Let's All 3017... 2020 CBL Tonsorial Edition!

Today I used the SIR Fougere again!....... this time I followed up with Aqua Velva Original Sport (The Green Stuff) It smells very close to the Sir Irisch Moos AS, but slightly less strong, and slightly sweeter. It's a really good match!

I understand what 3017ing a soap is, but where did that come from? Just curious.
Don Had it mostly right. Again, happened on another Forum, and by another person. Back in 2010, the gent took a hard look at his stock and estimated that he had enough soap to last him 7 years, at his current rate of consumption. He therefore exclaimed in a thread that he had enough to last until 2017..... and he vowed to use each soap one at a time, until they were done, before moving onto the next, and vowed to not buy another soap, until all were gone. This was a very long thread with lots of updates. Somewhere along the line a Mod changed the title of the thread to 3017, and now that is what everyone talks about when they refer to using one soap unitl it is gone before using another product. The jargon has even landed itself into the Urban Dictionary.

(Personally, I think the Cadre shold come up with our own name for this.......)

I remember when this came up in 2010. While I like the idea of renaming it, I think it better to leave it the same as it is widely known at this point.

To 3017 soap means to finish the soap to completion. Over at another forum, a person (not sure exactly at this moment who said it) said that he had enough shaving soap to last until 3017 and doesn't need to purchase any more. This became known to finish a soap to completion. I am sure I am missing some kind of detail...but I am sure one of the Cadre Members will be around soon enough to correct what I have wrong.
Thank you for the explanation. Having enough soap for a thousand years is quite a den.

That makes more sense, 7 years worth of soap vs over a thousand years worth of soap. Thanks for your detailed history lesson on shaving slang terms. I agree that The Cadre needs our own term.

  • Pre-shave: Warm shower and coconut and coffee scrub
  • Razor: Rockwell 6S, R6
  • Blade: The Wizamet from the Rockwell and 37
  • Brush: Klenzo
  • Soap: CBL Tonsorial Balsamic Oud
  • Aftershave: Thayer's Original, Talbot Shaving Cole's Pond
  • Frag: None
  • Music: ¡MAYDAY! x MURS
Day 2 of 3017...or solesoaping??? Personally I'm fine with the 3017 moniker, I know there's a lot of bad blood right now, but I think the story is funny and in the spirit of this hobby. I'm really big on hyperbole and I'm certain that I have enough soap to last until 3017; just a millenium to go! Anyways. Today's shave went better and worse, but it was user error. I'm enjoying this so far.

Love that brush handle.

I don't like 3017 just because it doesn't really mean anything.

Fair enough. In that case, I think it's a decent placeholder until one of us says something ridiculous about drowning in soap or something that sticks with everybody. 🤣

I like the term solesoaping, sounds so @HMan so today. Solesoaping does a lot more to describe the act of committing to one soap than 3017, even when you understand the story behind 3017. Then again, strictly speaking neither of them are saying ANYTHING...both are gibberish. We accept YMMV (or for you Cole YKMV) without question even though Shaving and mileage have nothing to do with each other.

But as crazy and abstract as 3017 is and regardless of the forum of which it originated (one of the larger of its kind at the time) the term has become part of the wet shaving sub culture. So many acronyms are used without thought of who or how they began, this one has an origin story (is it a hero or villain?) and we should embrace that. We could clean it up a bit for use on the Shaving Cadre by describing originating person as a member of one of the early Shaving forums ....

Key take away...conversations on forums have power. What you say/do MIGHT end up in the urban dictionary! (And it doesn’t even have to make sense...OR be your words)

What he said. I may not think it perfectly describes what we're doing but the Shaving community at large gets it. To change it based on where it originated seems spiteful , small and ungentlemanly. That's my feelings. Let's be bigger and move on with life and shaving.

While I'm not participating in this. I'm really enjoying reading about it.

Not sure if I have it in me to 3017 a full puck or even a shave stick.

My best so far was a month of the same soap.

So I decided the 3.6 ounces wasn't registering a change after a shave and maybe I should change to grams. 1st picture is before shave 4 and 2nd picture is after shave 4. Still no change in weight which makes me wonder if it is growing.........

Does anyone have a guess about how long?
Not sure if you can trust these guesses on page 4 but here ya go
