The Wild West Show - Jim's Shaving Journal

That was some review! Sounds like a very cool presentation that's well worth it if the scents are in your wheelhouse.

Now, is the "s" in snurdle silent?

Thanks Dave! I have no shame in saying this was well worth it. And like I said, I don't think I will ever he able to use it all up, at least not for several years.

Great review Jim!

Thanks Tim!

I'm glad it was all you wanted Jim !!

Thanks Dave! All that I wanted and more.

Nice review Jim I ma looking forward to trying the monster

Thanks Dave! Mr Hyde is definitely a beast. I actually reread the story today, and the scents I could still smell added so much to the experience. Having one of the letters from the story makes the total presentation even more impressive. They really nailed all the details.

Today’s Shave: “Tessie“
Brush: Raven Brush Works “Willow Wolf”
Soap: Wild West Shaving Co. Van Helsing – Patchouli, Leather, Black Currant, Wood, Smoke
Razor: Doc Holliday – Asylum RX SE (Feather Pro Guard blade)
Fragrance: Wild West Shaving Co. Van Helsing EdP

Since I am on a seasonal scent kick, I decided to shave a little sooner after my last shave so I could take WWSC’s new scent for a spin. Van Helsing is definitely fitting for WWSC as a seasonal scent, especially when you envision a younger Van Helsing ranging through the wilderness in search of evil entities that need to be eradicated.

As far as the soap itself, there are no surprises. WWSC is, hands down, my favorite soap base, and this performs as expected. I used a fresh blade and I also skimped on the water in the lather, so this shave was a little more rough than I normally have. But I ended up with a solid BBS despite the weepers. Even after a rougher shave the lather acts as a soothing and nourishing post-shave.

This scent is very much on brand for WWSC. The strength of scent for this particular release is 3/5 on the puck, and it blooms to 4/5 as you lather. The leather is the prominent note in the soap lather, with the patchouli and black current playing underneath to give it a teasing sweetness. The wood and smoke are there, and they come forward a little during the shave, but they are definitely more subtle. When you spray on the EdP, however, Van Helsing flips you on your head. The smoke and wood jump forward, with the black currant and patchouli close behind. The leather plays a support role in the fragrance, and starts to shine a little more during dry down. I really appreciate how Russell’s spray EdPs give each fragrance a different complexity than you get just from the soap. They are not carbon copies of the soap scent, and that is a good thing. All the notes are still there, just in a slightly different arrangement.

As a Wild West scent, this one jumps to my top 5 from Russell. This is a group that includes James & Artemus, Irish Brigade, Annie Oakley, and Black Gold.

On the home front I am looking forward to getting the chance to see the new Halloween movie with the boys. We all love the original, and cannot wait to see what is in store. Also, there is only one more week until the release of Red Dead Redemption 2. The fact that I usually peruse the forum at work will be the only thing keeping me from disappearing completely for weeks following the launch.

Oh, and congrats to my Boston Red Sox for winning the American League Pennant. On to the World Series!

Today’s song was the anthem for the 2004 Sox when they broke the Curse, and still gets me fired up when the Sox are chasing that title:

You guys and your crazy leather scents...

. Really though...the sent sounds like a winner. I have a sample of a WWSC soap around here somewhere...I need to pull it out and actually decide if I want to pull the trigger on some this soap.

Yeah, me too. Love this season! And some great scents coming out of it this year.

A couple of those are ones I was considering. If I like the soap I'll probably pick up Irish Brigade and Annie Oakley.

Irish Brigade is one of the best green scents I have ever come across, and that's no lie. It smells like I am standing in a misty field of lush greenery, but not like I just mowed the grass, lol!

WWSC is some good stuff. I was looking around on the site the other day. There are like 3 or 4 scents that newer than the last time I checked. I am going to have to consider an order soon.

Good shave today Jim! Looks like Van Helsing was successful against the Stubble Beast.

A couple of excellent reviews, Jim. I'm almost sorry I passed on Jekyll & Hyde.

I know I have been scarce for awhile. Honestly, it comes down to my free time being dominated by the new game, Red Dead Redemption 2. I am completely in awe of how immersive the game is, allowing me to lose myself in and Old West Outlaw Fantasy whenever I load up the game. Time not spent on the game is spent on keeping SWMBO happy so I don't get called out for shirking my responsibilites.

To make things tougher, there is even a realistic hair and beard growth system which requires regular shaving and trips to the barber, with pomade and everything! Are you kidding me? Add in a deep clothing customization and I am able to recreate my favorite Western looks, like the venerable John Henry "Doc" Holliday in Tombstone:

On the shaving front, I have had my last few shaves with the new CK-6 base from Phoenix Shaving in one of my favorite scents, Dapper Doc's Lilac and Fig.

Never fear, my shaving cadre, I am still here, just spending a lot of time in the digital version of 1899 America, and looking good doing it!

That. Is. AWESOME!

I'm really wanting to get this game, but I made the mistake of putting it on my wishlist for my birthday. Which means it's close enough to Christmas that I can't just go buy it and take it off, because someone might have already bought it for then. Come January, it's mine either way!

Sounds like a ton of fun at the West house! Game looks pretty sweet. Wish I had a console to run it!

Sounds like an interesting game. I’m not a gamer, and that genre doesn’t interest me. But if the theme was good (star wars maybe) I might try it.

It’s a shame the Star Wars game franchise has flopped so many times. The newer Battlefront ones are alright. The last good one was X-Wing vs TIE Fighter from the late 90s lol.
