The wonderful excesses of acquisition disorders...and wet shaving

A&E has really been putting out a lot of good stuff as of late. I am trying to avoid the website not sure how much longer I can hold out.

I've seen the Summer Fig and I am very interested! Let us know how it smells and performs. And Awesome Mail Call!

Thanks Don...so initial impressions on the Summer Fig is that it's a similar scent to the Asian Plum, in that they are sweeter up front with some spices in the background. Unlike the Asian Plum, it's on the gourmand side of the house with sub notes of nutmeg and vanilla rounded out by some woody stuff. I don't have the scent notes in front of me but can pull them up sometime later.

Summer Fig? You have my attention, Sir!

Thanks Chris! If you enjoy the Asian Plum, I think you'd enjoy this as well.

Resistance is futile.

Interesting. I'm curious as to how it compares to the Bath House Spanish Fig & Nutmeg that I like so much.

Good shave Josh.

Fitting mail call. We have one mature fig tree in our back yard, they’re just about ripe and ready to eat off the tree! It’s like eating nature’s candy!

Great shave, read, picture, and mail call Josh!
Your gonna have to move into a bigger room if you keep this up!

Not sure as I've not tried that soap/scent...but a review should be coming tomorrow sometime.

Great shave and mail call.

Thanks Doug!

Long Rifle Hawkeye | Friodur 472 6/8” Square Point
Currently on Shave #525 | Straight shave #322

A late night on the phone led to a late morning, but thankfully with nothing going on, arriving to work a little later was not a problem. Back to the Long Rifle, and I broke out the scale to see what my usage was per-shave. Weighing the soap dry, it came out to 89.2g. I weighed it again after blooming and dumping the bloom water off and it came in at 90.4g. Post-shave I cleaned off the puck/tin and weighed it once more, coming in at 88.0g even, so I’m using about 2g of soap per shave. At this rate, it’ll take me a little while to go through this tin, even if I figure the tin to weight about 20g, I’m still looking at about 2 months of usage (every other day use) before it’s gone. All good…it’s a very good soap (mid-tier 1 soap and phenomenal scent), and this will give me an opportunity to really get to know it better.

The razor for the day was the Friodur 472…and let me tell you. Up to this point, my C.V. Heljestrand’s were my favorite razors in the den. This is very much starting to creep up on them as far as enjoyment in the shave. A great edge as well that was put on by the seller, this being shave #2 on the edge. The star of the show today, however, was the brush. After about 4 test lathers, which included one with the Brush Rejuvenator by Declaration Grooming, I felt it was ready to break out the Shavemac for its maiden use. This is a 26mm 2-band Silvertip in a bulb shape, and to say it is luxurious is an understatement. I had it set to 54mm loft, and in retrospect, 52mm might have been a better choice, as I do like some backbone. But, this is still flippin’ incredible. Why did it take me this long to get a Shavemac in the den? Dunno…but it’s not going to be the last. I might get another bulb shape 2-band and have it set a little deeper to keep the density and provide a bit more presence.

The Shavemac whipped up the lather quickly, (to be honest, it still took a little while as I really do enjoy the lather creation process), and the Friodur was in fine form. I did get a little heavy handed on the last pass (XTG) on the right corner of my chin, where I can feel a little irritation. But other than that, I’m sitting at a very easy DFS+, almost BBS without touching an ATG. Topped off with the matching AS splash, and instead of going with the normal, Penhaligon’s Endymion, I went with an EdP that matched the rustic look of the soap, and grabbed the GTB. Some generous vasiliy’s, and I was walking around in a cloud of old-school western barber happiness. No mail today, so that'll have to wait until the 'morrow!

Thanks for reading and have a great day everyone!

Great question! For your next one, if it's going to be another 2-band (non DO1), go for a fan at the 2:1 ratio. I have had both fans and bulb with that knot, and the sweet spot is 24/48 fan.

Ariana & Evans Summer Fig | Feather SS Kamisori | Feather Pro-Guard (2)
Currently on Shave #526 | Straight shave #323

A great shave today with a new soap, another offering from Ariana & Evans, Summer Fig. I did make a video on this shave, as per usual, but made a few faux pas in there, mis-attributing some of the scent notes verbally (it’s corrected in a subtitle). I grabbed the TSC Legacy Brush as well as the Feather Kamisori to complete the set-up for the actual shave.

Just like any other A&E soap in the goat milk formulation, I was able to get a beautiful lather. I didn’t whip it quite as much as normal, so it wasn’t quite as fluffy as I could have gotten it, but it was ultra-slick. To the point where I thought that the blade had dug into my skin under my chin, give me a pretty healthy filet, but the soap was so slick it came to nothing. This is on video as well…sorry Dave, no blood sacrifice for you today! Three normal passes, no clean-up and I walked away with a very nice DFS+, without any blood-loss. Alum really didn’t give any feedback at all.

Another new item I was trying today, outside of the matching aftershave splash was the A&E Post-Shave Serum No.3. This looks like a balm in the bottle, which is a beautiful 60ml frosted glass bottle with a pump top. But it’s not…it’s a liquid, and is just loaded with good skin food and smells like a nice face cream. Peter Charkalis puts much of the same ingredients in his aftershaves, so my face got a double dose of the stuff this morning. Combined with the moisturizing properties of the soap, my face feels amazing. One other thing of note with this shave. The aftershave, while having the same fragrance, comes off completely different than the soap, and is completely complimentary. The sandalwood and musk base completely come through and are just a pleasant wonderment. If I had my wits about me, I would have just used that as my frag for the day instead of layering the Le Grand Chypre EdT on top of it. With that being said, the LGC did layer very well.

Another day of no mail, so I’m going to get a massive bunch of packages in sometime soon.

Thanks for reading and have a great day everyone!

Josh, Nice shave and enjoyed the video. May have to check out A&E as I've never used it. Felt a dig and no blood is a good save.
