CBLindsay's brain droppings

Great shave Chris! Good job for getting comfortable with the Weck. I looked at those before going Feather AC, but they just looked too “Weckid” with that exposure.

The blade exposure isn’t as big and issue but the corners of the blade can bite if you don’t stay frosty. I consider the Weck to be more like a frame back than a standard straight. The feather can be a system unto itself, part safety razor, part straight. If I recall correctly you mentioned getting a shavette/hair shaper, those are very similar and function largely the same with some slight differences in balance. The feather AC is a beast, if I had my choice between a Weck and a feather I would choose the feather ...but I have both so problem solved.

Waaaaait wait wait. You're saying the difference in mass between a 1" cube of dense plastic in and out of water is the same as 1" cube of water. And the difference in mass in a 1" cube of lead in and out of water with also be the same mass as a 1" cube of water?

Not at all Dave. You tare the water, suspend the rock in the water, the mass of the suspended rock in water should be equal to the displaced water weight. The measured mass of the lead would be greater than the dense plastic, but the wet weights would be the same for the two materials in your example because they displaced the same amount of water.

The theory here is that the suspended material is still pushing on the balance through the water to an amount equal to the mass of the displaced water.

sort of. IF you suspend the plastic cube in water the way i describe it will not displace the full 1cc because it is likely going to float partially out of the, only displacing what its mass dictates it should. If you force the material to be submerged it will indeed displace the full 1cc. If you use a lighter/less dense liquid the cube would sink and allow you to follow the same procedure ...except you would have to correct for the density of the lighter liquid since it would not be a 1 gram per 1cc displacement. To measure specific gravity by displacement or wet weight you really need to be testing items with a specific gravity greater than 1. For SG's less than 1 you could use kerosene.

Another thing to consider is the need for an appropriate sized RIGID container to hold the water. If you use a soft sided container the displacement of water would flex the container rather than be captured as weight on the scale below. Too big a container might impede the accuracy of the scale.

WOW, what a fantastic shave. The container holding the soap started to rust so i pulled the puck and rinsed it. After rinsing it just made sense to rub it on my face like a stick then lather. I was concerned because i don't usually do this and boar brushes tend to be picky about getting enough soap to water. I was amazed at how quickly it lathered. The blade felt wonderful. This edge was originally a coti edge and has been maintained with some balsa stropping and lots of leather stropping ...smooth!

The edge felt so smooth i had to contain my enthusiasm and slow down. I was rewarded with a wonderful BBS, heel clicking even.

Now that sounds like a great shave! Slowing down and enjoying it was the right call, most definitely!

I find that rubbing the soap on your face is almost always better than just a brush lather. Great Shave!

Catching up Chris!

Great shaves and reads. Interesting stuff on measuring the SG of your stones.

I mention the most unique coticule slurry stone I have ever seen. I got this stone along with a very roughly cut and strange hunk of Coticule (that is also very strange and unique). It is just better than 3" long, 1" wide and 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick so it can almost be called a hone in its own right. It is a solid hink of Coticule with one side SO hard it simply will not create a slurry, even on the Ark. The other side is soft enough the provide a quick, chalky slurry ...all while being part of what looks to be a single naturally occurring stone. I have used this as a hone but not really explored its full potential. The rock it came with is about 4x5 with one side being the hardest stone I have ever seen with veins of what looks like Coticule, BBW and quartz and the other side being a rough cut and unlapped layer of Coticule. once i get this thing properly lapped i don't expect the Coticule layer to be very thick. Despite being mostly lapped flat i am not sure the odd stone side will be a very good hone ...but I'll rub a razor against it and see what happens.

Does it look like this? Everything you've described sounds like my Les Latneuse. I cannot get a good edge out of this guy though. Unpasted its barely HHT1/2.

Here are a couple photos of the strange coticule I was mentioning. The small one is ALL coti with one side being super hard and the other being noticeably softer. The larger one is most likely a trash stone but I’ve put WEEKS of effort into lapping both sides removing small flake/chips and smoothing the surface. The blue/mottled side is so hard I barely made a dent in it after weeks of belt sander, hand handler and 120 grit SiC. There is definitely Belgian Blue and Coti in there but I spy streaks of pure quartz and what looks to me like granite. Anyone know what other types of rock are found in coticule regions?

Rubberset 600
Valobra methol
ZY Special
Pinaud Clubman

I will go ahead and skip the weekend recap, nothing terribly exciting to report anyway.

This morning's shave was lathered with an old tin of Valobra and the little rubberset 600 and shaved with the ZY. The more i use this little rubberset the more i like it. It is a 20 or 22mm knot but performs like a monster, it always makes a fluffy and soft lather with little effort. I decided to pull out the little La vienette coti I got from Chris H. and give the ZY a run from slurry to water. The edge was fresh off the new sx ark so is was already "honed", i just wanted to see if i could take an sx ark edge and walk it walk to Coti smoothness. It was a simple affair, not a long session by any means. After a flax firehose and leather stropping it was popping hairs with great ease at the toe and heel. I had the impression the middle of the blade was not as sharp but decided to let it ride.

The ZY continues to impress me with its feel and ability to shave, the Coti edge was indeed smoother but only by a small amount. In fact, the first stroke felt like it had a bit of a bite to it, but that faded by the second or third stroke. The Valobra menthol had much more menthol feel than i recalled it having, I liked it. This is a really old hunk of Valobra that didn't have much of a punch when i first used it. I guess cramming it into the tin must have mixed it up.

COMING ATTRACTIONS ...
I spent some time late last night weighing, measuring and photographing my hones. Soon I will get a wet weight on each of them so i can estimate the Specific Gravity as well. I think i will start a different thread to show all of my photos and document the specifics, i just have too many to show here. I am also starting the process of measuring my straights to determine bevel angles and photographing each, I just need to figure out what template i will use.

WOW what a catch up and the blood running from my ears with all the Science Talk. I guess I am a Neanderthal as far as honing

Rubberset 400 TGN Finest
Fine "Fresh Vetiver"
Everite "safety razor"
Fine "fresh Vetiver"
Encre Nior

Fresh Vetiver is a great scent, no surprise several other Cadre members are currently digging it as well. To my surprise my puck of Fresh Vetiver was brand new, untouched. I have gone through a whole bottle of the AS but never cracked the tin on the soap. As I have with the other Fine soaps used over the past several days, I pre-wet the puck before my shower then re-wet the puck after the shower and rubbed it on my face like a stick. This method produces pretty consistent solid results, definitely makes loading a non-issue. Lathering with a somewhat more wet than damp brush made quick work of the lather.

The razor today was a NEW OLD STOCK everite with a freshly honed blade. Being a new blade the bevel seemed to have been factory set but was indeed needing an actual hone. I used the SX ark to do the honing then followed with pasted balsa strops and leather. The box the razor is stored in has a little strop built into it and it appears to be in good shape. I suspect it is actually a soft leather loaded with some form of strop dressing, when i wipe the surface i get a red residue on my finger or towel.

As seen in the photo i attached below, the razor is a simple design similar to the GEM ...or like a straight razor with a guard. The feel of this blade on my face was nearly identical to a schick injector. Unlike the other safety razors utilizing the honed hollow ground blades this razor leaves the blade edge free (not held tight) to flex as if it were a straight razor. I suspect this design played into the way it felt on my face BUT, i still think it felt more rigid than flexible.

The shave itself was a 4 pass routine with some touch up. Figuring out the best angle was not all that hard but it wasn't instant either. Despite really needing the fourth pass, the shave resulted in a comfortable BBS. So comfortable in fact the alum gave zero feedback.
