I assume you avoid it because of your job and the risk of testing positive for THC?
I did a fair amount of research on whether hemp has enough THC to cause a positive test result and if so, can it be absorbed at a rate that would actually result in a positive test result. The topic is not easy to "research" because EVERYONE and their dog claims to be an expert and/or have first hand knowledge of someone whose friend knows someone who has a friend that did or did not test positive.
I did find a few useful tidbits though. One is that the US Air Force (and most other branches of military) explicitly prohibit the ingestion of hemp/hemp seed products or supplements in the interest of maintaining combat readiness. At one point (in 2004) the USAF issued a clarification that topical use of lotions and soaps was not intended to be prohibited, only those products that could be ingested were prohibited. Since the issue is whether hemp products will yield a positive THC test result (not really whether hemp really impacted combat readiness) the assumption would be the USAF doesn't/didn't believe hemp lotions and soaps will result in a positive result. unfortunately I have not been able to find a more recent comment on the use of topical lotions and soaps from the USAF but i did find more recent "reminders" to not consume hemp products.
Another bit of useful information is that "hemp" contains less than 0.3% THC and that THC (and most other drugs) don't readily absorb through the skin. The problem with these two "FACTS" is that they only matter when they are indeed true. True, Hemp by definition contains less than 0.3% THC...if it contains more than 0.3% THC then it can't be called hemp. And True, without the help of other substances the lipid soluble THC doesn't easily pass through the skin ...but a little carrier oil or some other benign substance can pave the way for easier absorption. Despite these two truisms it is possible the product being sold or labeled as HEMP has a higher THC content and that the skin care product is made with substances that help speed the absorption of the THC that is present. The most obvious question i had i was unable to find an answer to "is hemp oil a suitable carrier oil for delivering THC and/or CBD through the skin?"
I am pretty confident using a shaving soap made with 1% added hemp oil is not going to produce a positive result. Then again, I am not going to get court martialed or sent to jail if I am wrong. ...but my friend's sister knows a guy who saw on a seinfeld episode that hemp will make you sterile, especially if you wear socks made with it.
Anyway, I will also be making a batch with Wagyu beef tallow that only has grapeseed, shea butter and sunflower oils as the superfat. I like the way the hemp oil feels (particularly as a beard oil) but i don't think it is adding anything the sunflower oil doesn't add.
