Steve's Journal: The Saga Continues....

Good stuff! It’s great when a bit of gear is versatile and can be paired with anything else you select for the day!

The 4th shave with the Parker blade was noticeably lower in quality. Not to the point where it was a catastrophe, but it was certainly less comfortable. This could be due to blade life.....or because I was in a hurry and rushed through my shave a bit! Either way, I tossed the blade after that shave and moved on. The quality was still decent close and comfort wise, but noticeably not as good as the first 3 shaves.

I then decided to shake things up a bit. Last night I decided to pull out the Fatip Grande and load a Gillette SB to see how that combo went. I stuck with the same set up otherwise: Stirling Kong synthetic, Stirling Sandalwood soap. This Stirling soap sample still does not show any signs of dying. I must be close to my 20th shave at this point. Pretty impressive.

I went with with my usual 3 pass routine. WTG, XTG, ATG. It didn’t go as expected lol. Maybe it’s because the blade/razor combo isn’t the best for me, or maybe it’s just because I havent used the Fatip in over a month. I ended Up with a ton of weepers under my chin and one on my cheek. But I also got the closest shave I’ve had in a while. The weepers all closed up easily on their own and this morning there are no signs of any damage. I’ll have to see what a second shave brings, and I’ll make sure to take some extra time to re-adjust to the Fatip.

Nice close shave Steve...maybe a bit too close for comfort! Hopefully the blade smooths out over the next shave or two to provide a better, more comfortable shave.

Good job pulling a decent shave out of the chaos Steve.

The Fatips do take some respect and attention! Sounds like you may need to ride the cap more.

Bummer about the sub par results, but close is good, just have to figure out the other issues!

Well I guess this is better late than never, but hello! Glad to have you on board here. Real estate is quite a crazy industry. Good luck with the closings and deals.

Hey everyone! Long time since my last check in, been really busy!

So I went and did the unthinkable, and at my wife's request I switched back to a cartridge razor for a few shaves. I had been experimenting with a few of the blades I've received from some of you guys, and had a run of bad luck....which turned into a lot of bad shaves lol. So my wife said why don't you just try a cartridge again and see how it goes.

After 3 shaves with the cartridge (and a return to my trusty Stirling DE loaded with a Vokhsod) I have concluded that I actually more visual irritation from a cartidge (bumps mostly, with a little redness) but more physical irritation (actual pain or discomfort) from a DE.

Today was my first shave going back to the DE, and I actually had a very good shave. Very little irritation, visually or physically, and it is just a little bit closer in my problem areas than the cartridge was able to give me.

My conclusion: As long as I stick to blade and razor combos that work for me, DE is the way to go. I just need to resist the urge to switch things up in that arena, which shouldn't be too hard. Blades aren't as intriguing to me as soaps, AS, brushes, etc.

Hope everyone is doing well, when I get a few extra minutes here and there I have been trying to catch up on journals. It's tough sometimes though haha!

very similar to my conclusion as well. My tolerance for DE blades is really narrow.

What DE are you using? Maybe you need something with less aggression?

I mainly use a discontinued Stirling Soap Co. DE6P3 closed comb, but I also use a Fatip Grande open comb occasionally. I've gotten good results from both with the right blade, but I've also had some really bad results as well.

I do also have a RR Tech II, but I don't use it as often. The few times I have used it have been fairly good, although the time I put a Feather blade in it still gives me nightmares....

So glad you cartridge experiment failed!

Just kidding. Great check in! Hope things continue to go well for you in general.

Well, I’m unfamiliar with any of those, I don’t really do modern razors. So I’m not sure where they are on the aggression scale.

I have superb results with my Merkur 34C (1 of 2 modern DEs). It doesn’t really matter what blade is in it.

Seems like The Tech 2 should be fairly mild though.

Could also be your angle. Try riding the cap against your face as much as possible, that will shallow the razor blade to your face.

The only modern razor I have tried is the Maggard Razor MR7 and MR11. Both have the same head and are a great shave with an Astra SP or Voskhod. You might check out a Gillette Tech or TTO, same great shave with those blades.

As mentioned, riding the cap should help minimize damage too.
