two fruitcakes

I don't know many people that like (good) fruitcakes. I'm glad to see you are one of the few and the proud. ;)

Kathy's Mom made wonderful homemade fruitcakes, and she taught me as well. Here's the secret family recipe. 🤫 The handwriting and stains from actual use are mine. It's best to age it three or four weeks covered in cheese cloth, placed in a cool, dark place, and periodically drizzled with a favorite spirit. Depending on the year, we've used bourbon or some type of fruity wine...both are good!
Fruitcake? Now you are talking my language! I love me a good fruitcake. Though I will admit that I have downed a few fruitcakes that were not quite as good as others. I am a little late in the came, but I still plan on making a loaf or two. Living in Louisiana it is difficult to leave things out for extended periods without that green and white stuff forming. So unfortunately I have to resort to non-traditional methods...the refrigerator. That doesn't allow for me to do the weeks of spritzing of brandy, rum, or whiskey, but I get some of the good stuff on it anyway. I do prefer to macerate dry fruit in rum or brandy or whatever good stuff I have on hand. I have a satsuma rum that I might try this year. Anyway...thanks for sharing the recipe. I'll compare it to what I have!

That sounds great, Don. I'm among my people here at the Cadre! I'd enjoy seeing your recipe and learning more about your experiences as well. My journal is a safe place for all fruitcake aficionados.

I must say while I enjoy Irish cream, the recent "boom" in bourbon cream has seen me replace Bailey's with whatever bourbon cream is on sale at the time! I remember back when you could only get the Buffalo Trace one at their distillery, now there have got to be 7-10 different offerings on the big liquor chain shelf up here in Chicagoland!

I'll give some fruitcake away, but honestly I eat most of mine. I love the way my wife and I make ours. While I do enjoy candied fruit and citron from time to time...I really love the reconstituted (in booze) dried fruit we use in ours. It tastes amazing!

Hello Cadre!

I've been shaving along with the same set up for the past few days. I added some Mike's Hungarian Lavender to my rotation, bringing my soaps in rotation up to a total of five.

We completed all of our Christmas shopping over the past week. My Bride loves to decorate and actually has most of the room layouts in our house configured on an iPad app. She wanted a new swivel rocker. We shopped (action shots below), and she ordered one with the fabric she wanted. The color will be none other than Mushroom! The furniture salesman applauded her color choice and pointed out (correctly) that I have absolutely no skill in coordinating fabric colors. :ROFLMAO:

We also made a trip to Bardstown, KY for a few Christmas items including two fruitcakes and several blocks of Walnut Chocolate fudge from the Abbey of Gethsemani. The fruitcakes are the good ones that are heavily soaked in good ole Ky bourbon.

The highlight of the week, however, was that our doc took Kathy off the crutches and out of her boot! She had a stress fracture in her foot/ankle (the talus bone) and had been wearing the boot for eight weeks. We were blessed to learn that it is healing nicely and that she's able to walk short distances normally.

The sun poked out today, and I met a longtime friend for lunch. Afterward, my Bride and I ran some errands which included picking up a 1.75 liter (or ~0.13 Hubble-barn) bottle of Irish Cream, a necessary coffee additive when the weather turns cool. Like this afternoon, for instance. 😉:coffee:

@woodpusher...in the hills of Kentucky, we measure volume in liters, not litres, and sometimes even Hubble-barns. Murica!

That's all folks!

Grace and Peace.
Awesome news about Kathy's foot, Charlie!
Irish Cream? Nice!
Fruitcake? Yeesh...

I'm up early this morning. Despite the severe weather predictions, it was relatively quiet here last night. Thankfully, there was no wind or water damage, and the electrical power was not disrupted. However, it appears that the western part of Kentucky and several other states were hit very hard. I'm sure we'll learn more as the day unfolds. I pray you all are safe and well.

I plan to enjoy a nice shave this afternoon. My Bride and I will join our Sunday school class tonight for a Christmas party. We also have a family Christmas dinner tomorrow with my Bride's brothers and their wives. It should be a very nice weekend.

This week, a dear friend was admitted into the hospital with a severe case of COVID. At this time, he is stable, but he has a long road of recovery. Prayers for him and his family are appreciated.

I hope you all have a great weekend.

Well, I am up early with you! I have been getting up on my own around 4:30 AM, not sure why. I used have the baby that would do that for me. And now that she is sleeping through the night...UGH!

Bad weather can be expected from time to time, I am just glad it wasn't all that serious for you. Though it's always hard to think of our neighbors that might be in harms way.

I hope your friend recovers quickly! From everything that I am read, the monoclonal antibodies is the best treatment out there and is authorized to use! I'll keep your friend in my thoughts and prayers!

Don, there's nothing better than babies, even at 4:30 a.m. We volunteer in a children's hospital ICU (currently on hiatus due to COVID) and can't wait to return. I miss my sweet kids and the daily viewings of Moana, Lion King, and Frozen!

We get our share of tornadoes and storms here in Kentucky, but usually not this time of year. Property can be replaced, but it would be unimaginable to lose a family member or friend in this way.

Thanks for the prayers for my friend - much appreciated. I'm thankful for all the treatment options that have been developed in such a short period of time. I listen to a weekly Mayo Clinic podcast and try to stay informed.

I hope you have a great weekend.

Merry Christmas!

Today is a no-shave day, as I'm still clean enough from an afternoon Christmas Eve shave before getting together with family. We had a nice visit, exchanged gifts, and enjoyed a 10,000 calorie (each), non-vegetarian, low-fiber dinner. I don't like to brag, but we pulled together and pillaged a good-sized hunk of fruitcake as well. That's just what families do.

Today, we are spending a quiet day at home. My Bride is out of her boot, and her stress fracture has healed nicely. We just got home from a walk and even did some cleanup in the back yard. It will reach 70 degrees (American) here today. I like spending Christmas in short pants and t-shirts. So far, I haven't received any complaints from the neighbors even though there were gasping as they looked out their windows at me. :ROFLMAO:

I've been using my Weber DE, GSB blades, MdC, Stetson A/S, and Aramis EdT for the past few shaves. A big donut hole developed in the MdC, so I'll probably finish it off before moving back to my soap rotation. I read in another journal that nobody in their right mind 3017's a puck of MdC, so I figured I am supremely qualified for the task! These days, my shaves range between 1+ and 2 passes. That puts me in the top 1% of old guy shaves 'round these parts. 😲

I lost a dear friend to COVID this week. He fought a month-long battle and spent the last couple of weeks in the ICU. He was faithful Christ follower, and I know he is with Jesus today. I still miss him. His name is Bernie. For those so inclined, I'd appreciate prayers for his family in the days ahead. I gave him a Weber DE a couple of years ago, so I decided to use mine awhile longer before putting it away. He was a head and upper body shaver. He had Ephesians 6 (The Armor of God) tattooed on his entire upper body. It was a incredible conversation starter. Here's a photo of Bernie doing something he enjoyed:

I hope you all are spending time with loved ones today. I am thankful to count you all as my new, clean-shaven, and reasonably well-adjusted friends. :)

Merry Christmas!
