If you have to do something...

sorry about the substandard shave Chris...you might be onto something about the angle affecting the blade and causing accelerated degradation to the edge.

Perhaps! I guess the next logical question after my testing a new blade, is to see if any similarly curved razors exhibit similar issues.

Shave #69:

Back in business...for now!

Today was the final first trial of my last sample of Grooming Department soaps...if that makes sense?

Grooming Department: Flight

Flight
- Beef tallow. Scent notes: Tomato Leaf, Clary Sage, Linden Blossom, Leather, Oud, Benzoin, Frankincense, Myrrh and Tobacco

Ingredients: Stearic Acid, Water, Beef Tallow, Kokum Butter, Potassium Hydroxide, Castor Oil, Shea Butter, Cupuacu Butter, Glycerin, Goat Milk, Sucrose Cocoate, Fragrance, Safflower Oil, Jojoba Oil, Meadowfoam Oil, Babassu Oil, Abyssinian Oil, Pomegranate Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Carnauba Wax, Hydrolyzed Oat Protein, Acacia Senegal Gum, Sodium Hydroxide, Sunflower Lecithin, Xanthan Gum, Allantoin, Chamomile Extract, Sea Buckthorn Extract, Sacha Inchi Extract, Grape Seed Extract, Kaolin Clay, Silk Peptides, Sodium Lactate, Sodium Citrate.

Today was a great way to finish my first taste of the samples; I feel like I’ve come full circle.

Initially, to my nose, Flight’s scent is almost reminiscent of Absinthe & Leather. Flight is just a bit more sharp and lifted in its scents from the darker/deeper A&L profile. It has almost exactly the same performance qualities as well. Perhaps it is the same base soap?

The sage and tobacco really pop out to me in this one. These more apparent notes with the overall scent is very pleasing pre, during, and post shave. For those worried about the strength of scent, it does mellow out a bit during the shave. Overall I’d place this right under A&L in terms of likability of scent and on par with it in terms of performance (both right under Coattails).

I must be a beef tallow guy because this soap just performed admirably all the way through the shave. The slickness and glide was great for both my Feather AC SS and my RR Baby Smooth. I had to do a bit of extra clean up today, but a dab here and there of extra lather and it was no problem.

My skin felt very hydrated throughout the shave and the post shave “lather soak” was very nice. The last 5 days with Mohammed’s soaps have left my face feeling very pampered and the skin supple, which is nice when one spends most of the day sweating and working hard!

Needless to say, a great 2 pass shave. Finished with Tiki: The Captain balm.

I did try/retry 2 things today. I retried doing my lather soak after the alum; I can confirm it does not work for me as it killed some of the lather again. So from now on it will always be lather soak > cold rinse > alum > cold rinse > AS for me in the post shave. Second, I tried a little of a cold shave today. It took some adjustment (and extra care with the Feather) since it is actually harder to feel the razor/blade on my skin. It wasn’t bad, I just think the warm shave feels more luxurious for now. I’ll revisit some other day...maybe on a Proraso Green day; it’ll be like sticking my face in a bucket of ice water!

So to review Mohammed’s soaps for myself and order my preferences:

Scent:
1) Absinthe & Leather
2) Flight
3) Coattails
4) Angel
5) Yuzu

Performance:
1) Coattails
2) A&L, Flight
3) Angel
4)Yuzu

Overall preference: Absinthe & Leather

Nice shave today Chris, and great review of the GD soaps. I haven't had the opportunity to try any yet, but their scent profiles seem to be outside of my wheel house for the time being, though the duck fat soap that was like an Earl Grey tea sounded interesting...

Thanks! This is really my first experience of a US artisan soap and you can color me impressed!

The absinthe & leather sounds intriguing.

Rich and deep scent for me. If it had the performance of Coattails, it’d be mighty tempting, even without (only talking about a very minor step down here) it’s still good!

Nice shave and good reviews. Keep trying new things and you will find out what works for you.

I am a cold water shaver. Hot water and lather didn't do much for me and I find my shaves more enjoyable. YMMV.

Just got caught up, Chris. Nice job!

As for the Veg, here's what I think.

Out of the plastic bottle, it smells like cat spray. But if you decant it into a glass bottle and wait about 4 weeks or so, it smells like cat spray. ;-)

Lol! I was waiting for the ray of hope at the end of your post...but it never came! ?

I forgot to mention in my shave, the new blade in the RR BS made a huge difference today. I also adjusted some of my angles, particularly my ATG, to a hybrid XTG/ATG which worked more smoothly with this razor.

Great reviews of the GD soaps! I have a question though. You mentioned a lather soak. Are you simply re-lathering your face after your last pass and letting it sit for a bit before just rinsing it off? Is this to help hydrate the skin?

You guessed it! It’s something I’ve been doing for a while now to maximize the benefits of the soaps. I wash it off just before it starts to dry or once my gear is clean, whichever comes first.

In other news, I stopped by a nearby Chipotle looking for the dispenser bottles. It was full of youngins who were entirely unhelpful. I’ll have to try a different day!

Oh, part of an earlier inquiry in how to improve Pinaud. A majority consensus is to decant them into glass bottles. The hot sauce bottles “should” be easy to come by and have a flow limiter already.

How did I get this far behind?

Anyways, a good shave, a so so shave, and a great shave! Great reviews Chris!
