Words of wisd..... Yeah right.... We all know better than that!

Last night I had some time and wrote a nice long post catching up. I hit post reply and I got a "please enter a valid message" pop up.... I think the site just likes making fun of how slow I type or something. Gets frustrating because it does take me a long time to type...

Anyhow... Let's try this again.

A few shaves to start with.

This little Geneva cutlery takes a really nice edge, and CBL.... How can you go wrong with that?!?!?

6S, some blade or another, and XXX Duro formula. I think this is the best base from RazoRock I have tried. Good stuff.

Going all high brow on this one. Fili, MDC, and Paladin. Probably the "fanciest" stuff in my collection.

CBL agian topped off with the Captian. Had to go with the "matching" Cadre brush. This little Gun Metal razor takes an amazing Jnat edge and is one of my favorite shavers.

Homefront and work will be following. I want to post this one before I get timed out or whatever.....

High class Shawn! Good to see ya pop in! Hope all is well in your neck of the woods.

I see I have been missing a lot here. I got a little bit caught up and I found out I'm not the only scary creature in this thread, @dangerousdon and the Mrs. are having a little one, and @Cvargo has been throwing things around the house.
Massive congrats and best wishes to Don and Richelle, and I'm really happy you and your family are safe Chad. I always knew there was something a little odd about Dave, and there is now photo evidence. That's got to be why we get on so good though. Birds of a feather and all that. 😜

I have been so freaking busy with work and personal things going on lately. I'm have been so stressed lately I have watched new grey hairs show up.... Lack of sleep isn't helping either. But If Ben is reading, I have been staying hydrated at least!!

Personal life has just been.... Well.... It's just been. The Mrs. and I are OK, just a lot going on.

PA has everything shut down, but at the last minute some lumber association appealed to NY's governor and got wood processing plants to stay open. Their argument was logging is considered agricultural, but with no processing, the logs go nowhere. They said something about needing lumber to build new hospital rooms or something, but that's just silly talk. Hospital construction is commercial and would use metal studs to meet fire code... But what do I know?

We had a boiler at plant 2 blow out. No one hurt, but did require a bit of fixing. It is still being worked on actually.

A conveyor had a bearing go bad and it almost chewed a 1 1/8 inch shaft in half.

So there was a bit of work putting all new bearings and rollers on a new shaft and getting it installed.

Thank you so much @ShawnF for the kind words! Things are definitely changing on all fronts!

I am so happy that you are still working. I was a bit concerned for you actually after I found out that my Brother-In-Law had to close his body shop (he lives in western PA). But again...so glad you are working! Stay safe while you are doing it!

Been super busy lately... Even missed a couple of the zoom calls now. I think that's three total but hopefully @Cvargo won't call me on the three strike rule. Guess I should have been a little easier on him and that thing he claims is a goatee and I wouldn't have to be worried about it.

I have been trying to pop in the site a little bit here and there as I can though. I did make the mistake of looking through a thread @NurseDave started about scotch.... I got lost quick and could not keep up. So now it's my turn. :devilish:

One of the projects I've had at work was our new lathe chuck. Out old 3 jaw chuck was running out of true by about 8 thousandths of an inch. (.008") Sounds small, but when you are trying to keep something to a thousandths tolerance it really screws you up.
So we ordered a new 3 jaw chuck. It was a "flat back" chuck though so it wouldn't mount directly to the spindle on our lathe without a backing plate.

20200610_094741.jpg

The old 3 jaw was also a 2 piece chuck, so we took the backing plate off of it to hopefully mount the new one onto since it was already tapered, keyed, and threaded to fit our spindle.

20200610_094751.jpg

Of course the two didn't match however. So I took a piece of one inch thick steel plate and drilled a 2 inch hole into it. I then chucked it from inside the hole in the 4 jaw chuck to be able to turn the outside round and to the diameter of the backing plate and cut a recess into it so that the two mated together with less than a half a thousandths (.0005") difference in size. Then I had to drill and tap holes to match the bolt pattern on the plate to attach them together.

Once they were together I trued the opposite face of the plate I made and turned it to leave a lip that would fit into the back of the new chuck. Again with less than a half thousandth fit. Then I took them apart again to drill out the bolt pattern for mounting the chuck to the plate.

Finished product assembled with and indicator on a ground polished rod has about two tenths of a thousandth (.0002") runout. So basically you can barely see the needle on the indicator that reads in thousandths of an inch wiggle just ever so slightly. Not bad for a chuck that was listed to have a .001"-.002" tolerance.

I think you made the right choice going with the flat backed chuck instead of the hump back even if it did create some more work. Stronk work.

Been so long since I've posted in my own journal that the software put me at the first post when I finally found it.....

So I am still alive, still somewhat healthy, and still busier than any weird off color saying you can think of.

Shaves have been somewhat rushed and just done. Haven't had the time to really enjoy what I've been using, but it's been all good stuff. I did get my brushes from Graydog and used them a few times, as well as scoring a pair of ivory scaled heljstrands last weekend. Honed one of them and it gave a great shave. Haven't had time to get to the other one yet.
I should have probably spent that time in the shop, but it was the first time the boss and I had been able to go out in the last 4 months or so other than for groceries, so we went.

Work has been super busy. I have been at the other plant for a while now helping with the boiler that is shut down and whatever else comes up.

Rebuilt the gear box on a rotary.

This one chews up and feeds the sawdust into the boiler.

20200716_081853_resized.jpg

Then I spent a couple days using this wicked looking thing after I finally got it up and running.

20200716_080340_capture.jpg

It is on a long flexible shaft and rotates. It is also connected to a vacuum. You feed it down the air tubes inside the water jacket. Hot air passes through the tubes to heat the water surrounding them to make the steam. They collect ash and buildup and need cleaned annually. There are just a couple of them to do.... (that's about a 4 foot tall opening.)

20200716_080325_resized.jpg

Some of you may or may not remember these pieces that I made some time ago.

20200716_081927_resized.jpg

They go onto this rod and into a cone. The airbag moves up and down to control the speed of the sawdust coming in.

20200716_081917_resized.jpg

And I've also been playing around a bit in a new set of wheels. Definitely not as fuel efficient as @NurseDave car, but it may carry just a little bit more cargo.

And here I am thrilled that I fixed a door by spraying some WD-40. :ROFLMAO: I'm glad you could pop in for a second. Hopefully you can get a chance to enjoy a relaxing shave soon.

The trick was what we had to do to open the damn thing! Who would've thought that dirt and crud would make it so difficult to open a door. :ROFLMAO:
A door on the weewoo box I'm guessing? The salt and sand destroys stuff like that up here in the winter.
