For the Love of Old Spice - Illini's Shave Journal

There’s a lot of that mishmash, same ‘ol-same ‘ol stuff going around with newer frags. Seems like you have to pay top dollar for something different and stand out or be willing to court some classics.
There is exactly a zero percent chance the wife would go for niche fragrance prices, even if I was willing to shell out that kind of money! [emoji23]

Good news is I'm perfectly content with a small collection consisting of YSL L'Homme as well as Nautica and Michael Jordan!

It’s back!!! Go Big 10 (of course the only team that counts is Penn St! We are!!

Big Bret's first game here at Illinois was a good one. Some scares here and there but a W is a W!

Nice weekend here for myself and the family. Spent some time at the pool Friday Saturday and Sunday as the season slowly comes to a close over Labor Day. Enjoyed week 0 of college football along with a W for my Illini. Cleaned up a bit and removed everything from many of our walls as we're having multiple areas painted later this week and next. Forced us to clean out one of the secondary bedrooms which had become a dumping ground for all the baby stuff now that our son is firmly in the toddler stage.

Really starting to feel the autumn mood settle in here too. College football returned, have some fantasy football drafts this week, pumpkin beers and coffee are everywhere, and the forecast finally has the heat wave broken. I love this time of year, although I'm going to try and kill my tub of Captain's Choice Nor'easter this week before really starting to rotate in some more autumnal scents. Skipped yesterday's shave but Saturday was a nice "throwback" theme between the PAA Sundown, Heritage Gibbs razor and Grey Flannel EdT. Going to work out and shower during lunch today so no shave yet this Monday.

Got particularly busy at work yesterday afternoon but did squeeze in my workout and shower/shave in 45 minutes during lunch. I'm estimating 3 or 4 shaves left of the CC Nor'easter so going to kill it this week. While I'm finishing it off, I'll cycle through the various samples of colognes I have laying around.

Today was Defy by Calvin Klein. This has been marketed to death both on social media as well as various streaming services we subscribe to. So much so that my wife knew the name when I told her what I was wearing. "Oh that's the one we keep seeing ads for!" It's a very nice blue scent, but nothing more. Sweet citrus opening that quickly dries down into a pleasant skin scent. I almost get a little coconut/sun tan lotion vibe but could be the amber advertised in the base. We'll see how longevity is, but based on what I've seen on Fragrantica, I'm not holding my breath. I'd pick this up at a big discounted price, but wouldn't pay anything near retail for it, especially when there are plenty of similar scents at a significantly lower price point.

Seems like most of the reviews online fall in line with your thoughts on Defy, maybe even less forgiving 😂

Having only been casually into fragrances for a very short while, it's become abundantly clear that "fragcom" will pretty much universally pan anything that comes out that is generically blue/green/citrus. I sort of get it from their POV, it's nothing new or special. But there's a reason the designers are doing it. The general buying public who is going to walk into a Macy's or Sephora is going to smell it, like it, and buy it at full retail. It isn't going to be something someone with 200+ bottles is going to want, and I don't think the designers care.

I get the whole "you should wear a scent for yourself" idea, but I also want my wife, friends, family, colleagues in the office, etc. to think I smell nice! Would I pick up something just to please other people? No, but in my POV, these "mass appealing" profiles are not inherently bad and I enjoy wearing them!

I agree with you whoLe heartedly. It always baffles me when a reviewer will state “This frag won’t challenge you…“ I mean the whole point is I don’t want to stink - and just because this niche frag has oil of Tasmanian Toad Stool - I don’t want the people around me to think I smell like a foot locket 😂

Okay, now that Defy has had a chance to dry down, I'm getting a ton of musk, to the point where it's almost coming across as BO-esque. And that's not good! That makes this one a very hard pass for me.

Happy Hump Day Cadre!

I was tapped to interview for a new role late last week and just got the invites for Tuesday morning. What a way to get back from the long weekend ahead! It's definitely an exciting role, thought, and one I think I'd both very much enjoy and would be a great move from a resume-building perspective. We'll see how it plays out!

Today's EdT sample is the infamous 1 Million EdT. This one is no joke in the projection / sillage department, that's for sure! I am typically a 3-5 spray guy but that seems to have been a little heavy on the trigger with this one. It's definitely the sweet spicy bomb that I've heard so much about. But I don't think I hate it. Opening was nice but now that it's had a little bit to settle down, it's vanilla and cinnamon all the way. I get it fragcomm, this is overworn and the flankers are supposedly better. But first impressions aren't bad at all. Quite the opposite. Don't think I'd buy a full size bottle but it's nice. We'll see how the base evolves over the afternoon.

Congrats on the new role Ryan!

PR 1 Million is meh for me…and some of there other iteration ms just feel too similar to it. One reviewer described it as something like a young frat/basic b/party boy would wear…and I can see that! 😂

Present company excluded of course 😜

Unfortunately nothing to celebrate quite yet, as I'm just in the interview phase, but cross your fingers for me Chris!

Thoughts on Old Spice: I have used a great deal of different toiletry products in my lifetime and although I don’t fish for compliments, I do enjoy them. Three products garner compliments consistently. DH Harris Sandalwood, Knize Ten, and Old Spice. And note that Old Spice was originally developed as a product to be marketed to woman. If you read Old Spice deo reviews, quite a few gals love to use it.
