Fine Italian Citrus AS
What a Fine shave. Because I was camping and working all weekend i ended up with a 3 day beard needing to be shaved this morning. The extended growth allowed me to confirm the direction my beard grows and made for a satisfying shave. The Hornet was my first truly shave ready razor and the cause of many a flesh wound during my learning curve. The toe is square with a barber notch and it is honed all the way to the end, getting this one wrong often meant plunging that square point into my cheek. I wasn't planning to retouch the edge but when i stropped it last week the tow was leaving marks on my strop so I touched it up and set it aside. I am super happy i chose to do that touch up because the result was fantastic.
The shave was quite nice. This was the first time for me using the Italian Citrus soap, i found the scent a little strange but the lather was wonderful as always. Although the two scents are nothing alike, i couldn't help but think Tabac when i sniffed the air this morning. The shave itself was a simple and efficient 3 pass event yielding the BBS we all want. I am getting more and more of these 3 pass/no touch up BBS shaves these days.
Awesome shave today, Chris! I have a couple of razors that threaten you with a good time, errr...with a spike point. Glad it didn't reach out and give you a love bite. Always good when you can get to BBS without any touch-up!
Had a very nice shave today using a newly created shaving cream and the Dalgren. Today needed a small touch up but was largely a 3 pass BBS. If you have ever used the Dalgren frameback you know how thin the tang is (little more than credit card thickness) and how small the blade really is (less than 9/16). I have heard one of these described as "flipper" because the size and shape are very conducive to edge stall and tendency to flip. I have a few of these and don't really enjoy all of them, i am guessing I will eventually release a few currently captive razors to the wild.
The soap/cream for today is one i made last night. I was testing a couple theories with the intent to create a cream style soap (not a croap). While the physical characteristics of the cream aren't to my liking i find the performance very good. I am basically on Beta 4 now because the formula changes and method of production have changed enough to warrant a new beta number. Once i nail down the cream consistency I will make some mods to the recipe and process to produce a croap or firmer puck. For quite a long time i have let my preference for and desire to create a firm, puck like, soap limit the potential for a better soap. I now believe if I am willing to accept a softer soap the quality of the experience can be improved.
From a performance standpoint the cream hit high marks in most areas. Easy to load, just dip and go. Easy to lather and ability to take on a large amount of water. Slickness that was just better than average and residual slickness that is well above average. Post shave feel is nice, but to be fair I rarely complain about the post shave feel of most any soap. Good stuff ...but i failed completely at scenting this small sample, my wife can smell the scent but i can not.
