Herritage Collections Gibbs Clone

Efficiency is not based on the end result but how many passes it takes an individual to get there with different razors. For me, as an example, I can get a BBS from a Charcoal Goods level 1 or 3. The level 1 requires 3 full passes plus touchup where as the level 3 takes 2 passes. Definition of efficiency the state or quality of being efficient, or able to accomplish something with the least waste of time and effort;

Yes, and a more aggressive razor cuts closer therefore requiring less passes. This isn't exactly quantum physics.

I don’t get taking a hard line on discussions like efficiency. I recon one’s facial hair coarseness and growth pattern come into play here. I know as I get older what I feel as efficiency matters more and more. All I can say is I do find some razors more efficient than others while feeling smooth and others less so while feeling they are rough or more likely to bite. My personal measure is how many passes I need to get the hard to shave areas under my jawline.

I’ve used the Gibbs for quite a while now and extensively in many Shave Offs with other razors and it’s smooth from setting 1 all the way up to max setting so if this razor can shave like an authentic Gibbs then it definitely has my attention. From what I understand the materials are nickel over brass with chrome plating which is exactly like the Gibbs 16. I also have the brass handle replacement which adds some weight to the handle so it’s not so head heavy. Also have the longer extension brass handle but prefer the standard length as it’s more maneuverable which is also one of the things I love about the Gibbs. If the price is really $100 and it’s made from quality materials then this will be a winner for sure!

I've always been curious about the Gibbs so I'm watching this clone with excitement

Dave if you want to try mine I’d be more than glad to send it to you. I think we are both on the pass around for the Taiga prototype and I’d like to see how it compares to the original also. This one looks like the better priced copy though and even looks more like the original Gibbs

I was just going to ask where you got those. How do you like how it affects the weight and balance?

The weight and balance for me is very good. With the stock handle it is a head heavy razor which on the Gibbs I don't mind at all since it has great maneuverability. So with that said with the short brass replacement handle I got from Claudio it becomes not so head heavy but doesn't really effect the maneuverability like the longer extension handle did. Obviously everyone's got different preferences. Claudio has a store on Etsy and I hope I'm allowed to say that on here. He's a great guy to do business with also. Just takes a while since it's a long ship from S Africa.

Here's a link to his new design.

Thanks, that just what I was wondering about, the head heaviness of the razor strangely works for me as well, but I wouldn't mind a little improvement there. I'll take a look at Claudio's page.

Thanks to @DeepSea i got to try the Gibbs. Here’s shave #1.

Nice video @Spider. I apologize for not giving you much info on the razor, just been super busy on the home front even though I’ve had extremely minimal days at work over past couple weeks. I think I need a vacation from my vacation.

The handle is a 3D printed replacement that came with the razor when I purchased it. The original had cracked, which is quite common with the original handles.

A little follow up.... about an hour after that first shave, I felt my face, and it was sooooo smooth. Probably one of the closest best shaves I've had in a long time. As you can see, I changed the setting a few times that first shave, trying to dial it in. Bu the end it seemed like Setting 2 was where it was at for me. So the next shave I did entirely on setting 2...... and I kinda felt it was just a touch too aggressive. So today I set it on 1.5..... the feel during the shave was amazing. Very mild, like razors I'm used to using. It was the perfect feel during the shave. However, the shave was not as close as I'd like.

I have a bit more experimenting to do. Going to try it on 3 for the next shave, but I doubt I can go past that. I may try one pass, just to see. But the jury is still out.

Sounds like the best end result you got was when you were playing with the settings in the first shave for different passes. I guess that's why they make an adjustable, convenience for the same shave. Nice job

Yeah, but I'd never do that during a shave. I refuse to adjust a razor mid shave in order to get a good shave. I need to have a perfect setting, or a few settings I enjoy, so I can "set it and forget it" ala Ron Popeil.
