I had other intentions today of a different shave...but then didn't feel like it. Tim @MilkCrate had been using a new Vie Long Horse Hair brush and it inspired me to pull mine out from the bottom of the den. I believe this is the same brush as his...but mine is well broken in. I was given this brush by a vendor at another site or else I may not have owned one at all. I used Storybook Soapworks' Visions and Revisions as I I really wanted something light and refreshing. My impressions on the Vie Long after not using it for probably at least two years is that it is a good brush. It's definitely not my Rudy Vey with a Shavemac Two band Silver Tip Badger, nor is it my Stirling Finest Badger. Some of the Synthetics are even better. I haven't used a boar in so long that I don't even want to compare it to that. But this brush does what all natural hair brushes do...retain water. This brush can hold some water after a soak. Loading this brush was easy. I'm not sure I loaded for even 20 seconds...more like 10 to 15. But it grabbed and held onto that soap exceptionally. I face lathered this morning because I wanted to feel what the brush was doing. It is a bit more scritchy than other brushes I have used...nothing bad or uncomfortable. But if you want the softest shave you can get...this brush probably isn't for you. The most noticeable difference between this brush and others is the way it holds the lather inside the brush. Most brushes I get that big fluff of lather that sits atop the bristles. This brush has the same amount of lather as others...it just holds it inside. This is neithe
r good nor bad...just a different function. This brush seems to be a mix of 35% Mane Hair and 65% Tail. I'm not sure how a brush with more Mane hair would feel or perform...but since this brush is more of an entry level for Vie Long...I would guess a different brush might be on the softer side. Either way...I like this brush for a change of pace and will not be getting rid of it.
The shave itself was wonderful. I changed up some directions and some angles and ended up with one of my closer shaves. I don't think I will ever have a full on BBS or Grail shave...mostly because of the low spots on either side of my throat and the couple of spots on my jaw line...but this was really getting there. This soap doesn't have the post shave feel that I wish it had...but it's not bad either. I felt like a blast of coldness so I layered my aftershaves with some Osage Rub. Let that sit on my skin awhile and finished up with some Irisch Moos. But I am thinking of going back and dosing myself with more Osage Rub.
The Danger Zone
Had to forgo my morning coffee as I am headed to the doctor's office to get some blood drawn. Nothing big, just a routine checkup. Since I have been on my way of eating, I have been getting blood tests done about every three months. I am trying to get off of the meds that I am on...but my doc is taking a slower approach to this than I would like. Anyway...I will share the results when I have them. It's Friday and I am all about the weekend! But I have to get through Friday first. I have been working on this same report for several days now and it is driving me nuts. IT HAS TO BE DONE TODAY! The lawyer that needs it has to prepare his recommendations for charges. But to be honest...this is probably the most complicated cases I have worked on to date. Oh Well...I'll get it done...and it will be great...I always do and it always is.
Here's to a great Friday and a wonderful weekend to the Cadre!
