A little follow up.... about an hour after that first shave, I felt my face, and it was sooooo smooth. Probably one of the closest best shaves I've had in a long time. As you can see, I changed the setting a few times that first shave, trying to dial it in. Bu the end it seemed like Setting 2 was where it was at for me. So the next shave I did entirely on setting 2...... and I kinda felt it was just a touch too aggressive. So today I set it on 1.5..... the feel during the shave was amazing. Very mild, like razors I'm used to using. It was the perfect feel during the shave. However, the shave was not as close as I'd like.

I have a bit more experimenting to do. Going to try it on 3 for the next shave, but I doubt I can go past that. I may try one pass, just to see. But the jury is still out.

Hi @Sypder

Just one suggestion and it may be a mute point but when centering the blade I know I have to use a magnifier to make sure the blade is absolutely centered and it’s not that I’m blind. Lol

I know everyone’s face/beard is different but I’ve used the Gibbs for a few years now and it’s a very efficient razor and smooth all the way up to max setting BUT I will say if the blade is even a little off center it becomes what I’d call harsh against the face or aggressive. In fact my favorite setting on my Gibbs is #5 and the one I use 90% of the time and it’s still very smooth.
So just some thoughts. I’m sending Dave mine today so it will be interesting to see how it works for him.

I’m also curious about this modern Gibbs if the performance is like the original but is more reasonably priced than the Taiga.

Great shaves!!

Frank

Thanks @Dragonsbeard I'll take a look, but I made sure it was good and centered before the shave. But I guess, it could be close to my eye and still be a bit off.

Exactly! That’s the one PITA thing about a Gibbs is the time it takes to not only modify the blade but make sure it’s in spot on centered.

I got my Gibbs back today! After using a Charcoal Goods Lvl 2 on loan from a friend, I was feeling a bit bummed because of the great shaves it was giving me. Thankfully, for me, the Gibbs is just as good based on this AM's shave.

My specimen is a bit funky in that it doesn't go down to 1, it's bottom setting it 2, and I've been using it on N.

All I can say is I got a very close comfortable shave today, and I've been struggling to do that lately.

The shaving angle on this is very interesting, I tend to start by riding the cap. But end by having equal contact between guard and cap. The wedge shape of the guard makes the way this feels very unique, and I think it's part of what makes the Gibbs so special when you find it.

This Gibbs is ever confusing...... Today I set it back to "N" or setting 3. Had an amazing shave! Did not notice the blade feel issues that I did on my first shave with setting. After 3 passes +touchup, I had an amazingly smooth shave. One of the best!

That's how I'm feeling today too, just really glad this thread pushed me into getting my baby back.

When the angle is right the blade feel goes away.

Just curious KJ if you played with centering the blade or just zeroed in the angle of the shave better?

I do not loosen mine before I adjust it. Mine adjust with out loosening. The Gibbs is a near perfect razor for me, I normally use it at 5 or 4 1/2. I love it.
Happy shaves

The one I'm using I could not get it to move more than like 1 position without loosening it. @DeepSea is that your experience as well?

Yep. I slightly loosen the cap and then while the handle a bit(that one kind of get lodged into the adjuster nut a bit) and then adjust the setting. I don’t usually have to loosen it so much that the blade shifts around though.
I’m happy to hear you are having smoother shaves with the Gibbs! I find my happy place with it is setting 2-4 depending on growth.

Have you tried flipping the adjuster but over? I had the same issue and it turned out the nut was on upside down.

Thanks for the suggestion, that’s not it. I’ve tried everything I can think of since it makes me a little crazy.

That would definitely drive me nuts. The issue with mine is the spring likes to get stuck from time to time. I’d love to find a replacement for it but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

I know I've seen a link to a replacement spring out there, but that was a while back, I could try to dig it up if you want.

I used the Gibbs again today, I'm going to call it, this is the best razor in my den. For me it's even outshining the Charcoal Goods I have on loan. It's just as close a shave, but less tendency to irritate. There is blade feel, but it doesn't feel like it's going to bite making it a very easy, comfortable shaver.

I'm no razor engineer, but I can't help but wonder why it shaves so darn well? Looking at the way the blade is held in, I'd never guess it would be anything other than a hard horrible shave, but it's the opposite. It seems to break all the rules of what makes a razor smooth. Yet I can easily go ATG on my chin and upper lip, which is the gold standard of smoothness for me.

Well, in order to adjust it, you need to loosen it up, so you need to realign the blade every time you adjust it.
You can just pinch the top cap and bottom plate together while you loosen the bottom.

No doubt though, this may be the world's most fiddly razor.

Used the Gibbs on a 4 today. Definitely some blade feel..... but oddly, did not feel aggressive. Usually, for me, the two go hand in hand. I did get a nice, smooth shave. Again results were stellar, pretty close to setting 3 for me. Maybe not quite as close, but still great BBS. When I applied AS, though..... wow, the sting! The blade feel I was feeling really did something to my face. I may try one more setting, but I doubt I can do the whole shave on a 5. But somewhere between a 2 and a 3.5 is probably perfect. And yes this is an awesome razor. May be one of the best I've tried. Probably better than my beloved Fatboy. After using it a while, the handle does seem a little on the short side, but not by much.
