Slants

I had to grab one, I've been very patient. LOL

I'm getting a few vintage Ever-Ready brushes revamped, some more Ethos, then the spending has to stop for awhile. :ROFLMAO:

Okay, as I promised @Dave in KY a little over a week ago, this is the latest slant I just received today. It is the Focus Tritok R53. For those that don't know, Focus is an Italian razor maker famous for making the Focus Dynamic, a pivoting head SE razor which used a DE blade snapped in half. This was a razor that folks either loved or hated, and I never got one and so can't say anything about that.

The Tritok is actually a line of three razors all with a very thin cap and thin base plate. I was attracted to the R53 because of the low profile head and thinking that this might be the rebirth of our favorite Krect razor.

The base plate is just barely torqued and it almost takes a magnifying glass to see where it is, however trust me, it is because the base plate is uneven on a flat surface. The razor is made of aluminum and is extremely light. The handle, even though it is smooth, has those bumps in strategic places, which makes it easy to hold, even with wet hands. One problem with the threading of the post is that it stops short of the top and the handle has an unthreaded area to accommodate that. What this means, however, is that unless yo use a thick washer, you cannot add weight to this razor by using a heavier handle.

Shaving with this razor was quite a challenge. It has a set angle defined by the bevel on the cap, however finding that angle with a cap that thin is hard to do especially when you are plowing through lather. The other thing is that lather management is not great because of the thin lather holes and the edge of the cap being so close. WTG pass was a challenge. ATG was surprisingly good as it allowed some feedback to keeping your shave angle. Overall, this was close to a full three pass shave and took a lot of hard work to get that. Surprisingly, the dry touch up worked well with this razor as there was no lather to get in the way of the shave. It was a good thing I used a good performing soap to help.

Okay, after that not so impressive shave with the Tritok on Tuesday, I wondered if I should even go through with my original plan to have a shave off between the Tritok and my Krect Spiral Curve. Well, I already took the pic and had the Krect on deck for last night and so I decided to go for it just to see if there was something about bad about the Krect that I missed all these years.

Nope, never happened! One can see immediately that the head of the Krect showed a similar thin profile, but it was seriously torqued like the best of slant razors. There was no problem in finding the proper angle as the cap was curved and so no need to try to find the bevel on the cap in order to shave through the lather. One thing that I did notice was that there was some lather management problems with the Krect as it shared the same small lather slots combined with a skinny guard.

WTG pass went very well with the only problem being the curve at the chin, but this was something I experienced with the same blade last night using a mild bakelite razor. I could have stopped with my ATG pass because I was already close to a BBS, however I was using @Techichi Hive Brush and a CBL soap and didn't want the lather to go to waste and so I did a partial XTG pass and minimal touch up.

Tonight's shave was like comparing a vintage Porsche 911 with my Subaru Impreza - no comparison.

No more slants for a while as the last two on the horizon were the Fatips and the Focus. Up to you folks now.

@Techichi, I heard you got a new finishing hammer slant razor. This would be a good place for a shave report.(y)

Not surprised the Krect came out on top of that showdown.

I plan on getting a few more shaves in with the hammer before reporting. Trying a few different blades and getting the angle down.

I've been using slants, my Krect (favorite by far) most recently but never post them here as always saw this as your tour of the slant universe @gvw755 Looking forward to Don's thoughts

There is a guy on another forum already selling his Focus slant. He just got it this week and said selling because its too mild.

@gvw755

Hey Les, you have a Ziglar, correct? I searched for the razor on Google and a thread of your's comparing it to a Krect was at the top. Has your opinion changed on it much?

It has been a while since I shaved with my Ziglar. It is an odd razor as it is torqued, but also has a humpback. I got good shaves out of it, but the comb on it was flat and not rounded or curved downward and so if you're not careful, it can scratch you as if it was another cutting edge. If you are a collector, it is a razor you have to get. If yo want to shave with a good slant, thee are others out there.

Double Slant meaning a Double edge slant razor ? What's the Double mean?
Double slant meaning the seller doesn't know what he is talking about. The Fasan razors were called Double Slants (Doppel Schnitt), but that was what they called all their slants. Folks attached the name to the second version which had an elegantly extremely curved OC base plate. All Hoffritz and Coles were basically an older Merkur 37 design without the scalloped cap. There was one very rare version of a Merkur that had an extremely torqued base plate. I am not sure if Hoffritz ever got a version of it to sell.
