3rd Annual February "One Blade" Challenge!

Razor: RR GC .84p
Blade: Wilkinson Sword (5)
Brush: Stirling Synthetic
Soap: Bootlegger Willy (4)
AS: Clubman Whiskey Woods

No issues to report. The blade shaves on!

Alrighty, today was day and shave 8 on this setup. As such, knowing we have 20 more days, I opted to flip the blade over and clean everything.

There certainly was some crusty soap and whiskery bits in there, so I think this was a good move. I also gave the blade two laps, for each edge, on my cowhide SR strop. This was more to clean off any residue or oxidization that may have built up.

Today's shave was great, so we will carry on with the challenge.

After nine shaves I’m definitely starting to feel some tug on this blade. It’s not horrible but there’s a noticeable difference. Thankfully this is a heavier razor so it helps me resist the temptation to apply more pressure to my face. The residual slickness on the Williams Mug experiment I have going on really helps things a lot.

Just finished shave 8 with the Lab Blue, and so far so good. I had a weeper on shave 6, which scared me a little since I typically bin after 5 shaves, but shaves 7 and 8 had absolutely no issues so I'm chalking the cut on 6 to be user error.

And that's an important thing to note. Sometimes, I'll have an off shave. Maybe my concentration was off or I'm just not holding the razor right, and I end up with a rough shave. It's winter, maybe my skin was just extra dry that day... not the blades fault! Most people when they have a rough shave will instantly toss the blade, especially if they are near the number of shaves they'd typically get. But I always press on, and usually the next shave is just fine. I think this is where folks sometimes get the notion that their blades won't go as long as others get out of them. But if you are focused on testing longevity, you should be willing to ignore the occasional one-off rough shave, for the sake of the greater longevity.

Shave #7 for me today, going well so far.

Yep, that's what I have always done.

One thing I noticed lately, even prior to the 1 blade challenge, is that I get better life/more shaves from a blade if I dry it off well. My normal routine has always been to rinse the razor well, shake it out a few times, and give it a quick wipe with a towel and toss it in the stand.

Lately however I have been doing more of a stropping action with the razor on a towel when I am done, maybe 10 or 12 laps. This change in routine also coincide with me starting to use Wizamet blades and initially I thought it was the Wizamet blades giving me more shaves, but I now believe it may have more to do with getting that blade edge dried off much better after each shave. After the 1 blade challenge is over I will probably test this out with a couple other blades to see if I get more life from them too.

Happy Hump Day! Another smooth shave and the ProLine is still going strong after 5 shaves. Love the smell of Lavender and Violet and yes I know it isn’t “Tuesday” but it smells like it is! Enjoy your day!
