The wonderful excesses of acquisition disorders...and wet shaving

Thanks Chris. The soap is nice, however the scent strength is on the weaker side, so I wish it were stronger. I can see with continued use how it would become rather...meh.

IRT the honing, I have a game plan for the razor, now I just hope that it works out. If not...Semper Gumbi!

Congratulations on the new gear! I do love when it’s time to upgrade my electronics.

Good shave!

Only way to really tell what is going on with a razor is spending time with it on the stone, and observing what is going on. I'm looking forward to seeing your video and your honing strategy.

Thanks Dave...

Question on the Director Suite 6. Are you using the embedded YouTube upload function within that app or are you uploading directly through YouTube? I've been using it straight through the phone, but want one on my computer, and am looking hard at the Director Suite 6.

I use the embedded Youtube uploader, but if I take the raw video off my phone rather than my Canon 7D mkIII, then I have to upload it from the phone to YouTube as unlisted then use a YouTube downloader to DL to my computer so I can do editing in DS6. Sounds more of a hassle thatn it really is. Once complete I upload to Youtube via Cyberlink on the Production screen works great.

I have had Cyberlink and Directors suite since Version 7 I think and this is 16 DS6 has some really nice new features as well, it is worth the upgrade cost IMHO

Thanks Walt. I've already run it over the rock a few times and have an idea of what it's doing, so now it's all about coaxing what I can out of the steel.

nice Shave Josh

Thanks Dave

Good info...thanks Dave! Going to look into it when I get back to the room; the last thing I want to happen is to max out the capabilities of the software I'm using and have to upgrade later. I would much rather have that functionality from the git-go and learn along the way.

Barrister & Mann Adagio | Hartford Cutlery 25 5/8” Extra Hollow Ground
Currently on Shave #516| Straight shave #313

A bit of a throw away night after work in a sense…I was working on the new laptop and getting a couple of programs that I needed for future projects. They’re still downloading 12 hours later. Other than that, nothing exciting going on out here, but since I didn’t have any new soaps come in yesterday, it was a free-choice day, so I went with a soap that really doesn’t get used as much as it needs to. It is by far my favorite scent in a soap, with only SoCal Hipster (A&E) and maybe King of Oud (Wholly Kaw) and Victory Shaving’s Champaign Lady coming close. That soap is Barrister & Mann’s Adagio.

Now, I might not agree with all of Will’s decisions on marketing for some of his soaps, but I can’t deny that he does make a good product. His scents tend to the complex, and sometimes he completely whiffs. (Night Music, which I own…anyone want a tub?) But every once in a while, he comes out with a scent that just hits all the right notes for me. Le Grand Chypre was one of those, but SWMBO can’t stand that scent, unfortunately...yet, not even LGC can’t hold a candle in my nose to Adagio. Lime, Cherry, Violet Leave, Lily of the Valley, Galaxolide (a floral musk), and just the right touch of menthol just screams out coastal New England spring to me.

Today, I was using the Paladin Manic Depression, a 28mm fan knot in the El Dorado shape. This has much less backbone than other Paladin knots, and with the harder nature of B&M soaps, I thought I needed to load a little longer than normal. I put the same amount of work into this lather as I have been with previous soaps, and resulted in a lather with some great cushion and decent slickness. I didn’t have all that much time today, so a quick 3-passer was in order. I was able to get all three passes done in a little under 8 minutes and walked away with a DFS…which is fine, all things considered. The Hartford Cutlery was in pretty good form today, smooth and sharp. I wasn’t doing any buffing strokes today, as the only person who would know I wasn’t as close as usual was me. Alum feedback was minimal.

Followed up with the matching aftershave and a sweet citrus EdT in Clinique Happy for Men (it’s orange vs. Lime but works anyways), and I’m feeling pretty good.

Thanks for reading and have a blessed day everyone!

Excellent Shave today Josh! I'm not an overly huge fan of B&M...but I might have to back and try a few. Adagio just smells delicious!

Josh, just got caught up. Excellent journal.

I also saw your video on Soapy Science Lollipop Citrus that you posted to YouTube.

The minty top notes in DSB do indeed include spearmint, but also wintergreen, which is unique. I agree that it provides just a touch of cooling, like a lightly mentholated soap. Very similar to the amount of cooling I got from I Coloniali.

Anyway, the DSB scent is definitely enigmatic. That's one of the things I like about it; it really doesn't smell even remotely like any other soap I have ever tried.

Thanks Don! I put B&M about on par with Fine Accoutrements in regards to performance...their scents range from blowing Fine out of the water (Adagio, LGC), to absolutely (IMHO, as anything) rank.

Thanks Randall! I really did enjoy the Soapy Science stuff, thanks for introducing me/us to them!

Man, you guys are talking video editing software and I just finally ordered a suction cup mount for my phone.

Good shave Josh! Glad you got around to an established favorite.

Hah, I haven’t even gotten that far! I may even have to wait till I upgrade and put out for a higher memory capacity on the phone. Just figuring out how to trim and find the extra memory space is tough on only 16 GB.

Thanks for the review of the Adagio scent Josh. So many really good soaps out there scent wise and performance wise. Thinking that I will continue to try to work on the performance of my MVM soaps, once mastered, then I will start playing around with frags in a more meaningful way.

Thanks Chris...IRT the video stuff, I could stay with what I have going now, which is just the phone, but am really enjoying the post-production aspect of it and wanted to push it a little more. We'll see how it goes. LOL

As far as the memory space, if your phone doesn't have an SD card slot, see about transferring the videos and files over to your computer's hard drive once they've been recorded and do your post processing from there.

Great shave and read. Nice description of the Adagio.

Thanks Doug!

Thanks Walt! I'm fairly neutral on the B&M soaps as a whole, as they are batting about 50/50 with me for scents. Performance is above average, but not "knock your socks off" good. I'm sure you'll get your MVM right where you want it. Scenting the soap I'm not really sure about, but figuring out a scent profile you enjoy should be a fun exercise.

So I was planning on waiting on saying anything, but got some exciting news from our friend our in the littlest state about my recent purchase. I had it sent (from Argentina) a few weeks ago after a winning bid on the 'bay, and just got news from Alfredo that he'll be able to fully restore the blade, and there doesn't look to be any Swiss cheese on the edge, so he'll be able to get a nice JNAT edge on it. Glad I took a (an expensive) gamble on this!

Excited doesn't begin to describe it right now...lol
