For the Love of Old Spice - Illini's Shave Journal

Thank you everyone! I'm very excited for the role. Unfortunately there wasn't any budge on comp, which while frustrating tends to be the unfortunate reality with internal moves. Naturally going to be dual-hatting through the transition of my old role into the new but can't wait for a shift in focus and an expansion in role responsibilities.

Used Never Alone for today's shave, and it's a wonderful barbershop scent. Don't have any other A&E soaps to judge against or have established a baseline from, but performance was great. Chased with Classic Match Blue EdT which is going quick. More than half the bottle is already gone, probably because longevity isn't the best and since I sit in my office alone all day long, I tend to re-spray throughout the day. Guess it's another great benefit from the return to fulltime WFH!

Bummer there wasn’t any comp budge. I had the same issue with my job switch and it was a little frustrating. Thankfully the intangible benefits (self-improvement and experience mainly) we’re still enough to warrant me accepting.
Sounds exactly the same to my situation. In speaking with friends across various companies (all of us are in our 30s and around the same point in terms of marriage, kids, houses, etc.) it really is a common complaint. I've seen articles about the current working generation's "lack of loyalty" when it comes to company hopping, but when you can go and chase 10-15% bumps in comp by changing companies as opposed to 2-5% internally, companies are really just setting themselves up for the issue. If more companies outside of the government sector still offered defined benefit plans, that'd be a different issue too. But with those two things coupled together, it pays to move around!

I'm interested to see studies down the road on how the financial crisis of '07/'08 affected the mindset of those who were about to or whom recently joined the workforce around that time. I saw friends and family members lose jobs, savings, retirements, etc. and it those memories that are always there in the back of my mind when it comes to feeling like you might be forgoing current earning potentials for a future that might not exist as you see it today.

We made it fam - it's finally Friday. Got a lot on the docket again this coming weekend so it's going to be busy but hopefully productive as well. Was feeling a bit of a barbershop shave this morning, so did the combo of MWF & TOBS Mr. Taylor, chased with Clubman and MJ cologne. Lovely shave to set up what is hopefully a lovely weekend!

Hard to believe it's Monday, but here we are!

Weekend was exhausting but extremely productive. So much so that I didn't shave. I can't remember the last time I mowed down 3 days of growth like I did this morning! In any case, Saturday was dad & son day as my wife has been itching to paint our playroom and laundry room for months. So she did that while I took on kid duty from sun up to sun down. Days like that really give me a renewed level of appreciation for her staying home and raising him full time, as just one day of it wipes me out. She does it all day, ever day. I'm a lucky man.

Sunday we took down a 35' evergreen tree that someone stupidly planted directly in the middle of our backyard at some point in the past. Talk about a stupid place for a tree like that. My wife has been wanting us to take it down since the day we moved in. Thankfully her aunt and uncle live about 45 minutes away on 45 acres so they agreed to help me haul the branches and trunk away to their land to burn. Took 3 of us a little less than an hour to fall the tree and get it loaded up on the trailer. Not bad at all. Drove out to their property and 15 minutes later 35' of evergreen was in a pile to dry then burn. Not bad for a morning's work.

It finally looks like the heat has gone and we'll settle into cooler weather, so woke up and got out to a local sod farm at 7am to get 150sqft of sod. By 8:30am I had cut and laid it all around various sides of our house to help re-define flower beds that have been long neglected. It poured for about 30 minutes of the work but I had already rototilled and thrown down starter fertilizer in all the places I was laying the sod on Saturday so the rain was welcomed to help offset my water bill. I was soaked and muddy but happy to have it all down and the beds look much better now. Late start at work this morning after a shower and shave but well worth working a bit later to get the sod down before the next couple days of cool wet weather to really jump start its establishment.

Ha! For the past month or so, it feels like every Wednesday-ish, my wife brings out another honey-do list that is longer than the previous weekend's! Doesn't she know it's football season???

Nice job … well except for the lack of shaves … but nice job!
While I enjoy the daily shave, there was something to be said for mowing down 3 days of growth with the NEW LC. Something about those multi-day stubble shaves that just hit a little different!

Chain saws and 🔥 awesome!
Yessir! I got a little Dewalt 20v last Black Friday for $99 which was a steal. It's a fantastic saw, don't have to worry about starting it up when it gets used once or twice a season and I threw a 14" bar on it so it can basically tackle anything on my suburban .25 acre. However, my wife's uncle brought his trusty Stihl from his work truck and it made quicker work of the 24" trunk. Told him he needs to have us over when he burns the pile because it's gonna look and smell nice!

When I get ready to sell my house, I'd like to hire you to do my front yard.
My neighbors must have looked outside at 8am in the pouring rain and said "this guy is crazy laying down sod right now!" I won't pretend I have the greenest thumb in the world but our landscaping is leaps and bounds ahead of where it was when we bought the house a few years ago.

Really starting to feel like autumn around here, which is extremely welcomed as it's my favorite season. Broke out the SW Autumn Ash for the first time this year and man does it get me in the mood for cool nights in sweatshirts drinking bourbon on the back porch. Chased with Old Spice and MJ Legend EdC. Another gift from a fellow shaver on Instagram since he really wasn't a fan, this MJ Legend is pretty amazing on my skin. Definitely picking up the sweet gourmand notes of coffee and vanilla, along with some sweet spice and maybe even some wood. Definitely a cooler weather fragrance. I now know why this one of all the MJ line gets the love from fragcomm!
