CBLindsay's brain droppings

Very nice work! How's the SOS on that Creed Vetiver shaving soap? I once used a sample of Creed GIT soap and the scent was a solid 5/5.

Off the puck the scent isn’t terribly strong but it’s unique enough that it stands out. It opens up but isn’t a 5 of 5 to my nose

Great work on the brushes and the bowl Chris. Are those brush handles stabilized wood (impregnated with polymer)?

Me too KJ. I am trying to get it done on my scales for the SS and not sure I am doing it correctly.
I am trying to get my video edited but my phone keeps crashing when I try to speed it up.

The one suggestion I can make that will change your life ...WAX PAPER!. Super glue doesn't stick to or dry on wax paper so use it as a work surface and to help spread it around. If you are using a finger, wear gloves and put a sandwich baggie over the finger so you can pull of the dirty baggie and put a new one on really easy. The baggie will also work in spreading the glue but eventually it gets eaten through and your finger gets stuck to the scales. if/when you use paper towels be aware that the super glue reacts and dries very quickly in/on them. The heat is intense and WILL blister your finger.

Great stuff Chris!

I know the feeling about the camera. I've yet to shave on camera and not have at least a weeper.

Straight Shave #858

Been awhile, need to document the details of my journey...

I am at 858 straight razor shaves so my technique is starting to settle in, my shaves are pretty consistent now. That said, I incurred an injury about 9-10 days ago. I had shaved with the NOS Genco Easy Aces I recently acquired from CMH737 the days prior, it FELT sharp and had a seriously sharp square toe which meant I took care to avoid injury. On the day of the injury I was shaving my Easy Aces that I had honed on the coticule to perfection. The size and shape of the blades are essentially identical but the blueing on the tang has been long removed. The coticule edge felt WAY smoother...so smooth in fact I zoned out and got bit HARD. Stupid me, I feel the bite and decide to PUSH through it. I pushed long and hard until I made the conscious decision to actually stop. The flap of skin was easy enough to reattach but the injury left me feeling some pain a day or two later. OUCH

I recently picked up the 3 pack of Razorock What the Puck and have used a couple of them. The price/performance is very good but these aren't my favorite by far. The scent is pretty mild (but nice if/when you can smell it) and the slickness is mediocre. The soap is absolutely a middle of the road soap (which is a good thing) but the price and triple milled status make this one I think will draw a lot of new wet shavers.

I also just got a new shipment from Long Rifle, she had a couple new scents calling to me so I had to. Y'all know I love Love Rifle, the lather is unique and they smell fun. My only gripe is how lightly scented they are, my lazy nose has to work too hard to keep the scent. I was surprised when Amanda included a matching bottle of her aftershave ...She is just incredible when it comes to knowing her customers and making them happy, this is not the first time she has done something like this. I am happy she sent the AS because I have never tried it (other than a small, itsy bitsy, sample several years ago). It is a witch hazel and alcohol blend with fractionated coconut oil for skin food. It is also lightly scented but it feels oh so good. I prefer the high alcohol feel to the watery or oily feel but this ones a good mix. Definitely not a high alcohol AS but it isn't plain old water or oil either. For those of you looking for a soap and AS combo, i highly recommend Long Rifle.

My journey to hone al my razors is progressing but at a slower pace now. I am pretty happy with the edges I am getting so the task is a worth while effort. I am using a pretty small set of stones proving I don't actually need the small quarry I currently posses.

That injury does not sound fun at all. Hope it heals well!

I have only sampled Long Rifle. And I think it is an okay soap. The scents are where it's at with Long Rifle...they are amazing!

Hopefully the injury heals without any scarring. Can't remember the last time i shaved with a straight. I should really try it again to make sure I still can.

Straight Shave #863

TSC Legacy Brush
Colgate Cup soap
CBL Bertha
Aqua Velva

Over the last week I used the General and the schick injector and 5 straight razors of various brands. I have been sticking with vintage soaps, Williams Tonsorial, Colgate Cup, Yardley & some random gnarled up pusck that might be an old Williams puck or Colgate MUG. The gnarled up puck worked well but was a step behind the others. One thing about these vintage soaps, they are plain-Jane. Vintage is a great way to prove that a quality plain-jane type of soap offers a decent experience. I am horrible at ratings systems and reviews but that doesn't matter much when it comes to the vintage stuff because they fall into one of three categories. 1) Horrible. 2) Good. 3) Better. None of the old soaps would qualify as elite as compared to what artisans produce today BUT they more than serve their purpose. I think the "better" vintage soaps set the bar for upper middle tier/lower upper tier, checking the boxes for all things that must be present for a good shave. I don't want to imply these Vintage soaps are only minimally qualified, only to say they lack the bells and whistles an elite soap might have.

Like Chad, My face has been a little unhappy of late. I am allergic to things in the air this time of year and the result is a constant state of near irritation. I have had to be careful to avoid causing an issue, which is why i used the SE razors. My favorite Weck sectoblade proved it was time to change the blade, the shave was decent but the end result was a prickly irritation as if the blade was more harsh than I had first thought.
