CBLindsay's brain droppings

Great shave. I have a hard time spending $30 (or more) on a single tub of product.
There are some products (Saponificio Varesino/Nuavia) that are definitely worth $30 or more. As a collector of software I will never fully consume these top dollar soaps so the price is more and obstacle than a value. If you were to set out to own a few soaps for daily use I would totally say get some Nuavia or SV.
I am pretty sure I got this soap on sale for much less than the listed price, but i don't recall how much it was (probably $15-$20 including shipping). I do know i got the aftershave gel second hand and paid much less than retail.

I have one tub of SV (Felce Aromatica) and the matching AS. I got them with a gift card to Italian Barber after Christmas. I have wanted them for a while, but couldn't bring myself to acquire them without the gift card. We will see if that changes once I actually use them.

Great write-ups Chris...that's very interesting on the hemp-seed oil, as I'm somewhat in the same boat as Chris. I can't afford to have a positive test come back, so avoid those pretty judiciously. (though I will partake of a poppy seed bagel every so often)

I've heard people describe the Tubula Rosa as "weird" without any other explainers...your description explained quite a bit!

All I can say about Tabula Rosa is that i would definitely be willing to get other scents IF i could find them at a more acceptable price. I think $20 shipped would be acceptable (cheaper is better). The soap smells great and has great strength of scent and the performance is always very good...and that's what matters most.

I mentioned to Chris off line a new twist to the hemp seed story...according to one source I read, hemp SEED itself doesn't contain any THC at all. The THC that ends up in hemp seed oil products comes from the plant material that is often collected along with the seed. If true, this means how the seed is processed is probably more of a variable than anything else. I have no idea if the same is true for marijuana-cannabis seeds, although I assume so. The source made it sound like the THC might be on the surface of the seed even if no/minimal plant material is present ...it must be washed off to ensure a THC free (as defined by whatever agency oversees the production and labeling).

Some interesting pharma/botanical info!

I had a tub of the TR Steampunk - I definitely dug the scent. The performance was good, but I agree that, for me, it is overpriced.

Straight Shave #850

Rubberset 400 w/24mm TGN finest
CBL deluxe croap (made last night)
Radium frame back
CBL Bay Rum / Capt choice CO9T
CUBA Red

I made a batch of soap last night that I am calling "delux croap" (not CRAP) but I could just as well call it the Arizona Tea of CBL soaps because it is made with the finest stuff on earth. It includes Wagyu beef tallow, organic cold pressed Hemp seed oil, shea butter, aloe and allantoin. The formula and process are proven so I have high hopes for this batch once it is well and properly aged. The test lather and shave this morning proved it was quite serviceable.

The blade for this mornings shave was the Radium frameback, which I believe has a damascus steel blade set in a steel frame. The edge on this razor is a wonderful mix of keen and smooth, making for a lovely shave. This razor was a christmas gift from someone I knew from another forum and it came pre-honed.

The AS and frag for was a spicey mix of goodness. When i first came to this hobby several years ago, i brewed a batch of bay rum. The batch evolved a bit over time as i kept adding things to it, until it ended up being what it is now. It is a classic bay rum with some citrus and added Oakmoss. The base includes Vodka, dark rum and glycerine which makes for a very comforting face feel. To add a depth of scent to my own bay rum I splashed on some captains choice CO9T (mine burned more than his) and finished with a few sprays of CUBA red.

Man, the croap ingredients have me pretty interested and that razor sounds like a stunner.

Great reads Chris. Interesting learning about the hemp seed oil. Hemp is one of those things that I have to really scrutinize the source of the "facts."

Man! I love it when you guys get all sciency!

Catching up on the good Reads Chris, I was dumping my Bong Water ( KIDDING ) some great info here as well

...a quick non-shave related post...
i’ve gone on and on about hemp oil recently, not because I care one bit about the stuff but because I tried a skin product made primarily with hemp oil and liked it. Liking the skin thing I tried, I decided to buy some raw oil and put it in a batch of soap. For those who are wondering, the soap made with hemp is different in many ways from my other soaps, both in how it looks and feels as a soap and interms of skin feel. At least to me, it feels like it leaves a noticeable layer of “something” behind and that something feels good. I am not sure it was the soap or not but it may actually lead to a more oil skin later in the day. Good stuff, I’ll make some available to the masses when it’s done aging.

On a slightly different note, the oil I got is made for consumption as a “superfood”. I have managed to consume a couple tablespoons of the stuff...but it isn’t easy to do. The taste is unique, sort of nutty and green but generally edible. Just for the heck of it I will pick up a THC test kit and test myself after I consume a bit more (if I can consume more). I snapped a photo of the bottle so y’all can see what it says about how “super” it is. I’m sure it is all that and a bag of chips but I wouldn’t know how all that razzmatazz actually helps my body.

I also gave my ailing sulcata tortoise some of the hemp oil blended with various other green stuff. He/she is sick and requires tube feeding. not having a lot of success with the current foods I decided to add a drizzle of hemp oil for a quick shot of nutrients and energy. Wouldn’t you know it,the darned thing became more active the next day... maybe hemp oil IS magical. ...to things that actually eat grass and other green stuff.

You be the judge.

What’s this mad science, human testing? Lol just kidding.

Interesting results with the hemp. I remember it being a pretty big textile fad in the 90s then it kinda died out. Good luck with your continued experimentation!

Straight Shave 855

Rubberset 400 TGN finest badger
Vintage Colgate Cup Soap
Big Ol' Smiling Frame Back razor
Pinaud Whiskey Wood / Avon leather

The razor I used today is the same one I used in the Memorial Day shave I posted in the member video section. After judging the edge yesterday I felt it needed to be kicked up a notch so I gave it a run on the green pasted balsa and a bunch more leather stropping. The soap for today was Colgate CUP soap, an earlier version of what eventually became Colgate MUG soap. I've read that one is better than the other but I think that is hogwash, Colgate cup/mug hasn't been made for quite some time so I think people wanted to apply the Williams paradigme to Colgate ...the new is never as good as the old. Bloom the surface while showering and loading/lathering is a breeze. The soap is very much like most of the vintage soaps i have, which is to say "it's good stuff".

The shave went much better today, not only was the blade in top shape my face felt better healed from the Sunday debacle that left my face feeling raw and irritated. I did my usual nightly lathering last night but followed with some Pinaud AS and clubman talc. A good patting of talc in the evening always helps my face feel better in the morning. Despite the residual irritation i had yesterday, the longevity of my Memorial Day shave was quite nice.

The results of this morning's shave were a solid BBS. Strange though, the alum really burned this morning while it gave no feedback after the bad shave or yesterday's shave.

*the debacle i speak of was a test shave that went terribly wrong. The razor had appeared well honed but the edge became damaged at some point prior to my shave.

I have half a puck of that vintage Colgate you sent me. I am considering making it my next every other day victim once my Proraso is gone.

Great shave today! I had no idea Colgate had made shave soaps! We’re they with Palmolive at that time?

Nice shave Chris, even with the feedback from the alum. Could be that the blade was more keen than you realized?

Oh yes Colgate made some very good soap. I have a roll of Colgate tonsorial pucks that were once used in barbershops, every bit as good as the old tonsorial Williams. I’ll have to check my notes as to When Colgate and Palmolive merged but I believe my cup soap is pre-merg and the tonsorial is post merg.

I think you might be right. Not as smooth as the all Coti edge it was probably more harsh than I expected. I know I was light handed so that shouldn’t have been an issue
