Down in the Heart of Texas!

Hey Cadre, so I am needing a little bit of help. I have been looking at a few straight razors and I am curious if any of y'all have used any of these or have other recommendations. So far I am torn between a Dovo Bismarck, Thiers Issard, Boker, and Ralf Aust. Any help is greatly appreciated and other recommendations are welcomed!
Since you’ve got the ones you’ve been learning with, I say now it’s time to go for one your enamored with. Most of those are pretty reputable manufacturers, so just find one you think is purty/sexy/cool.

Dang Pat! I will be of no help whatsoever. I’ve had and used a vintage Boker, very nice razors. I’ve heard great things about the Bismarks too and would like to have one. I’d also like to have a Ralf Aust. I missed one on our BST awhile back.

See? No help whatsoever. Ok ... I’d probably go with the Aust. Just because.
Thank you for the help Tim 🤣
I'm my experience so far, I had to do quite a bit of work to get my edge right on the Dovo Forestal Venessa got me. I've heard the quality has dropped a bit, but that's purely anecdotal and aside from the work I put I haven't had any issues. The bil has a Ralf Aust and loved it until it dulled out after a couple of years, he hasn't put any effort into refreshing the edge. Can't speak on the other two options.
I heard that the Bismarcks were still really good, but I am wondering if the vintage Bismarcks are better quality. Ralf Aust has been a razor suggested to me since day 1, but I always stayed away because of cost. Now I am ready to spend a little more so I am more curious about them. Boker and Thiers Issard have also been mentioned in suggestions and they have some really beautiful razors. Thanks Ben!

Thank you Chris!

Very nice shave today! I did need a much quicker shave today so that is why I used the OREN. Let me just say that the scent off the puck does not do this soap justice. When you start lathering you have to look around to see if you were transported near a camp fire! Man this stuff smells awesome. The dry down seems a little incensey, but lately I have had a few soaps smell like that so I don't know what is going on there. Very nice shave and even better scent. Another winner in my book!

Thanks for reading Cadre, and I hope y'all had a great Thursday!

Today's shave was a little rough. I somehow messed up the lather and there was absolutely no cushion. I have one more idea on how to get the lather to work before I give up. I love the scents and the slickness, but the lack of cushion is just not worth it anymore. So I will wait a few days and then give this soap another shot and see if my idea works or not.
This was my first use of a vintage Avon aftershave and wow this stuff is powerful. I imagine this is normal aftershave strength for @dangerousdon. I really do like it a lot though and I am excited for my other two to get here.

Also, I have been thinking on it for a bit and I think I have made up my kind and will start up a shave vlog. I'm not entirely sure what direction I want to go. I really like how @elmerPHuD is using his channel to review men's grooming products as well as talk about subjects he is very passionate about. Kensurfs is another YouTube guy I enjoy watching and his channel is solely reviews if I am not mistaken. However, I really like how @NurseDave, @Dave in KY, @BarberDave, @Maryland998, @Majorrich, @GearNoir, @Spider, and many others use their channels to talk about things going on in their lives and not always giving reviews on products. So that is something I will need to figure out. I will be going to Home Depot or Lowes to see about adding lighting in the bathroom and making/ordering a mount for either my phone or tablet. Any and all suggestions are highly welcomed!

Thanks for reading Cadre, and have a wonderful Sunday!

The way most of us here on the cadre approach it, is as an extension of (or in my case, a near replacement for) our journals. That's why we just talk about what's going on in our lives. We make them, basically, just for the Cadre as our core audience. If anybody else decides to watch, then so be it. We aren't out to grow a channel, we're just here to make the cadre better and get to know each other a little better.

Personally, I use a a cheap tripod to hold my phone. Works great, and If I ever want to pick up my phone to do an impromptu tour, I can just pick up the whole thing and go. Got mine from Amazon for around $10. Pics of it in the threads below.

Here are a few threads that might help you out.

Great catch up! Bummer the soap seems to be a dud for ya. Hope you can figure it out. MW has some really nice scentings.

Like KJ and some of the others. If I don't have much to talk about. I just post it up in my journal. Then on the days like today. Ugh. Then I post up a video. Lets just say murphy was female dog to me today. But yea some of these guys put a lot more effort into their videos. And it shows. Mine are just turn on the phone and go type. Think high school. Others are more like college or maybe Bollywood level. And some have studio space at Skywalker Ranch.
Your journal is always a nice read. And I look forward to whatever offerings you post video wise.
