Slants

Okay, now that my "death trap on a handle" is on it's way to @Keto and I found out that @Dave in KY finally got a Wunderbar, I can devote my days to doing nothing important once again. After receiving the non slanted Lutz from @Techichi, I decided to spend last night and tonight comparing both razors. First of all, both razors have differential sides with one side having scallops closer together than the other side. Getting real anal like some of the folks on that other shaving forum that shall remain nameless, I even counted the bumps and they are the same number on the non slant and slant guard. The cap and base plates are the same geometrically, with the only difference being that one is torqued and the other is straight.

In the first two pics, the slant version is the lower razor, and in the last pic, the slant is on the right side.

Although there are no instructions or any markings on the base plate, I found through experience that the side with less bumps on the guard is the more aggressive side.

Last night I started my shave using the non slanted razor. I started WTG using the side with less bumps. After one stroke, I had to look to see if maybe I had picked up the Stirling HA by mistake. There was significant blade feel, and even by adjusting the angle, there was still blade feel. the difference between this razor and the HA was that after the first pass, most of the whiskers were cleared away (and I didn't lose a layer of skin in the process). ATG was done using the side with more bumps and this became a totally different razor (duh). It was a very comfortable shave, but still very efficient. In the ned I just lathered my jaw line and under my chin, and shaved the left side of my face using the more aggressive side, and the right side using the guard with more bumps. I was surprised that with less whiskers, the aggressive side just became very efficient and with almost n blade feel. The Right side of my face just shaved efficiently.

To be honest, this is what I remembered the Lutz slant to be like.

Okay, so tonight I shaved with the Lutz slant. Again, I started WTG with the guard that had less bumps. What was surprising was that even though there was blade feel, it was not as extreme as the non slanted Lutz. the slant had a way of mellowing out the blade feel. I also found out after the WTG pass that the slant also was more efficient a shaver. I ended up with a one pass near BBS. I continued with my ATG pass suing the side with more bumps and again, it was much more efficient than the non slant version. Doing my XTG pass on my jaw line and under my chin just completed a very comfortable BBS. the Lutz have been forgotten for a while, and it was good that I had this opportunity to remember what a great shaver it is. I'm on my first slant, a Wunderbar, but that sounds like a nice efficient shave. I can see why guys like slants.

Most folks testing the water with a slant will go with either a Merkur 37 or a RR 37 (if they really want to get cheap). The Wunderbar is probably the best current production slant you can get and the price reflects that. This is the slant that everyone that likes slants eventually get (like Dave). the fact that you got it from the beginning is great. Your search for the best slant is over. (y)

Of course, if you're someone like me, I continue to get new (and vintage) slants just to see if something else could be better. All in the name of science. ;)

Okay, so this thread has not seen much activity for a while, and partially it is because I have been participating in a bunch of pass arounds for razors. I just finished and sent off the Homelike Taiga and it will be a while before I get the Homelike Colibri (Hummingbird) and so I thought I would finally get around to shaving with my latest slant additions:

From left to right

Hobby (Neon) Bakelite (very similar to @MarkB mystery razor)
Mulcuto Diagonal - all white with metal cap
Ikon B1 DLC clone of the Mulcuto Needlepoint (head only)

Tonight's shave was with the Hobby. @MarkB described his shave as brutal and I will wholeheartedly agree with his assessment. This razor had significant blade feel and I had to go very slow even starting with my WTG pass. ATG pass, I needed to stretch skin and do a lot of tricks in addition to keeping the strokes short, deliberate, and very slow. The advantage was that this had a rather pointed cap and so using that angle provided some efficiency and comfort. The shave kind of reminded me of my shaves with the Stirling HA. I have to say that if the HA was a 10, this razor was a 9. I did not at any point feel like the razor could cause serious damage to my face though (like I did with the HA).

Nice to see you back Les. The Taiga was a winner for me if available to buy without the circus sellout coming up. I bailed on the Hummingbird pass.

Prior to tonight's shave, I noticed that for all the stress that Hobby razor gave me last night, it was very thorough and I had less to shave tonight. So on to tonight's shave. Tonight was my white Mulcuto bakelite with the metal cap. This Mulcuto came in many different varieties:

DSC03378.JPG

The one on the left is the common bakelite version with black cap and handle and a white base plate. The one on the right is the all metal version with the famous "railroad nail" handle, and the one in the middle is a more rare version which was all white with a metal cap. If these look familiar, Ikon razors cloned it with their Shavecraft 102.

This Mulcuto is a diagonal type slant where the head itself is tilted. All you need to do is to keep the handle straight and the head automatically slants. WTG and ATG went very smooth and there was not much touch up left to especially after last night's shave. Everyone needs to get at least one of these versions. (y)

Old School Razor and Brush

Sunday August 9, 2020
Razor: Krect Spiral Slant
Blade: Wizamet with a Shim (4)
Brush: Rubberset 400/Cashmere
Soap: Ethos/CBL Soaps Fresh Lime
Aftershave 1: Humphrey's Alcoholado Maravilla
Aftershave 2: Ethos/CBL Soaps Fresh Lime Skin Food Splash
Fragrance: Aqva Amara

On recommendation of another Krect Owner I added a shim under the blade which widens the gap and also stiffens the hold when the blade is locked in. Smooth shave when you pay attention. There's NO WAY a straight could get a closer shave than this provides when operated as intended. As I sip some coffee and write this my face is still chilled form the some and splash. GREAT shave for sure. Hope all in the Cadre have a great Sunday !!
