CBLindsay's brain droppings

....The PCN Rosa is one of my favorite soaps, with a strong and unique scent....this scent is equally repulsive (amber) and intoxicating (everything else)....
I always enjoy reading your posts - especially with comments like the above - LOL. You frequently lean towards a "yin and yang" type of view with shaving stuff. BTW, the Rosa is definitely amber heavy, I agree. I dig it, but of the 3 PCN soaps, it's my least favorite.

Catching up. Some awesome stuff here, Chris!

SWMBO is much more invested in the hobby now, especially since we use the products for her leg shaves. The negatives are that she is following all my favorite artisans on social media, so she knows when something new comes out and there's no way for it to just "show up". But on the plus side she is much more understanding of the limited releases like THB, and as long as I limit myself to big purchases several months apart then there is never any conflict.

Straight Shave #875

It's a good thing double and triple dog dares don't do much to persuade me or I would have started in on a puck of Williams this morning and missed out on a pretty awesome shave with Haslinger. This morning's routine was a bit different in that I used a "pre-shave" oil and bowl lathered (mostly).

As I have already mentioned, my skin has been in full revolt. With irritation pretty much inevitable I decided at the last moment to rub in some beard oil several minutes before the shave (after my shower). I rubbed it in well, massaging it over my entire beard. I am not one who really enjoys the hot towel OR oil, I simply don't like the uber-greasy feel and will usually avoid things that leave me feeling that way. The beard oil i used is one that soaks in super fast, leaving my beard and skin feeling pretty good. I decided I would lather up the Haslinger Schafmilch with the envy shave 24mm tuxedo fan, a brush I am enjoying more and more. I figured I would bowl lather so as to let the oil soak in more but ultimately did some face lathering throughout. Today proved for me that I really don't enjoy bowl lathering, the whole time I was working the lather in my coconut bowl I was thinking about how I was wasting the opportunity to soften and lift my beard.

Once I had the lather ready and on my face all that was left was to grab the Weck and go to work. From the first stroke it was apparent I had achieved maximum slickness. I would like to credit the application of beard oil but Haslinger is known to be a good soap so the nice and wet lather deserved credit too. Maybe it was the combination of oil and lather that had the weck skating over my skin, removing whisker growth with ease. The end result of the three pass shave was a wonderfully close shave with minimal irritation. I had a little feedback from the alum almost as if the blade was still a little harsh (this is the second or third shave with it) but it could just as well have been because my skin is still in revolt. Whatever the cause a little bit of Witch Hazel and moisturizer and all was good.

I've still got plenty of honing to do. I am slowly working my way through my stash but I am finding that most I use could use a touch up to bring it to the highest level possible. I still plan to get rid of some (or a lot) but deciding which ones is like asking me to pick which strip of bacon I DON'T want...they are all so enticing in some way or another.

Time for a confession. I think I may be transitioning away from full fledged acquisition mode in favor of demanding less but higher quality gear. I would like to cull the herd a bit but most of my soaps are better than average in terms of performance and/or scent so there are few obvious options. Ah well, such is the life of The Shaving Cadre.

Chicken?

Nice read Chris. I feel your eczema pain i get a ton of dry rashy spots in several areas usually more so when the weather gets colder.

Haslinger is great stuff indeed! And one that I don't use nearly enough. Man, there are just too many soaps out there!

I'm with you on the face lathering, and you make a good point that when you face lather, that's just more time for the lather on your face to help soften it. I'm not sure I buy the whole brush strokes lifting the hairs thing, well at least not with 1 day of growth that I normally have..... but it stll can't hurt.

Yeah the "lift" i speak of may well be myth but it sounds good. I guess it is possible the brushing action does something to help expose partially emerged growth but that would assume that is something that would happen and be a problem. I DO think, without question, the brushing action is beneficial based on my longer term experience. On the other hand, if my skin were overly sensitive (as it tends to be currently) face lathering might be a trigger for more problems. In any case I just feel the face lathering is important to my outcome.

Good Read Chris, and I wont bestow the Quad Dog Dare on you, as that would be mandatory, LOL

This is kind of where I'm at right now...sort of. I still want it all...but settle for what is really good. I am about to get rid of a good bit of my soap...but I don't really have avrage or below performing soap save a puck or two.

Nice shaves and set ups, Chris. I'm also having a little trouble with my skin now that the weather is officially getting colder. This is the worst it's been in years in terms of patchy flakiness, and I'm about to just start rubbing my face with raw shea butter every morning lol.

I have loads of shea butter available but I don't think i can stand to rub it on my face. I am barely tolerating dove skin cream. My wife is suggesting I use A&D ointment (the baby butt stuff) but I can't get past the scent memory it evokes.

I actually just ordered a ....sigh.... body butter a few hours ago. And this will be the last time I type those words.
