Bourbon Country Shave Journal - Dave in KY

Razor: Rockwell 6s Plate 5

Blade: Gillette Rubie (8)

Brush: Paladin 26 mm Lime Lotus

Soap: CBL Soap Tabac/Leather

Aftershave 1: Humphreys Alcoholado Maravilla

Aftershave 2: Avon Leather

Up early for some study of today's lesson and an enjoyable shave. I'm trying to concentrate more on the shave verses just being on autopilot and going thru the motions since I'm going thru these CBL samples. I picked Tabac/Leather as it was another scent that I was drawn to. After smearing the sample in the bowl I got the residual soap out of the container and smeared on my face and did a hand lather to raise the Sebum Dave talks about.(I typically neglect much of a prep) While I got a nice close shave, it didn't seem to be much if any different then my normal routine. Still it was an enjoyable change that added to the experience if nothing else. Typical lather on 1st pass but may have pushed the water as 2nd and third got watery and airy. 1st pass I felt some tingling but not enough to abort this nicely scented soap. 2nd an 3rd pass the tingling increased til 3rd pass I rushed to get it off my face so unfortunately, while this is a GREAT scent and soap overall it is a no go for me as I continue to try and figure out what my triggers are for the tingling on some and not others. I felt it would pair well with the Avon Leather and it certainly does.

Hope the Cadre has a stupendous day !!

Ooh...sorry about the irritation Dave. It happens from time to time with me also...and it sucks...because most of the time it's a soap that I really like!

Nooooo! Well that’s irritating (see what I did there?). You’ve done leathery soaps before though right? Must be something in the Tabac scent?

Bummer about the irritation, but luckily it wasn’t violent enough to abort. Hope you can narrow down the offender soon.

Exactly, oh well got others to enjoy.

I do see what you did ! Lol, yep other leather with no problem and don't remember if i reacted to Tabac but only used it once or maybe twice. Will have to recheck at some point.

Razor: Timeless .68 OC

Blade: Gillette Rubie (4)

Brush: Eric Sorrentino Hybrid Envy Shave Silvertip

Soap: CBL Soap Aristocrat

Aftershave 1: Humphreys Alcoholado Maravilla

Aftershave 2: Skin Bracer

So CBL sent a sample of this to my father in law which I believe he calls Aristocrat and is Black Rose Oud with Money scent added. I was using to see if I had a reaction to the rose. After 1st pass I think, Oh yeah I just remembered what I was using and no real reaction. After 3rd pass little to no feeling of tingle so could have been razor/blade if anything. I may just have been imagining it as anything I thought I might be feeling was so light. Hmmmmmm, will use 1 more time but maybe rose isn't the issue. The brush I LOVE the handle and look and feel of the Badger but I'll never get another Envy shave knot.........shed another 4-5 hairs throughout the shave. Like I said I love the brush and it isn't Eric's fault. I'll just keep using until I can afford to get the knot replaced with a good quality one so looking for good recommendations.........TGN? Others? Topped everything off with Humphrey's and Skin Bracer. Have a great day Cadre !!

If you can cough up the moolah...Shavmac makes one of the best knots out there. The TGN and Whipped Dog knots get a lot of love. I am sure there are others. I think Maggards is making Badger Knots now also...not sure how they perform though.

In time when I can, I'd rather spend enough to be sure it's right cause the handle is awesome. NurseDave swore me to a break on purchases though........................

So we let others dictate what we can buy? I mean...other than the SWMBO?

No no, I just find amusement in the declarations that purchases will be on hold because they are always followed by the announcement of a purchase not soon after. Heck, you haven't bought anything for a full week at this point right?

*cough*Plissoft knot*cough*

Good shave Dave, I hope the no reaction wasn’t a fluke either. Did you actually like the scent?

It was a nice scent but not wow to me like some have felt. That's fine as I have enough others from CBL to keep up with more in my wheel house. Plissoft, hmmmmm, I just Pif'd my Big Bruce away and will need another eventually. i actually was thinking I may wait for it to lose more hairs till I decide to change it and send it back to Eric to get a Cashmere put in it, which would look awesome with this handle.

I bought my last two knots from a store on Etsy. Got a High Mountain White badger and a boar both for under 50$ and Eric spoke highly of the quality of the knots when i sent them to him. I will look back and get the name of them if you want it.
