The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man

As you can see, I rarely update my Journal. So If I'm doing it now, it must be for a good reason.

First of all, many people have been noticing that my hair has been getting quite faded, and keep asking about my coloring and what I'm going to do with it (@NurseDave @BarberDave ). Then @Majorrich mentioned on the Zoom call last week that he thought it'd be cool if it was bleach white and spiked up. So, Wednesday Amber bleached my hair in prep for the next dye job, and I left it like that for the Zoom call for rich to see. Then Last night we dyed it and did something very different, but something I've been talking about for a while. 2 colors, split right down the middle, so it basically looks like one color on one side, and one color on the other side. I think it turned out amazing. Really hoping these colors don't fade as fast as some of the other ones we've used. Pics below.

Now on to the important stuff.

As many of you know, I had thyroid cancer and had to have a Total Thyroidectomy about a year and a half ago. One of the followup treatments is Radioactive Iodine (RAI), but at the time my doctor (Endocrinologist) did not want me to do it because I wasn't in a high risk for the cancer to come back and all my levels looked good, and they try to not have people do it unless they have to, because it's quite invasive. I did have a tiny residual piece of thyroid tissue that was left behind, and my doc said even the best surgeons can't get 100% of the tissue out.

Well, nothing has changed, but now my doctor is of the opinion that I should do the RAI treatment, because that will completely kill off that last bit of thyroid tissue and prevent it from growing back in the future. A better safe than sorry approach, I guess. So the process goes like this.

Today: I start a low iodine diet, for the next 12 days. The iodine is absorbed and processed by the thyroid, so to start the process you want to starve the thyroid of iodine and make it hungry for it. That part about this that sucks for me is that on my keto diet, much of what I eat on a daily basis is on the "do not eat" list. Things like Egg yolks, bacon, butter, broccoli, cured meats & all dairy. That's like 90% of my diet right there. So this is going to suck for a while. I can stay low carb, but staying keto is going to be a challenge.

Monday: I go in to get a Thyrogen shot, which allows you to keep taking your thyroid hormone replacement medication (levothyroxine) before, during and after treatment, thus avoiding symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Tuesday: A second Thyrogen shot

Wednesday: I get my RAI. Which is just a pill. That contains I-131, a radioactive form of iodine. Now, since my thyroid has been starved of iodine, it will want to gobble this new influx of iodine up right away, concentrating the radioactivity in the residual thyroid tissue, and killing it. At this point, I will be mildly radioactive, but it can be concentrated in bodily fluids like sweat, blood, saliva, urine, etc.... So I am basically now double quarantined. I cannot touch anyone for 7 days, and cannot be within 6 ft of anyone under 16yrs old for 7 days. There's a whole lot more to it, but basically anything I touch needs to be washed before anyone else can touch it. Side effects form the RAI can include: nausea, swelling/pain in the neck where thyroid cells remain, dry mouth, temporary loss of smell and/or taste. So, the next Zoom call, could be interesting!

The following Wednesday, I go back to the hospital for a full body scan, where they will search to make sure there are no residual cells in my system. After that, I can go back to my normal diet.

The biggest question in all of this, and if you've read this far I'm sure you've though about it as well........ Will this treatment give me [even more] Super Powers??? My Spidey Senses are tingling!

Well sucks you have to deal with that, but the science behind it is pretty interesting. I guess you can fill up on celery for the week?

Sorry to hear brother, prayers your way and the good side the hair looks awesome!

Didn't know about your thyroid, KJ. I assume you'll be on synthroid if you're not already on your daily dose of it. My wife has been on it since before we met.
...At this point, I will be mildly radioactive...
I thought you already were? :ROFLMAO:

Dang KJ. I wish you all the luck in the world it goes well.

Also, the two tone color in the Mohawk looks rad!

It sounds as though this is the smart thing to do, KJ. Preventive treatment can buy you some peace of mind. And YES, surely you will gain superpowers, maybe xray or laser vision would be my guess, given the thyroid's proximity to the eyes.

I think it's near impossible to fill up on celery.....
and the good side the hair looks awesome!
Thanks!

Been on levothyroxine daily ever since my surgery. one pill a day for the rest of my life.

Thanks!

Sweet! I hope so.

Your hair looks amazing! I love it.

Good luck with the RAI treatment. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. You can definitely handle two weeks with no Keto, but I bet that first bite of bacon after the whole treatment is done will be the best thing ever. I don't suggest watching Chernobyl while you are undergoing this process.

Thanks guys!

I did find a little bit of hope in the diet thing. I found a Low Iodine Diet (LID) group on Facebook and they have a list of approved foods and brands. Doctors tell you no bacon, for example, because they aren't going to go through the trouble of finding out which brands use iodized or non-iodized salt. But this group does exactly that. Any product that uses non-iodized salt is fair game (barring any other non-approved ingredients). So I actually do have a few more meat, snack, and condiment options that will make it a lot easier.

I'm sorry to hear that you have to go through this. My grandmother had thyroid cancer and had to go through the same things... I wish you all the best in the world my friend and for a complete recovery from this.
