The wonderful excesses of acquisition disorders...and wet shaving

Sunday, 13 May, 2018 | Mother’s Day Shave
Barrister & Mann 42 | Brass Colonial General | Feather Super Pro (2)
Currently on Shave #499 | Straight shave still at #300

First of all, I would like to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful women who brought us into the world!

So for the shave today, 42 seemed like it would be an appropriate set of software to use. The scent off of the tub is a pretty sharp citrus with a fairly strong floral component backing it up. The result is quite pleasant, and at a 3.5-4/5 SoS, it’s pretty strong too. Once lathered, the scent does change a bit, with some darker stuff comes through, and looking at the scent notes, it’s the ambergris. I can’t say I’m a fan of this scent note…it reminded me of something, but couldn’t put my finger on it until later in the shave. More on that later.

The shave was the 2[sup]nd[/sup] on the Feather Super Pro in the General. I think I have found my ideal blades for this razor. I was shaving a little faster today, still very aware of pressure, and ended up doing 3 ½ passes after the clean-up. The lather was pretty good, the Paladin whipping up some great suds, but it was lacking any kind of residual slickness. This was curious to me, so I added a bit more water to see if I could improve it, and actually ended up making it worse. Ok, so no water only clean-up. There was only a tiny bit more feedback from the alum than the previous shave, but still less than normal. I’m sitting here about 2 hours after the shave, and can safely say that I’m DSBBS. I topped off with the matching aftershave, which confirmed what I was smelling earlier. Normally, I would have gone with Blenheim Bouquet to match this, as it’s a very similar scent make-up (sans the mystery note), but decided to go with the Juniper Sling instead. It’s still a bright citrus-type scent, so still complemented the 42 well.

So that mystery scent? I couldn’t place it, but it was a musky something. I know it’s the ambergris that I’m smelling, but it was triggering something from my memory…when I put the aftershave on, I finally figured out exactly where I had smelled it before…or at least smelled what my mind associated with this fragrance note...our ferrets. This smelled eerily similar to the musk which comes out of our ferrets scent glands immediately after being washed. Now, that being said, I don’t completely consider this a bad thing, as I love my animals, and this does remind me of them. But, I know this won’t be a soap I break out around SWMBO, as with her sensitive sniffer, me smelling like some stinky rodents is an absolute non-starter. LOL…so much for a shave for Mother’s Day….

Have a great day everyone!

Smells like ferrets, huh? Probably not the best way to market a scent. I am sure that is why they went with Ambergris.

LOL...I think the description came off a little on the harsh side. The predominant scents are of Lemon and Petunias, but when it's lathered, the ambergris comes through a little, adding some depth to the scent...that background scent just happens to smell like one of our freshly washed ferrets. LOL

Well at least the scent reminds you of "freshly washed" ferrets.

Great read, picture, and shave Josh!

Well we have tumble weed scented soap and now washed ferret, it won't be long till the soap makers are contacting us for scent descriptions for sure!

Dont forget to follow up with the cat spray AS!

Nice shave and an interesting scent description. But, I am not sure I want a soap that smells like citrus and freshly washed ferret.

Ok, so now I'm thinking Chris needs some donkey's to milk for his next line of soaps.

I have no doubt the Ferret isn't out of the wheel house for Zoologist soaps.

I thought that was the Veg!

LOL...y'all are too much! Thanks!

All caught up Josh very nice reading.

Thanks TJ!

Getting caught up Josh. Very nice stuff.

Thank you Chad!

I'd be interested to see how he would incorporate an alternate animal protein into his soaps...his soaps are already top shelf stuff, I can't imagine they would be anything but spectacular.

I thought of Zoologist after I made the post...lol

I made some soap awhile back using duck egg yolk, turned out pretty good. When i made it the soap was coming together beautifully, a lovely bright white and fluffy ...then BOOM! The whole batch turned shamrock green. Watching the change in color was fun but my heart sank a little. No sulfur smell but clearly the sulfur in the yolk had turned the batch green. Several people used the soap and reported generally positive results. Egg yolk is a great emolument and really would be a good thing to include but I don't think i will do that again.

Equine milk gives me the willies. I tried to get a couple of milk goats this weekend but the wife said NO. Seems she plans to use goats as a bartering chip to get a new, bigger, house. She said she would buy me goats, suspenders AND overall's IF I buy her a bigger house.

Ferret Milk? It has a certain label appeal doesn't it? "CBL soap, now with ferret milk and Llama spit"

Ariana & Evans SoCal Hipster | Timeless Bronze Open Comb (.78) | Voskhod (1)
Currently on Shave #500 | Straight shave still at #300

The last soap in my den, (at the time of the shave), that has yet to be used was Ariana & Evans SoCal Hipster. Out of the tub, it has quite a few fruity notes coming through. The scent notes, (previously posted here, but why not post again), confirm this, though I don’t really get the first one listed.

Notes: Pink Peppercorn, Pineapple, banana, passion fruit, mango, cade, oakmoss, sandalwood, cedarwood and musk

Once lathered, the last four notes do come through following the fruit-forward top…it creates a great “lounging at a tropical beach side bar” vibe to it. Quite nice, and ultra-enjoyable to me. Almost to the point where I could call it a desert island soap…I like the scent profile that much. Performance-wise, it’s still the #2 soap base in my den…sandwiched between Declaration Grooming and Wholly Kaw donkey milk. I loaded for about 3x longer than I needed to this morning and was left with enough lather for 5 shaves…I just kind of got lost enjoying the scent.

The razor today is one I’ve been looking forward to using for a while now in my Timeless Bronze Open Comb. This has a blade gap of .78mm, so it’s right in the middle of the two SS blade gap options. I loaded up a new Voskhod blade, and got down to the business of getting whiskers off of the face!

Now, this is the heaviest of my razors in the den at about 130g, and also the first open comb I’ve ever used, so there was definitely a learning curve at play here. The result after three passes and a clean-up was, as I feel around an hour later, DSBBS. No grail designator, as there was a bit of irritation/feedback, and I did catch two tiny weepers on the ATG pass which closed up with the alum. I caught myself using way too much pressure at times, getting used to the weight and way it handled. I’ll use it another couple of times, until this blade needs to be binned, and work on refining my technique. I will say, however, the first few strokes were sublime!

There was no syrup smell from the aftershave…it was a nice match to the soap, with more of the base notes coming through. I topped off with the Amouage Sunshine Man, and, while it’s not a great match to SoCal Hipster, I just love this fragrance. I might have gotten a little bit over-zealous with the amount used, but hey…it’s Afghanistan. It smells like doo-doo out here. If I can help make it smell better for me and the people around me, why not go for it?

Mail Call!

I held off on posting today’s shave to see if there was any mail that came in and I’m glad I did. Mail brought with it a new Declaration Grooming soap, Colonia Basalmica. I’m not sure who described it before, but their description of an Acqua di Parma with a bit of green mixed in is exactly what I’m getting out of the tub. Very nice scent! I’m not getting the smokiness out of it that I’ve gotten out of a lot of the other Chatillon Lux collaboration scents, which is nice considering this is a colonia, which I consider to be a much more bright, vibrant scent profile. The smokiness would have detracted from that. The matching aftershave came along with it, (they were out of the salve), as well as a tub of the DG Brush Rejuvenator soap. Hopefully this will help prolong the life of my natural hair brushes. I’ll give a report about how it does when I start going through my stable with it.

Have a great day everyone!

First of all...I have no idea where I've been, but I didn't realize you were in the 'Ghan. Be safe my friend. I know it's a much different animal then when I was there in '04-'05 but there is still a risk. And from what I understand, sometimes a big one at that.

I used the Timeless about a year ago or so and I used the .64 and the .98 plates (I think). My impression was that the Timeless was an excellent razor...probably the best I have ever used. But the variances in the gap was was either too aggressive or not aggressive enough to my liking. A plate at .78 would have been perfect.

One last thing...your brush is amazing! I love the top and bottom of it!

Be Safe My Friend!

Great shaves. That SoCal Hipster sounds amazing. My shave this morning was what you got in today. It is a great scent, I just wish the longevity was better.

Thanks Don! Without getting into any detail, I'm in a pretty good spot, so while there absolutely is the prospect of danger, it's quite low where I'm at.

IRT to the Timeless...I'd be curious to compare all of the different plates against one another. Thanks on the brush...I was lucky enough to win Paladin's Purple Haze give-away celebrating the 50th anniversary of the release of the song of the same name. They made two special brushes, this one and another named "Voodoo Child", both made from dual resins. It's a great brush, and at 28mm has more than enough splay to take up a whole cheek. It's a bit different than other Paladin's I've used...not nearly as much presence, but still more than 95% of other brushes, but ultra ultra soft in the tips.

Thanks Don! The SoCal Hipster really is a great scent. I have a hard time deciding whether I like it better than the Grecian Horse. But they're so different, one being fruity and bright, the other being an oriental spice with a bit of sweetness, that I can't really compare. I enjoy them both about the same!

LOL, you're a walking breath of fresh air!
