CBLindsay's brain droppings

Every time I read one of your posts Chris, I tell myself that this is the day I will pull out the straights and really start the journey. I have three straights ready to go! But I never follow through. Maybe this weekend is the time! Some really nice thoughts Chris and I look forward to your celebratory 1,000th shave!
I’ll make you a deal @dangerousdon, if you wait until my strop arrives we can start the journey together. It should be here on Monday.

I’ve got two now, thanks to the yard sale. Let’s see who lets the most blood.

1000! Sweet! Can't wait to watch that one. They need to stop distracting me with Vectors and stuff so I can get back to the SS.

General shaving check in and update...

Since hitting the 1000 straight shave milestone I have devoted a little more time to experimenting with other stuff. One of the things I got to play with is the new roller guard base @Dave in KY gave me. Over the last year or so I have not had many DE shaves so simply returning to the DE was a challenge. My first run with the roller guard base was with a blade that used to be a favorite of mine, the Personna. Unfortunately the Personna disappointed SO much I was forced to consider abandoning the idea of using a DE again. Fortunately, loading a Bolzano blade resulted in a much better experience. I had not tried a Bolzano blade before but it was one I had intended to try before abandoning the DE many, many , many moons ago. In a nut shell, I count the roller guard base as a win. I don't know if it is a game changer but it certainly was an improvement over the basic safety bar and I am happy to have it. The Bolzano blade was as good as any, not a standout in any particular way.

At the same time I made the brief switch to the DE set up I set out to 3017 the remainder of what had been a 5 ounce tub of Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet shave cream. This particular cream was a disappointment when I first tried it but I was determined to figure it out or die trying. The truth is, at the same time I began the DE/Penhaligon's journey I had received some news that had me in no mood to even get up in the morning let alone risk life and limb with an open blade razor. The basic set up provided a sufficiently acceptable result with a minimum of effort so i stuck with it. At some point I decided to grab the Schick shavette I got earlier this year, load it with a Feather Pro and add a little more risk to my morning shaves. ...all the while sticking with the same Penhaligon's cream.

I kind of think my choice to stick with the Penhaligon's cream and schick shavette this long was a kind of personal punishment. If not the choice of equipment, the fact I was using the same basic gear everyday (I rotated brushes every day or so). By this last weekend it appeared I might be able to finish the tub of cream off within a week so i accepted the challenge and pledged to finish the tub. Turned out the tub only had a few shaves left and was finished off yesterday. I can now say I finished a full size tub of something. I'm still using the Schisk/feather pro set up and will continue to do so until I determine the blade has reached its natural end. I suspect that will occur soon as I have had several weepers develop on my left cheek and neck that I attribute to the blade catching and dragging.

While my funk has put a bit of a damper on my shaving mojo I have found the new hope in the coffee roasting hobby I began 6 months ago. The hobby shares some similarities to the traditional shaving hobby; it "saves me money", requires unique gear, requires advance planning and/or prep and has endless variety ...and it is something that provides something exciting to look forward to in the morning. I won't even begin to chronicle my coffee adventures here but you can trust me when I say I have fallen into another rabbit hole, one that hasn’t really saved me money.
