Shave #70:

Now that I’ve done a once over of my Grooming Department samples, I’ve put those aside for the time being to go through the hoard of stuff Dave sent me.

Today I chose a soap that interested me out of the box, first sniff, and that was Jeeves of Hudson Street: Turkish Bath.

The soap has a very mellow, warm smell. I get a good underlying hint of spices, but for some reason the overlaying scent is a bit peanut buttery. I like it! The scent mellows our even more as it lathers, becoming very faint. So in essence it becomes just a good, clean shave soap. Being a tallow soap and one produced in the States, it was a very different feel to GD. It was much more reminiscent of my normal rotation of classic European soaps. The lather performance and feel reminded me instantly of La Toja, but just slightly different, likely due to the lack of mineral ingredients. It is a well made soap.

The shave was a 2 pass - I seem to be favoring those since my switch to daily shaves. I also feel that my beard growth and fullness (as full as it can be being of partial Asian descent) has stepped up a notch since, but not enough to warrant 3 passes each day.

So I put the Feather SS in for the XTG and the RR BS in for the hybrid-ATG and clean up. Finished off with my CC Venture sample (I really need to put out for the big bottle of this stuff).

In other news...after my nice shower, shave, and clean up, as I walked out of the bathroom to stow my gear, loving life and smelling great...I was greeted by the pungent smell of dog doo doo. My older dog (~12 yrs) has had intestinal issues the last day and so had the doggie runs. I had let her out before my shave, but apparently she didn’t finish when I thought she had. Kind of a downer, cleaning up liquid dog doo after a nice shave.

Ironic too as I was just pondering the impact of beloved family pets in Dave’s journal!

Ramping up for the weekend today at work. Believe it or not, a lot has to happen at a church in the sense of grounds and buildings in preparation for weekend and Sunday’s events!

Nice shave with the Jeeves, Chris. SWMBO has similar problems with our pooch back home, though not due to old age. He's just stubborn.

What a cruel reward for such a great shave. Hope the pooch is better now.

Great shave. I hope your dog recovers quickly.
Nice read. Hope your pup is feeling better soon.

Thanks guys! She’s a good old dog!

Something for me to look forward to when I get old...someone else cleaning up my mess. ?

Great read and shave Chris!

Bummer about the dog, hope she is better soon!

Much appreciated Craig! I called home on my lunch break, the missus says she seems a little better; at least she hasn’t been pawing to go out all afternoon. She also reports that, thankfully, the house doesn’t reek from this morning’s incident! ?

I wish the Grooming Dept stuff wasn't so hard to get a hold of, there are a couple I'd like to try.

Glad you like the Jeeves, but I could have done without the memory of dealing with dog GI issues! All in good fun, but seriously, better you than me! ?

Great couple of shaves, Chris!

Regarding the lather soak, something that works great for me with Grooming Dept, and with others like Wild West Shaving Co and Phoenix & Beau, is to actually rub that lather into my skin until it disappears. With those soaps in particular, this leaves my skin so smooth and protected that I don't even need to put anything else on as a post-shave. You should try it the next time you use the Grooming Dept.

Try shooting Mohammed an email. He is a really nice guy, very personable in my dealings with him. Maybe he at least work something out with a sample? Who knows?

Good idea. I actually massage my face a bit, but have not taken it that far yet. I’ll try it today with the Sudsy Soapery I’m going to be using!

Shave #71:

I continue to be blown away by the soaps I’ve been graciously gifted. I don’t what else to say, it would be nearly impossible to pick a favorite except by scent, they are all just that good. I am definitely seeing the draw to American artisan soaps. They aren’t necessarily better than EU classics, just top notch in their own way. They do have the luxury of not being locked into an ancient formula though and being able to be pick about their ingredients (and they should be with some of these prices, lol).

Today I tried Sudsy Soapery: Citrus & Bay. After using it, it’s extra descriptors of “super creamy” and “triple butter” are quite accurate. I can only really compare this in scent and performance to one other soap I’ve tried, and that was Tallow & Steel: West Indies. It has a very natural ingredient vibe and packs quite a punch in scent, though West Indies may be a bit more intense. WI was almost obnoxious and overpowering, where as C&B was just the right amount of power for the scent and it toned down a bit with lathering. The soap was very slick, hydrating, and protecting. I was actually able to lay it on rather thick and didn’t have to have a slightly thin lather like I do with some soaps (not bad or good); it was a nice difference.

Another 2 pass today. Finished up with some un-decanted Pinaud original (may just have to go to the dollar store for a glass bottle). Same process as normal with the Feather and RR BS. Today will mark about a week’s use of the RR BS and I’m ready to switch it up again, though it will remain in my den for the time being. It really is a nice razor. The only 2 issues I really have with it are 1) the ease with which the head unscrews and 2) the machining grooves on the underside of the top cap make cleaning more difficult. I think I’m enjoying smooth/mildness so I’ll put the prewar Fat Handled Tech up on deck for tomorrow.

Good shave otherwise BBS most spots with a bit of DFS in my usually trouble areas.

It was nice to start the day out well, as right after I had a long conversation with my dad about things going on with him and my mother (not issues between them, just life issues in general). I haven’t spoken with him that long over the phone 1:1 in a long time, though we do visit as a family every couple months or so. Nothing was resolved, I just listened for the most part. It was good though.

Glad you like the Sudsy Soapery! It's one of my favorite Artisans right now. It's had to believe that soap doesn't have tallow in it.

Nice shave today Chris
Great shave. Sudsy Soapery is definitely a top tier soap producer.
Great review and shave Chris!

Thanks fellas! I may try to get it traded for a sandalwood or minty type soap from S&S, but then something a little different in the wheel house occasionally isn’t a bad thing...
