The wonderful excesses of acquisition disorders...and wet shaving

Well after the score with Grecian Horse, you might have me interested to try more A&E soaps.

Declaration Grooming Unconditional Surrender | Brass Colonial General | Feather Super Pro (1)
Currently on Shave #498 | Straight shave still at #300

Had a slightly earlier day than usual this morning, but nothing that would necessarily knock me off of schedule. The only difference being the snooze bar got no play this morning. Up on deck for today was Declaration Grooming’s Unconditional Surrender. This is a woody scented soap, with a bit of smoke to it, as many of the Chatillion Lux scents have, and is quite nice. It’s not your sweet woody scent like AOS/Fine sandalwood scents, nor like your typical oud/tonka bean mixes. Definitely not a hot weather scent, and I’ll probably put this up until the fall when the weather turns following this use. Also, I threw in the Feather Super Pro, seeing what kind of shave I can get out of the General with the more aggressive blade.

This is also the first time using a boar brush with a DG soap, and while I wasn’t all that concerned about being able to get a good lather, I was interested in seeing the difference in how that lather developed. I needn’t have worried, as the lather produced was beautiful and very typical of my experiences with the DG soap line. I was slightly worried that the blade being used was a bit too aggressive for me, but again, I was wrong. Three passes and some very light clean-up left me with a BBS+G shave…really surprising considering how much more blade feel I was experiencing. Most likely what was happening is because of the increased blade feel, I was being more conscious of the angle and pressure I was using. The resulting shave was one of the better ones in recent memory. I’m not expecting the longevity to be quite as good as a SR shave, but this will last plenty long enough. The woodiness of the soap seemed to lend itself well with the secondary notes of the Ferragamo Acqua Essenzialle Colonia, which are an unsweet woody accord, so, topped off with that I went out to start the day.

Have a great day everyone!

Great shave, read, and picture Josh!

Looks like another soap for the bucket list.

That soap sounds great too. Maybe you can be my soap sommelier. I'll just send you my money and wonderful soaps can show up once a month!

Like the sound of that soap. AOS Sandalwood is my favorite scent since I started. Nothings dethroned it yet!

Great reads, and a nice breakdown on the soap reviews. I have placed post-shave feel as the biggest deciding factor on my favorite soaps, so if the A&E is below Declaration, it may be a back burner item for me. Of course, there is still something to be said for amazing scents, which is why The Holy Black stays high on my list,

Thanks Craig!! It's a good one for sure.

LOL...I'll not say no to you sending money to me.

Thanks Chris! I love the AOS/Fine sandalwood scent, and it too is my favorite of the sandalwood scents. This is quite different, however, without any of the sweetness.

Thanks Jim...and honestly, the A&E soaps are just short of Declaration as far as post shave moisturizing is concerned, but are better than WK Donkey Milk. I've yet to try WWSW soaps and experience their post-shave, but the baseline soap I use for great moisturizing is Stirling, and all three of these (WK, A&E, DG) are much better in that category.

Great shave and pic.

Thanks Doug!

I have this scent and love it, but couldn't even dream of describing it like you did. Great review

Nice shave and a good read.

I traded my brass Colonial General for a straight razor. I still have the aluminum head, though. Maybe I'll pull it out one of these days and give it a go.

Thank you Randall! I'm really liking the General so far!

I keep thinking about how many donkeys it must take to have a proper dairy. Looks like a lot of work!
