Charlie's Shaves & Shenanigans (not necessarily in that order)

Hope the doc visit is all good. 👨‍⚕️

Thanks for the mention of the hiking shoes/boots. My wife needs a pair of something (as do I), as she has mainly sneakers and winter boots appropriate for getting to/from the office. Nothing appropriate for trails and hiking at all. Maybe this is something I can get her now that she is much more into non-paved surface walking. I'm surprised she has done as well as she has, given her footwear.

Thanks Sam. The doctor's visit went well, and we have a few minor things to follow up. My Bride assigned me transportation, logistics, and ice cream duties, and her job is to keep getting healthier. She had a stem cell transplant in 2020. She's in remission and doing great.

We have good friends in Whaletown, British Columbia, and they are avid hikers. They recommended Oboz. This is my first pair of hiking boots. I generally walk in different kinds of athletic or (old man :)) walking shoes, but I can tell already that these will be much better in terms of slip resistance and foot/ankle support. I'm breaking them in for an upcoming trip to Italy with our BC friends where we'll be doing a lot of walking. (It won't take much to break them in. I've noticed one small spot where the shoe rubs my ankle, and I'm sure this will be an easy fix.) REI had some good deals when I purchased mine last year. You'll see all sorts of Oboz shoe reviews on YouTube.

Our friends recommended Vessi shoes for my Bride. I believe they are made in Canada. My Bride likes them for walking, and they'll likely go with her to Italy.

Good morning, gents.

Yesterday was a no shave day, but I spent time with sharp things anyway. A friend is making me a knife roll, so I cleaned and lubed my knives yesterday in preparation for it. I've had some of them since I was a kid, and a few of them belonged to my Dad. My Sister gave me the bronze knife with wood handles from Thailand (third from the left, top row) for Christmas. It has been in our family since we were kids.

My Dad collected and traded knives over the years. As a kid, his favorite folding knife pattern was a Barlow. I have two (second and third in bottom row) in his honor. My Sister and I each got two near what would have been his 100th birthday.

My favorite folders are Canoes (first one in bottom row), Barlows, and Trappers. I don't currently have a Trapper, but I'm looking for one. I'm also a Swiss Army and and a Spyderco fan. I'll reach for one or the other these days for my daily carry.

I spent a couple of very relaxing hours cleaning them up, admiring them, and remembering where they came from. I can't wait to do it again.

I can't find one of my Swiss army knives, and it is driving me nuts. I hope it will turn up. If you find it, please let me know.

I enjoyed a nice and easy shave on a couple days of growth. These days, I get 'er done with one pass and a few touch ups. Since @woodpusher is pushing his blade, soap, patience and luck along with his chess pieces this month, I will let him vicariously enjoy my luxurious shave. I used Stirling soap, which spontaneously busts (or bursts for you Yankees) into a voluminous lather when you look at it sideways, and I gleefully tossed my dull, worn out, used up, oxidized, soap-encrusted, water-spotted and expired blade after the third shave. I seriously don't know how I made it this far on the same blade.

I found a lonely half-blade in the drawer and dropped it into my Parker SRX shavette for my next shave. Should be fun.

Not to be outdone by my kid Sister, I located my stash of "little" knives AND a vintage leather knife sheath.

It's a beautiful, cold day here in the hills. Thankfully, we didn't see much ice or snow from the recent storm, and the power stayed on. We're gettin' a (very) few things done around the house and catching up on the Olympics, basketball, and coffee today. I hope you all are having a great weekend.

Grace and Peace.

Those mini knives are really neat!

3 shaves on one blade - you are living dangerously my friend!😂

I don’t have cable or a subscription service - but was able to catch some highlights of the Olympics On YT - that laser light show was pretty impressive!

Thanks, Chris and Brian.

The little knives are bracelet charms, but they do have folding "blades." My Dad had a bunch of them, probably for giveaways.

It's not a hard and fast rule, but I've been mostly a 'three and out' guy on DE blades for years. I typically put four shaves on my Trac II blades (used mostly when I travel) and seven shaves on Feather SE blades. I have more than a lifetime supply and enough to share with guys getting started in the hobby.

Blade cost per shave is insignificant compared to other aspects of the hobby (many of mine cost less than a dime each), and I never have to compensate for a dying edge. I don't remove blades from the razor between shaves, dry 'em, rinse 'em, dip 'em in alcohol, flip 'em, strop 'em, etc. I minimize handling to keep from getting cuts or damaging the edge. That's just me. Everyone's different. I'm happy to cheer the blade pushers from the sidelines and join in the shenanigans. It's all good in my world, and I try to not take any of this shaving stuff too seriously. :)

The Olympics are fun, and I'm sure you can catch more than enough on YT.

I hope you both are having a great weekend!

I enjoyed a nice and easy two-passer with the Parker SRX shavette this morning. It was reasonably close, comfortable, and no there was blood on the steel when I finished. I'll use the SRX once more and then return to my R41 for a few shaves. At my rate of soap usage, this puck of Stirling Executive Man should last though the end of March or thereabouts. I haven't checked to confirm, but I may have another puck in strategic inventory.

We're back from running errands, including the post office where I picked the knife roll my friend made for me. It's perfect for what I need. The net result of my recent knife focus has caused me to start shopping again. We'll see where that goes. Our friend also made a couple of small travel cases for my Bride.

We lost a friend due to complications from metastatic prostate cancer yesterday. He fought it for several years, and he was taken much too young. It's a stark reminder not to take life for granted and to keep up with routine medical checkups.

It's sunny and warm(er), so we plan to get outside a bit this afternoon. I hope you all are having a nice start to the week.

Grace and Peace.
