The wonderful excesses of acquisition disorders...and wet shaving

Excellent Mail Call. That is great looking Straight! Glad you finally cracked the code on MW. I find that MW soaps require more water than less and when dialed in is one of the slickest soaps out there. Keep safe my friend!

Thanks Don! Yeah, not sure what the issue(s) were before, but I imagine it was a lack of product + lack of water + not enough whipping. I'm glad I did get it to perform, however.

Nice mail call, that’s a solid looking hunk of steel! Great feedback on the MW. Coconut and Sandalwood sounds like an interesting combo!

Thank you Chris! From a scent perspective, it's a wonderful scent profile that Michelle has created...not having tried any other scents aside from Barbershop, I feel confident in saying it's a top scent! (maybe a stretch!)

That razor is gorgeous!

Thanks Brad!

Great shave. Congrats on dialing in the MW. Beautiful razor. That is one of my wishlist razors.

Thank you Doug! I've been wanting one of these for a while now, so when the opportunity came up to get one in great condition, I jumped, finally.

Chiseled Face Groomatorium Ghost Town Barber | Feather SS Kamisori | Feather Pro-Guard (1)
Currently on Shave #503 | Straight shave #301

Well, time to break out the Feather SS Kami today! I picked this up off of the BST here from Chris H., as I’ve been wanting to get my hands on one of these. After the shave today, I can see why these are favorites of quite a few people. I loaded up a Pro-Guard blade, not wanting to get too cocky with the Super or even the Pro. I was very cognizant of my pressure and angles, and did a full three passes. I have to admit that I did break out the ‘Jectah for my problem areas on the ATG pass, as it was a little awkward trying to get to them with this (or any straight for that matter). The result was, 45 minutes later, a BBS-, as there was one pin prick of red and a little feedback from the alum and aftershave. The Pro-Guard was a good call, as I think the other two blades would have been a tad on the harsh/aggressive side for me at this point. I will say that the first two passes were some of the most enjoyable straight passes that I’ve had in a long time. Everything hit perfectly…angle, pressure…the razor was just skating along. I’ll do one more shave with this before getting back into the normal rotation of straights.

As for the software…Ghost Town Barber. Nuff said….though after using all the bison/donkey/goat milk formulas recently, it was a little more on the airy side than the lathers I’ve become used to. But it still gave great protection, slickness and residual.

M
ail Call!

Two packages today, both filled with pure goodness. First, from Maggards, a tube of Proraso Single Blade Azure Lime cream that I’m going to be splitting with Sterling (Beowolf on here), and two tubs of Oleo Soap Works; Melonade and Rougere. GearNoir (Chris) nailed the description when he called it a watermelon Jolly Rancher…it smells amazing. It’s pretty strong out of the tub as well, so his sample might have lost a bit of scent. The other one is Rougere, which is a rose scented fougere scent, and it’s another one that just smells amazing. It’s got the earthiness of a typical fougere along with the light rose scent.

The second package was from Jim (Wildwest74). He was gracious enough to purchase a tub of the Lavender Creeper from THB for me, and it came in today! Again, this smells absolutely amazing…I might have to do a lavender week here soon! I can’t wait to break this out for a shave!

Have a great day everyone!

Sounds like a plan TJ...I'll let you know after a few years of shaving with it if it's the right razor for me.

No shave today! (much to my dismay…so many soaps to use!)

Having moved to shaving every other day, I’ve found a couple of benefits. I get better, closer shaves when I do this, with much less irritation. Also, what irritation does occur has time to heal, so when I go to shave, I’m not compounding the issue. Of course, I’m not getting that daily spa time, which is always nice, and I’m not working through the soaps as fast as I would like to.

The shave yesterday with the SS didn’t have the longevity of a true straight, nor the safety razors which I have been using lately (the Timeless Bronze and General Brass). I was a little befuddled about that at first, but quickly realized that probably had more to do with my unfamiliarity with A) the razor itself and B) a Kamisori style razor. I’m going to use the SS for one more shave before putting it up for a few days. I’m hankering to use the Friodur I just got in the mail the other day. But I do need to get used to shaving with a Kami because I have a new toy coming in the mail…here’s a little tease…

Speaking of mail, a couple of packages again today. First up was a box from Stirling. I was holding off on this order for a couple of reasons. One, I was waiting for them to release the Varen scent, which is going to be their take on a fougere. Two, I didn’t want to order this soap if they were going to be releasing a glacial version of it, as they did last year. Three, they will be releasing a new line of deodorants and EdT’s and I kind of wanted to combine everything into one order. I shot a message to Rod and Mandy asking about when some of these would be released and found out that the deodorants had been pushed back due to test batch issues without a firm release date, Varen would be released in June, and there would be no glacial Iced Pineapple this year due to issues they had on the farm where some local wild dogs actually attacked and killed some of their sheep. Resultantly, they fell pretty far behind where they wanted to be on development and orders dealing with all of that. So, I went ahead and placed my order, it arriving today. Stirling Iced Pineapple soap, aftershave, and bath soap, along with some body butter. They also sent along the latest test batch of deodorant in the Coconut Lime scent…I’m going to give this a run and see how it does.

On the non-shaving front, I was intrigued by the nib post in the “Other Interests” section. I did need a new pen for all of the meetings I have out here, and wanted to get into the fountain pen game as well. One of the things I’m going to be working on is to be better at classic correspondence with my family back home. (I’m notoriously bad at it…at least from the letter writing standpoint) So I got some decent stationary (faux parchment), matching envelopes, and will be practicing on my penmanship. I ended up with a couple of Lamy pens…one, a rollerball Safari in charcoal coloration. The second is an All-Star, medium nib fountain pen. I didn’t want to get into having to buy different nibs, reservoirs, inkwells, etc…so went with a decent cartridge pen. I bought a few refills for the fountain and one for the rollerball, which should hold me over for a while. They are both very comfortable in the hand…looking forward to trying them out!

Have a great day everyone!

Josh, I've been reading your journal here and there, and enjoying your photos of your gear. Have you ever posted a photo of all of your stuff grouped together? It would be impressive.

I was wondering, what does Stirling's Pig Trail smell like? It does not bring to my mind anything pleasant. ?

Pig trail is the exact same scent as Ozark, which is a very pine-centric scent. If you've smelled their Christmas Eve scent, it's similar without the nutmeg and cinnamon.

I haven't posted a photo yet of everything, but, I could probably do that pretty easily as it's all consolidated into a small area in the room.

All caught up, Josh. Some excellent mail calls. That Friodur looks amazing! And gotta dig Stirling!!

And did someone say, "fountain pens"? Yes, please! You think you've been down a rabbit hole before? Insert Beavis & Butthead laugh here!!!!!!!!

Thanks Chris! I'm not anticipating falling down that rabbit hole, but there's no telling. I do know that I'm sticking with cartridge fountain pens for the time being.

nice mail, call, and Lamy's

Thank you Dave!
