Slants

First post, old shaver...

I recently received this slant Bakelite razor in what appears to be a matching Bakelite box. It’s pretty distinctive, but I just cannot place it, or find it in the compendium.

Do any of you recognize it?View attachment 27494View attachment 27495View attachment 27496
Okay, got an answer for you, kind of. The razor is a Hobby (or one of the similar razors of the time). In the old days of bakelite razors, it was not unusual for one razor design to be branded by several different companies. this is what my friend showed to me as a Hobby:

Definite resemblance in the head, but different handle. Sorry I don't have more info, and good luck doing a google search on "vintage hobby bakelite razor" since yo will find a million hits on collecting vintage bakelite razors as a hobby.

I took another careful study of this today, and I approached the razor in a more thoughtful manner. I used a Thai Gillette super stainless blade, which was more bendable than the other ones I was using. Then I carefully looked at the razor and I determined that the two large bosses on the end are for you to use your fingers to pinch and help thread the handle onto the head, and screw it down firmly.

I maintained a light touch and only did it two pass. And I got an amazingly good shave. It’s mind over matter with this one I think.

Second time I am posting a non slanted razor in this slant section, and again because it is a non slanted version of a well known slant (I think). This one came to me from our good friend @Techichi. I saw this listed on his eBay store a couple of months ago and told him to hold it for me and I will settle later. I then had a bunch of things come up (like the virus and all that stuff) and forgot about it until I saw it listed again on his eBay store. This time I actually remembered to get it. I don't know who makes this as it is not marked. I have a Lutz and that razor is also unmarked and so who knows how that goes. I know the Lutz was produced under different labels and I know mine is the Lutz version because it was NOS with the cardboard box. The Lutz is one of those slants with a differential side, with one side being more aggressive than the other. The Ikon X3 was a clone of it, except the two sided did not have much difference in aggression. The Lutz was more of a Jekyll and Hyde type thing with one side being very aggressive and the other side mild. Because I am caught up in the Stirling razors pass around right now, I won't do a comparison with the slanted and non slanted razors for a couple of days.

Here's one for you Les 🤪

I been looking at that for a couple of years now. I bought from the seller before, and I know he will discount the price for me, but even then it would be more than a car payment and with all the missing car payments for razor purchases in the past, maybe the repo folks will come calling.

I have no car payment and I wouldn't do it (y)

Credit where credit is due. I have to thank @gvw755 for inspiring me to take the plunge into the world of slants through this thread.

I purchased a RR Wonderbar from Italian Barber and used it today for the first time. I had a very nice shave which turned out to be very close to BBS. My touchstone for a good razor is one that glides and cuts without irritation on that critical against the grain pass (3rd pass) in the neck area near the Adams Apple. The Wonderbar passed with flying colors. Of course, I loaded the dice a bit by not shaving yesterday, by using Grooming Dept Pre-Shave and by using the very slick Grooming Dept Lusso base. The blade of choice was a second-use Rapira Platinum Lux.

The razor head aesthetically looks like someone got inspiration from a fun house mirror. I half expected Laffing Sal from Playland at the Beach in San Francisco to make an appearance along with the Grateful Dead (who played there in the Summer of 1969 at a Family Dog concert). 1593963064094.png

The razor head does look very well-machined. In combination with the Ti halo handle that I chose, it is a good looking piece of kit. I am pleased to have it in my razor collection.

Great choice. (y)

I don't know what it is with Razorock, however he has a tendency to make extremely smooth shaving stainless steel razors. His Wunderbar, GC, and Mamba are all what I call phantom shavers as you cannot feel a blade when you shave, but after two passes yo have a BBS. That Wunderbar is one of my few razors where I can consistently get a one pass near BBS.

Now if we can only get @Dave in KY (Mr. I don't have car payments) to spring for a Wunderbar. ;)

Sadly, in order to save a mere 40 simoleons @Dave in KY got one with a homely handle, functional I am sure but homely nonetheless.😷

I have the impression that the Wonderbar is actually smoother than the Game Changer .84-P but that impression is based on one shave only. I also think it may be more efficient.

What Glenn fails to realize is how much rarer the Barber Pole handle is.......I could trade for 2 like his if I wanted to....... I don't 😜😎
