a great soap with a scent that my brain doesn't seem to recognize in any detail whatsoever. I'm not even sure I would call it a scent, except that the aftershave clarifies things.

Today's shave, July 15, 2023

Razor: Edwin Jagger 3ONE6
Blade: Gillette Silver Blue
Brush: Simpson A1 Astor Best Badger
Lather: Floris No. 89
Aftershave: Floris No. 89
Additional Care:
Lucky Tiger Aftershave and Face Tonic
Osma Tradition Alum Block

I imagined an LSAT question that began, "Two Daves and Ian Fleming are taking turns shaving in a Disney Cruise Spa Bathroom, daily, for a week. In what order, over the seven days, should they shave to maximize single blocks of the bathroom smelling like Floris #89?"

There were actual questions just like this on that infernal test. What they had to do with being a likely success at law school is still a mystery to me. Halfway through the exam, the girl next to me stopped, calmly pushed back her chair, stood up, shouted, "No! No!" and walked out. Unfortunately for me, I didn't see what she saw until after I'd finished school and signed all the student loan documents.

Anyway, Floris #89 is a scent, one of a short list, that I love so much I use the bath gel, shave soap, aftershave and EdT. PAA Atomic Age Bay Rum is another. There's no Cool Water shave soap, alas. Nor is there one for Caswell-Massey No. 6. Those would be nice.

The 3ONE6 is terrific. The Astor is terrific.

The Zeus barber towel is terrific. I'm getting another batch of 6.

Have a great day everyone.

Wow, that's dramatic. My nursing boards offered no such entertainment. Though some people would get so worked up over them that doctors would prescribe beta blockers to keep their heart rates under control.

Wow! I remember being anxious, but I stuck it out!
