Cola based theme today and oooh so nice. This one is ver cardamom heavy like the real thing. The special part about this shave is always the brush

Crafted by our very own @Smattayu really captures the theme

Back to the shop today for tonsorial stuff. Hope you all have a great day!

What’s up with the steel blade? At first glance I thought it was Damascus, but closer inspection revealed it’s not. Que pasa, mi amigo?

Didn’t know that there was such a thing. Very cool looking.
The metal is treated to create the black look, but when hone it removes that coating to expose the steel and edge. Not sure what the coating is. @ShawnF may know, since he is our Master Forger

There are generally 2 types of steel used to get this effect. 15n20 is commonly one of those because of the nickel content. (Sometimes just nickel is used) The other steel would be more of a common blade steel like 1095, 1080, 5160, 80crv2, etc...
After the two are forge welded together, forged to shape, ground, and finish sanded, the piece is dipped in some sort of etching solution like ferric chloride.
The pattern shows because the nickel resists the acid and stays bright, while the other steel takes that dark look.
There are other things to add to it, like mosaic patterns, using coffee to further darken, mixing metals like copper or brass in the mix.... Thats what makes Damascus so unique.
