Our little corner of Pennsylvania went Green today (almost green in Philly proper). All of the public health approaches have been working so far, and cases and hospitalizations continue to fall. I’m hoping that common sense continues to prevail and we stay this way. My haircut is scheduled for 12 days from now. I will have the first legal haircut my stylist gives.
 
At first, all this felt like a movie. Watching something that we never thought would happen. Now I feel like there are two different worlds. Things are opened up in a lot of the US. TONS of people not wearing masks, saying "they will be okay". Based on what, I don't know. And then the other parts of the world recognizing we're out of control and banning travel from here to there. And our hospital system is back to over 200 inpatient cases. We are just shy of what our max was in April. We're opening our COVID unit back up today. I really just can't fathom the mentality of people that, based on nothing at all, truly believe they won't get this by acting like nothing is going on.
 
We blew past our record number of cases and I believe will be setting new highs every day for a while. The Bay Area is also dealing with a neat little situation where inmates from one facility with COVID were transferred to San Quentin in theory to protect them from getting it. You can guess how that turned out and now there are over 1,100 inmates with COVID there. Plus over 100 staff. I'm not sure how many hospitals now have patients from there, but it's at least 5.

Hopefully not some politician’s sick idea to lower prisoner population :unsure: :eek:

You hit the nail on the head when you said "Based on what, I don't know." That's the crux of the biscuit right there. NOTHING has changed. There is no vaccine. There is no specialized treatment that is proven to work. The virus never went away. It's still there. And it won't go away because of all those who lack commone sense and insist on giving this virus a home. Isn't this how entire civilizations begin their ultimate demise? People ignore facts and the obvious that is looking them square in the face? You can't tell me to wear a mask. This is a free country. I don't have to wear one if I don't wanna. You're not the boss of me. I'm the boss of my pajamas. And with that, a musiclcal interlude.

 
Just so we can circle BACK to a more personal perspective.... has anyone been tested? What did you think of the experience itself? Was it difficult to schedule or have done? Did you wait long for results. What is the “positive rate” where you tested?

Why yes Cblindsay I was tested about a month ago, had the swab up the nose and the antibody test. The swab was negative, the results came back quickly. The antibody test never got reported and might have been lost. At the time my test was done my county had a positive rate close to 8% and was testing At a very high rate, things looked very good. In fact, they reported almost 4% of the population tested appeared to have antibodies.

I am scheduled for another test next week. Compared to last time, the process to schedule was painful and difficult and the availability of appointments was very minimal despite the news paper website really pushing the testing like it was widely available. I’m curious to see how busy it will be and if others are able to register this week or if it has filled up. Our current positive rate now stands above 12% (most counties in Southern California are on the rise since June 1ish, our rate picked up about June 7-9)

The test was very easy to do. I think it is definitely something they could provide to a household via mail and do Self collected pooled testing On a per/household address level.

Why am I getting tested again? There are a number of things that go into my thought process but he long and short of it is - I am active enough in public and conduct enough in person meetings I owe it to my wife, clients and community to know my status whether or not I think I have been careful or think I may or may not have relevant symptoms.
 
If anyone wants a free antibody test all you have to do is give blood. The red cross has added antibodies testing to there regular screening process.
I gave last week and the antibody test came back negative.

My wife was tested May 5th when she was admitted to labor and delivery. Had the dual nose swab, which she said was extremely uncomfortable, "like the worst allergies you've ever felt" but the nurse said that was the better of the two tests available at that time. I believe the tests done now aren't as uncomfortable. Thankfully she was negative, as a positive test not only would have meant I had to go home immediately and she would have had to labor and deliver alone, but then our son would have been taken for 2 weeks. He spent 2.5 weeks in the NICU regardless but we were obviously able to visit him, feed him, etc. We were both extremely grateful that I was able to be there with my wife.

Neither of us have been tested since, mostly because we're still doing "extreme" social distancing and essentially staying isolated in our home to try and keep our newborn son safe, with minimal trips to pick up groceries and pediatrician appointments. Once he's 12 weeks past his original due date (was born 4.5 weeks early) we're planning to reevaluate.
 
Don't see the point myself of the testing if I have no symptoms AND I'm taking proper precautions as we are instructed. I could be negative only to leave the testing sight to catch it on the way home. I'm more interested in an anitbody test to see if I had it and recovered but that isn't offered or easy to know how to get as far as I know..........

Here the blood mobiles are giving you a 20 dollar gift card and a t-shirt if you give blood And a free antibodies test too. Just something to think about. You can help by giving blood and get tested at the same time...
