The wonderful excesses of acquisition disorders...and wet shaving

Don't ever stop being liberal with your after shave! After Shaves were meant to splash on by the handfuls...and several at that!

Thanks Don...I normally "glug" out about a full tsp-tbsp of liquid into my hand before rubbing it in. This was an additional glug or three...lol.

Excellent couple of shaves, Josh! Adagio is easily one of my favorite scents as well, and I broke it out this morning. Great score on the Fili!

Thanks Eric! Adagio is one of those scents that I really need to pick up a couple of back-up tubs of in case he decides to stop making it.

Ariana & Evans Asian Plum | C.V. Heljestrand Mk*31
Currently on Shave #518 | Straight shave #315

Still no mail, so another free day for soaps! With that being said, I went ahead and grabbed the A&E Asian Plum, though there were a couple of others soaps that were tempting me and begging to be used. Maybe tomorrow, as there was no mail today and I’ll be in the same boat tomorrow at the very least.

I grabbed the Mk*31 and my Wild West Brushworks 24mm BOSS knot for the implements of whisker preparation and destruction; adding my brush scuttle today to determine how the A&E soaps react to heat. I’ll say right now, the hot lather was nice, but not something I would be able to do daily as my skin gets a tad bit sensitive when doing so. But it feels so good scrubbing hot lather into my face.

The soap actually did very well with the scuttle, the lather not really showing any signs of breaking down at any point during or after the shave, so I think as long as the temperature is only moderately warm/hot, it won’t negatively affect the soap. The 31 was nice and smooth this morning, though I wish I could have said the same for me and my technique along the mustache area and a spot on the left mandible…they’re a little tender. I did walk away with a nice DFS outside of the tender spots. The matching aftershave and Paladin balm (infused of course) calmed down those spots pretty effectively and left my skin feeling wonderful. A few more vassily's of the Tom Ford Plum Japonaise fit the bill quite well.

I got a chance to do a test video with the new editing software this morning, and once I get used to the program, it’s going to be much easier to use this vs. the mobile application. With that being said, the mobile app will be there if needed. Still waiting on quite a few packages to come in, I think 14 soaps in total are inbound at this point.

Not going to post a written review of Asian Plum, as I’ve already posted one in my journal here, and I’ve already gone over the soap base in two previous reviews. But the video is up in my vlog/video journal over in that section. I do have a razor that I need to touch up tonight, so I might try my hand at a rather quick video tonight covering my refresh process. We'll see what it looks like, timewise, tonight.

Thanks for reading and have a great day everyone!

LOL...the hazards with using a word document to draft up a daily journal entry. Some things just kind of slip through. Thanks Chad!

Asian Plum sounds like a yummy soap! Looking forward to going and seeing your thoughts in the review post.

the Asian Plum sounds great. I will have to try A&E at some point, although right now I have too much software waiting in the den.

BTW, Josh....does the a/s smell just like the soap?

I think it does, with maybe not quite as sweet a note to it, a little more spicy oriental feel to it, which is perfect!

14 soaps inbound? WOW! Eager to see them.

Thanks Don...so am I. LOL

Pshhhh...no such animal as too much stuff! LOL

Thanks Chris!

Declaration Grooming Champs de Lavande | Klas Tornblom (the Bamboo Ferrari)
Currently on Shave #519 | Straight shave #316

Last night, I went ahead and refreshed the Klas Tornblom, nicknamed the Bamboo Ferrari, on the JNAT. I recorded it, initially planning on speeding though the majority of it in post-production, but did a lot of talking during the honing and kept it as is. The video is 19 minutes long, which is abnormally long for a refresh. But since this is Swedish steel, it takes quite a few more laps to get right. As seen below, I’m pretty happy with the edge I was able to achieve on it.

Another open day of no new soaps, so I went with a proven performer in Declaration Grooming. I was bouncing back and forth between using Champs de Lavande or Southern Paradise (sweet tea scented), but ended up going with the CdL. I’m glad I did…this is just a plain out awesome scent! Going with the boar brush today in the Semogue 830, it only took a 10 second load time to gather enough soap to build a beautiful lather. No scuttle this morning, as I was a little bit pressed for time. The scent on this is lavender of course, but unlike most lavender soaps such as Fine Lavender Pour Homme or Pure Lavender by DG, this has quite a bit of nuance to it. They use numerous different types of lavender oils in this to come up with something quite unique. The result is nothing short of enjoyable. Much more so than I gave it credit for the first time using it.

Three passes, (WTG, XTG, GTG), and I was just enjoying the scent the entire way through. Strength of scent out of the tub is about a 3/5 and grows to about a 4/5 once lathered, and stays with you through the shave. Performance is exactly what I have come to expect from DG’s bison tallow formula…slick, cushioned, easy lathering, extremely moisturizing, and great residual. Since there was no ATG, I ended with a DFS+, just the result I was looking for and that will allow me to shave the next morning without undue irritation/razor burn. The edge on the KT was wonderful, just shy of being as keen as I like, but plenty sharp and still very smooth.

The last time I used this soap, I didn’t have the matching splash to go with it…but did today. I put two handfuls of splash on, going with Don’s method of “the more the merrier”. No frag outside of that, just aftershave. It’s been about 3 hour since application and it’s still going strong, and projecting VERY well. I’ve gotten numerous compliments on it…very rare around here.

Mail call brought in some very much anticipated gear…a lot of software, some blades, and a particular brush from a certain member here.

First off, Wild West Soap Company and five soaps…

Doc Holiday: Mulled Apple Cider
Rose Dunn: Wild Rose, Coconut, Amber
Aces & Eights: Bourbon, Vanilla, Lavender
Gin & Tonic: Juniper, Coriander, Grapefruit, Black Pepper, Bergamot, Amber
Reserve No. 2: Rose, Black Currant, Lime, Sandalwood, Cedarwood

Next, an order from Maggard:

Oleo Soapworks Sandy Cheeks: Not quite a Hawaiian Tropics feel to it, but with a heavy coconut scent, it definitely smells like a good time on the beach. (the scent is described as "Suntan lotion on the beach") I got the matching AS balm as well
5 different packs of DE blades: Perma Sharps, Super Max Plantinum Plus, Super Max Stainless, Wilkinson Swords, and Ladas Super Stainless.

Lastly, the TSC Shaving brush from Eric. This thing is incredible! Awesome grain, and the knot is set just so that it’s not going to get floppy, and will have more than enough backbone! Can’t wait to use it tomorrow morning! Sorry gentlemen, I’VE got the prettiest brush!

Thanks for reading and have a great day everyone!

Gorgeous setup, Josh. Love the razor. Isn't it great to enjoy luxurious shaving? So much better than what we endured before.

Thanks Bruce! How I put up with the mediocre shaves that I did for close to 25 years still baffles me. I'm glad I found this way of shaving when I did, though SWMBO still thinks I'm weird...that's fine, she's allowed to judge me. LOL

Hmm...Mulled Apple Cider...now that sounds up my alley.

I love the name "Sandy Cheeks"

Looks like you got some really good stuff there.

My question is...when you have to leave your AOR are you taking that massive amount of shaving gear with you? Or is some lucky service member or contractor going to get an enormous PIF? Because that is going to take up a lot of your luggage space!

Thanks Don...

I'm probably going to have a tough box filled with shaving stuff...and ONLY shaving stuff mailed home. Going to have to get another box/bag filled with aftershaves/colognes on one of the rotators back home since I can't ship anything with alcohol via mail. There will be quite a bit of it PIF'd out, but I'll probably do on TSC well before I'm out of here to decrease the amount I have to pack or mail. This is why I've gone to getting balms recently more than splashes, even though I prefer the latter.

Great mail call and reads Josh. I'm looking forward to watching your honing video. Might be a day or two, depending on when we get our proposal out the door. You do have the prettiest Sorrentino TSC Legacy Barzini that I have seen yet, except for mine!

Great mail call. I think Eric did a great job with the drawing. I can legitimately say that out of all the ones I saw, I like mine the best. And I am sure just about everyone feels the same way about theirs.
