Straight shave #788

Posting here mostly to keep the count current, I haven't got much else to add. I evaluated one of my new soap scents this morning and determined it has potential but needs a little more bright vetiver notes. I made a very small sample jar full so I had to use it like I would a sample ...I absolutely hate using samples. I think I am going to do a Spider mash up of some of my various artisan samples so I have a usable product.

I like the new term coined "Spider Mash Up"

I usually don’t like to see the words spider and mash (or smash) used at the same time.....hmmm...
That's my favorite way to use the word. Sure beats screaming and running away, I'm a dad I'm not allowed to scream like a girl anymore.

Saffron...Rose...Oud...I must have it!
Once I have a clean sample container I will send you some. I think it may be a better cool weather scent but I am not objecting to it now. I was a little afraid because saffron can be a little much for my nose but it works very well in this frag.

Straight Shave #789

Today I revisited the Genco deRoma from yesterday. The 30 laps on balsa and 60 on the Bison strop (horse butt) may have improved the edge but I still feel it is lacking. I wonder if my recent repeated uses of the shavette and feather ss have made me desire that kind of keenness ...hmm.

Made a batch of beer based soap last night and tested it this morning. I blew it for sure, what should have been pleasantly scented with a hint of stout smells an awful lot like my experiments with olive oil. It mellowed some over night and when scented with some cedar/leather oil it played nice ...so it may still have potential but I won't be making this one again.

Once again I scooped a sample out of the tub and smeared it in the Capt Choice bowl to load and start lathering. Once again I proved I can't do that. I got too much water into the lather to soon and it was more airy than I like it. When I relathered loading from the puck I got a wonderful lather. Funny thing with adding beer to the mix, the face feel is better and the lather has a different kind of creaminess (assuming it is loaded and lathered well). I understand honey can do similarly.

I have a couple of soaps that contain beer in it also. They all seem to give a great face feel. I am sure this has to do with extra sugars in the soap...what are your thoughts on this?

The added sugars may be part of it but I suspect it is a combination of all that beer adds and does to the finished product. Sugars whether they come from beer, milk, honey or simple syrup is usually done to "improve" lather quality more than for skin feel. Sugars usually lead to more and bigger bubbles which may not be the best for a shave soap but when used in an otherwise good formula the sugars can be a benefit to the lather.
I know that honey is a wonderful humectant and if added in appropriate amounts will improve face feel and aid in creamier lather...maybe I should have played with a honey soap rather than beer.

Catching up Chris!

Great reads and shaves!

hmm now why did this pop into my head?

Had a lovely shave this morning. Two days of growth was wiped away with the freshly re-honed Genco leaving me wonderfully BBS. I have been sticking with my own soaps recently as I experiment with different scent combos and I am loving the lather. I think once I figure out the scent selections I will have a winning library of soaps.

I just finished camping for the last time this summer (as currently planned) and am now back to work with fewer distractions. Out most recent trip was a quick and simple "van camp" at San Clemente State Beach. As far as beaches go this one is pretty good, nice waves and clean sand. The only major drawback is that the parking/camping is on the top of a cliff which means we had to walk a good distance down to the beach. It was also pretty darned hot.

San Clemente is really nice. I was there once a while ago. I'm not much of a Cali guy, but it's undeniable some of the beauty that state has.

Glad you’ve had a good vacation Chris. Welcome back!

Straight Shave #794

Pulled off another great shave this morning. Used a soap that is a pretty much average performer but it smells great...Blades Grimm "smoulder" and a freshly honed straight. The Atouzet got honed on the coti's before a good stropping and boy oh boy did it turn out nice. Gotta love that classic Coticule smoothness.

The temps are still stupid hot 'round these parts but the AC in the office is working and the AC at home is keeping things below 80 so I may survive. How hot has it been? It was SO hot that 2 days ago a family of squirrels BURST into flames, setting the Idylwilde mountain ablaze. The fire was fast moving and took out several houses in the first 5 hours but seems to have been steered around the larger community for now. Bushy tail squirrels and triple digit temps don't mix.
