The Heysi Missive

Over the weekend I experimented with my lather and the exhaust fan and sure enough....with the fan on...terrible, weak lather. No fan....fabulous lather. So the fan switch will not be in use ever again.
Yep, I have exactly the same situation. I run the fan during the shower to help keep the mirror clear, but turn it off when I get out. I shave in silence, but the fan totally messed with the speed of lathering, and the quality. Silence is a big part of the process for me.

The unpacking continues!!! This past week has been a much better one as far as the house goes. When we first moved in, we focused on getting the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen into a state of at least functioning. Followed closely by the living room (gotta have tv). After that I had to go through my best friend's stuff and sort and disperse it all. Dealing with the aftermath of someone else's life is not a fun task. Except for a few furniture items, he's all squared away.

So this past week I've been going through the kitchen and reorganizing and finally getting everything set up for how the kitchen is currently configured. That only took two evenings and along the way, I was able to sketch out some plans for the kitchen/bar remodel. My wife went to interior design school and this is her thing....and she's seems genuinely happy to be researching counters and appliances and paint samples. You know what they say, Happy wife, happy life.

But while she plans away and goes down design rabbit holes, I've moved on to the dining room and living room. Again, only a few days and those seem to be much closer to how we'd like them to look.....minus new flooring and paint. This weekend I plan on attacking the room I'm calling the craftroom. I have to move every piece of furniture that is in that room since the wife wants everything on a different wall than it currently is (I knew I should have asked her before I put anything in there). But after that, I just need to put up a few shelves and that room will be functionally done.

Shave journal:
After finally solving my vent fan issue, I've been back to enjoying my morning shaves. The shave den has been almost completely put out and except for some minor storage deficiencies, I'm happy with where everything is. Of course I know that the den will evolve over time but as of right now....I'm happy with it.

Finally got my two pucks of tallow MWF after originally getting two of the palm oil version (that seller went and ghosted everyone....boo on them). But I also picked up a pair of pucks from Kent as I've heard that it's the same soap as the tallow MWF. 4 new tallow pucks and 2 palm oil pucks to go with the 1 and a half pucks I'm presently using......with the way I use soap....that should last me for some time (I still have 13 pucks of Williams from that discontinuation......shaving soap people need to stop discontinuing things...it's very inconvenient for this small but persnickity group that we belong to).

Yes, it's here....another friday (all hail @GearNoir and his friday declarations/celebrations). Going to get my haircut this evening. Ryan (the very cool dude that cuts my hair) has started a new feature of the actual haircut.....he offers me a beer before we get started!!! How cool is that? The shop is near downtown, adjacent to the new Brewery District (for those of you that came to the first TSC con in vegas.....where we had BBQ on the first day was the middle of the Brewery District). I'm hoping that the wife will want to stay down there for dinner after my haircut and I can enjoy a few tasty brews. It's taken a few years (decades) but Vegas is starting to become an actual place to live.

Plus....have you seen our newest attraction here in town?

It's an 18,000 seat concert hall on the inside (U2 is starting a residency there in a few months) but on the outside, the entire building is a huge LED screen. And in the past few days they fired up the screen and it has amazed everyone in the valley. Now there's traffic issues in front of the building as people are stopping to film instagram and tic tok videos. Plus the surrounding hotels are starting to get complaints from people in the hotel rooms facing the Sphere.......turns out that a screen that bright, running 24 hours a day, is a bit much for the people trying to sleep nearby. So all the casinos are adding blackout curtains to all the rooms facing the Sphere. Ah....Vegas.

The wife and I just got our plane tickets to go to our daughter's college graduation. In december!! Kinda worried that there may be snow (it's in Memphis, Tennesse). We'll see.

The wife approved my idea for the bar at the house. I've been wanting to get a gym locker unit to put baseball jerseys and hats and baseball t-shirts in so that when I get home each night, I can change into something more relaxing than my dress shirt I wear for work. I mentioned it last night and she said that "would look really cool in the bar....you should buy it". So I'm off to amazon and ebay to see what I can find. I plan to just hang out in my bar for the rest of my life.....invites will be sent to the most worthy.

And yesterday I was out back cleaning up a bit of yard debris around my lemon tree.....I was able to harvest about 50 lemons off the tree in late may and early june (fresh lemonade is the BEST!!) and I happened to look up into the tree and noticed another 50 or so tiny little lemons on the tree right now!!! I'm going to have fresh lemonade in august and september!! It's safe to say that we're really loving the new house.

Shave Journal:

Not much has changed in the past few weeks. Still using the unending Williams puck. The Wilkinson Sword blade is somewhere around 60+ shaves (it was the blade I was using when KJ started the Williams 100 Shave challenge) and I lost count on the wilki when we moved. The '47 Aristocrat is getting daily use and hasn't let me down once. I have been switching between the Nivea 2:1 and the CBL Hombres tonic....depending on which lovely scent I want to enjoy for the day. But sometimes, same old same old is just fine for me. The weekend is when I pull out the fun stuff and mix it up a bit.

That’s amazing. Fun project!

What a nice, relaxing weekend. Had friends in town that were going to a concert here in Vegas so we had a Staycation downtown and had a blast. It's important to play tourist in your own town every once and a while....and that's what we did. We stayed at the 4 Queens (home of the first TSC convention) and I'm almost certain that we had the room that @NurseDave and @Majorrich had during the con. I woke up one night and thought I saw Rich sitting in the corner watching us sleep......or maybe I was seeing things. Had a bunch of great meals and tried a few great beers......and the wife got to play a bit of slots.......so a victory for everyone.

It was 118 F on sunday and that was at the airport (where no one lives) so at my house it was 121 F. In the 20 years I've lived here I've gotten used to the heat but that's just a bit too much. I stayed inside and enjoyed the AC.

Paid my daughter's college tuition for the remainder of her degree. That includes the Bachelor's degree and the teaching credentials classes she'll take starting in december. I wasn't able to pay for all 4 years of her degree....but I paid for the some of it and that's what a dad wants to do.

Shave Journal:

My shave den is now the best smelling room in the house. With the increased temps and the central air combined with the smaller size of the house, my soaps and aftershaves now waft through the house and make everything smell better. But in the den.....it's heavenly.

So.....I'm not sure if everyone knows....but last night I was the guest on the Drinks & Dave's show on YouTube (please go and subscribe to their channel....if you haven't already).

(Not a great screen capture of me....thanks YouTube!......and I'm guessing that the title reads from the bottom to the top.....clever one, Dave)

It was a lot of fun and I hope I only looked like a goofball for about half of it...the other half, I was going for informed and knowledgeable.....I probably missed the mark by a bit. It's funny that I was asked to be on to talk about an app that helps out people in your neighborhood....but we ended up talking about F1 and where to go for good food in Las Vegas.....such is the nature of the Drinks & Dave's show.....it's freeform and relaxed and crosses a wide range of topics.....much like this site does (again....if you haven't already...go and subscribe). Well, I hope that I get a chance to be back on again in the future.....if only so I can finish talking about how my bar will look when its finished. Thanks to @BarberDave and @NurseDave for having me on......it was a blast!

The wife's birthday weekend was a success. Took her to see Barry Manilow (she's a Fanilow) and she had a great time. As someone that was not a fan of his style of music....I didn't have an awful time. The wife was in heaven. Also got her a few gifts that she set aside but her favorite was a glass block that we can put all of our cruise passes in that we've collected over the years of sailing aboard Royal Caribbean. She seemed to like that one best. Now if only I could find the box I put all the past cruise passes into....she could fill up the glass block (have I mentioned lately how much moving sucks?)

Had to go on a journey of phones and computers and texts but I finally got my daughters final college tuition paid. You would think that paying with my credit card would be simple, easy-peasy......click, click, paid.....but no!!! They have to tack on a $100 fee that at this point is not much of an expense for the convenience (of which the level of convenience was almost non existent).....but by that time I'd been on an extended tour of how unfriendly the payment system is at a college financial services department and I wasn't about to give them $100 for pissing me off and wasting half my morning. So I had to go old school and write a check (took me longer to find the check book than I care to admit)....but at least the BA in teaching with a minor in History is secured. Paid for half of her wedding....paid for half of her degree....all that's left is to pay for spoiled grandkids. Someday.

Shave Journal:

Decided to switch it up this week. So I'm using my Franken-Tech and I'm using the CBL Oud Mineral soap. Such a great scent. I was reluctant to put on aftershave for fear of muting the soap scent....but my fears have not come to fruition. The Oud is still there....plenty of Oud to go around. I may have to listen to the @NurseDave guy and look into the Oud cologne.
