The wonderful excesses of acquisition disorders...and wet shaving

....This is an interpretation of Creed Aventus, with the pineapple notes being very forward without being overpowering. During the lathering stage, the pineapple is up front and present, however, the soap scent completely changes once painting strokes begin to a nice woody note with some soft spices in the background....

A "woody note"?

A "woody note"?

Yeah...the best way I can describe it is a very, very soft sandalwood or maybe oud note that is complemented by the spices. It's not patchouli, I'm pretty sure of that. The pineapple note is barely present when the soap is in it's finished lather state. When it's in the tub, or actively being lathered, the pineapple is very forward and present, however.

ETA: I looked up some of the scent notes and this is what I came up with:

Bergamot, mandarin, neroli, green tea, blackcurrant, sandalwood, musk

Totally off base! My nose needs to be recalibrated, LOL. The Neroli and Bergamot are right up front though and are what dissapear when it's finished being lathered.

for the SoCal Hipster here are the scent notes:

Pink Peppercorn, Pineapple, banana, passion fruit, mango, cade, oakmoss, sandalwood, cedarwood and musk

It's pretty fruit forward, but we'll see what it's like when it's actually lathered up.

The Grecian Horse, interestingly enough is based on Parfums de Marly Pegasus...

Great shave! Did you see that Captain’s Choice is taking their Venture AS (their own interpretation of Aventus) and also coming out with a full line? Should be good!

Thanks Chris! I did see that, but I'm refraining on making any purchases of Aventus type scents as SWMBO doesn't like them (she's strange), and I don't want to get hooked on a scent I'll have to stop using when I finally get back stateside.

Great shave!

I have a bottle of the Club de Nuit Intense Man. It is a really nice version of Aventus. I may have to pull it and the Fine Platinum out tomorrow...

Performance wise? Fuggedaboudit! This is right up there with Declaration Grooming, for me, as far as overall performance goes, and just surpasses Wholly Kaw. The only place it’s not quite as good as DG is the post shave feel.

Wow! That is some high praise! You said it's not as good in Post Shave Feel...but how is it? Below average, average, above? Better than most but not as good as? Just curios as Post Shave Feel really is my number one shaving factor.

Yeah, but then you could give your gear to the rest of us!

The ladies are strange creatures of fancy some times!

Yes!

Nice Mail Call Josh! I really like the scent of 42, though I still haven't pulled the trigger on the aftershave. Very nice shave. You're making the A&E pretty darn tempting.

So, from what I can tell, the moisturizing properties are among the best I've used, the only better soap being Declaration Grooming's Project Icarus formula. Wholly Kaw donkey milk was 2nd for a while until I used this soap base. I have to admit that I did misspeak, and meant that it's just shy of Declaration Grooming in terms of slickness / residual slickness. It's equal to DG bison tallow formula for moisturizing.

I have a spreadsheet that I use to track different properties of the soaps which I use, each primary property that matters to me given a possible 10 points, with scent preference a possible 20 and stability a possible 5. These are the marks that this soap gets compared to DG bison tallow, Wholly Kaw DM, and what I use as a baseline, Stirling (not taking preference or value into account):

Stirling: (48/55)
Lathering: 9
Slickness: 8
Cushion: 9
Moisturizing: 9
Residual Slickness: 8
Stability: 5

Declaration Grooming Bison Tallow: (54.5/55)
Lathering: 10
Slickness: 10
Cushion: 10
Moisturizing: 9.5
Residual Slickness: 10
Stability: 5

Wholly Kaw Donkey Milk: (52/55)
Lathering: 9
Slickness: 10
Cushion: 10
Moisturizing: 9
Residual Slickness: 9
Stability: 5

A&E soap base: (53.5/55)
Lathering: 10
Slickness:9.5
Cushion: 10
Moisturizing: 9.5
Residual Slickness: 9.5
Stability: 5

Wow! With your grading system...you really are just splitting hairs! Thanks for the clarification!

I'd be interested to see the weight on those razors as well to see how they compare, for sure!

I found it Josh in Chad's journal at the other site.

Ok Chad, the numbers are in.

The version 1 ATT SE2 head (top cap plus base plate) weighs 50.6g
The version 2 ATT SE2 head weighs 50.0g (deeper cuts for teeth)
The ATT Kronos handle weighs 71.2g
The ATT Colossus handle weighs 85.6g.
All weights are + 0.1g

V.1 SE2 with Kronos handle total 121.8g
V.2 SE2 with Kronos handle total 121.2g
V.1 SE2 with Colossus handle total 136.2g
V.2 SE2 with Colossus handle total 135.6g

So even the RX is a liteweight by about 9g with the Kronos handle. The Colossus handle, forget about it.

It's really a shame that you had to downgrade the shave today. It sounded so promising.

Thanks Eric! The A&E soaps were a very pleasant surprise to see that they lived up to the hype I read.

Thanks Don! I'm an intel analyst by trade, (I deal with all the 1's and 0's, if that tells you anything), so anytime I can break it down to a metrics chart and take out subjectivity is a win.

Great information Walt! So if I'm reading that correctly, the RX weighs less than the ATT by 9g?

A lot of info being shared today in here! Good stuff.

Thanks Chad!

It was still a great shave, even if I missed a spot ATG...anytime there's zero irritation or feedback from the alum or aftershave, it's a good shave!

I hear ya! I was an intel analyst myself. Though you are likely more analytical than I am . I cut my teeth in Military Intel (insert snickering here) as a Human Intelligence Collector.

Thanks for the scent update. I think, however, that for an Aventus type soap, I'll stick with Stirling's Iced Pineapple, and Executive Man.

I have inserted what I found in Chad's journal from that other place below:

@cmh737 here's the info as promised

General
Total weight: 44g
Head weight: 19g

Hawk
Total weight: 36g
Head weight 15g

Difference General overall is roughly 18% heavier and the head is roughly 21% heavier.

Also subjectively speaking the General feels sturdier in the hand.

Both shave well after a few more shaves I'll name my preference but as of right now I'm leaning towards General.

Tell those razors to come back when they grow up, LOL.

The total weight of the RX is 112 g, and the weight of the SE2 with the Kronos handle is 121.8 or 121.2, depending on which version head we are talking about. With version 1 SE2 the RX weighs 9.8 g less with the Kronos, and version 2 weighs 9.2 g less.

CVargo went on to suggest that Dave was compensating for something.

That's perfectly understandable, and honestly, if you're trying to find a match to Aventus, there are better (such as the two mentioned above as well as Fine Platinum) that are better suited.

I'll have to go back and measure the head on both the General and the Timeless, but that's great information...thanks for posting this Walt!!

I don't think there's any need for nuance, gentlemen.

Great couple of reads, reviews, shaves, and pictures Josh!

Thanks Craig!
