If you have to do something...

Fair assessment. I steer away from the sweetness you crave (boy this kid has some adventures coming in the next bottles) but the double oaked has enough depth for me to enjoy. “Hearty sip” is a good turn of phrase.

Who knows?! Maybe I’ll turn into a Ron Swanson Jr after this is all through!

Shave #1 (452 Open Blade Shaves) of 2021:

Gear: Blackland Vector, Schick Proline
blade, RR 400 synth brush, LNHC Barber Shoppe soap, homemade witch hazel/aloe mix, LNHC Barber Shoppe post shave elixir, and Encre Noire to finish!

Corona Virus Official Day 292:

Starting 2021 off with a bang! Slept in, woke up to no alarm, and got a superb shave to start the day!

Switched to the Vector for the first shave of the year. This would make shave 10 on the Proline and it’s still going strong! These Prolines have really kicked me off being on the fence about the Vector and helped me enjoy it again. I’m just sorry I didn’t try them sooner! Started the 3017 of my 3/4 ish tub of LNHC Barber Shoppe...so you know the next month, give or take, of shaves is going to be excellent, particularly with the post shave elixir to right all wrongs.

Nothing on the docket today. Last night went pretty well. We rang in the New Year with snacks and treats, some fun games of Mario Party on the Switch, and avoided all the normal New Years show garbage by watching the count down in...wait for it...Animal Crossing! Yep...totally fun, family friendly, and no drama.

Have a great Friday all! Happy New Year!

The wife and I were jumping back and forth between ABC and NBC before I jumped on the zoom call. NBC was running some sort of viral video hitlist, which was funny at times. ABC had Dick Clark’s New Years Rockin’ Eve as usual. I only knew 2 or 3 of the scheduled performers, none of which rocked 🤦🏻‍♂️

That’s what we used to do too when it was the last generation of TV personalities, like Dick...but for the most part (IMO) now it’s become just another ad fest with poor content. 🤷‍♂️

Tonight is 1/3 of bottle #4 - Johnnie Walker Green Label Blended Malt Scotch 15 year

Tonight’s sample is going to be taken neat. Tonight, before the taste, I had a dinner of a Beijing Beef bowl from Panda Express (sweet and savory).

Johnnie Walker seems to be a staple in folks’ home bars as well. I’ve never tried it though (any of its various labels). 15 years sounds like a pretty decent age statement. I didn’t realize it was a blend as well, so that’s a surprise! This might be the oldest whiskey I’ve knowingly tasted! From what I understand, “younger” whiskeys tend to have a lot of bite and burning, and the flavors are not well developed. Aging whiskey seems to provide better depth and flavors? I think that’s right.

First, a few sniffs after the dram is poured. If I read long with tasting notes of another reviewer, even then it’s hard to pick up what I’m smelling. I can only smell it for the briefest second before it smells “dry” and muted. I think I smell some citrus as with most whiskeys, some type of lighter fruit, a hint of smoke and peat, and some butter. The official notes say there is a sandalwood quality...I don’t quite get that but it could be the “dryness” I’m perceiving.

Naked Grouse is the blended malt to beat currently...let’s see!

So what does Johnnie Walker Green Label taste like? Initially I get a moderate hit of scotchy fire. It mellows quite quickly though. The malt and peat become pronounced. The light fruit remains in the background. There is a decent amount of char on the back of the tongue.

I think the flavors are more developed, as expected, than Monkey Shoulder, so it wins out over it in that regard but I don’t think this would be a purchase for me, it’s only my pricey side and the char, while palatable, is not what I’d want. The novelty and fun taste of the sherried Naked Grouse wins out again.

Gear: Blackland Vector, Schick Proline
blade, RR Big Bruce synth brush, LNHC Barber Shoppe soap, homemade witch hazel/aloe mix, LNHC Barber Shoppe post shave elixir, and Penhaligon’s Sartorial clone oil to finish!

Corona Virus Official Day 293:

Well...instead of a nice sleep-in for my last day off before work, I got a nice, early wake up to get the dogs out the door. Unfortunately it was about the time I’d normally wake up for a work day...so my brain and body kicked into gear. What’s 3-4 hours less sleep eh? 🤷‍♂️

Great shower n shave though. This CBL shampoo bar really strips the oils! I can barely run my hand through my hair washing it out lol! It seems to be doing a good job though, as is the PDP bar. So they will continue to be used until/if something changes. Shave #11 on the Proline. Not bad! I resisted doing extra cleanup today so that always helps things...resisting is hard though!

Currently drooling over some Kirsten pipes...trying to decide if I should pull the trigger on something estate, or new directly from the artisan, or if I should even pull the trigger at all...itchy AD fingers! 🤦‍♂️

Hope you all have a great Saturday!

Tonight is 1/3 of bottle #5 - Sazerac Straight Rye

Tonight’s sample is going to be taken neat. Tonight, before the taste, I had a dinner of a Chili over rice (spicy and savory).

Whiskey DJ DaveyDave is really pushing my whiskey comfort boundaries here! Heard of Sazerac Rye before but I’ve never tried. I have purposefully avoided anything labeled with “rye” because they aren’t supposed to be on the sweeter side. It’s supposed to be a key component in a proprietary drink though...which sounded pretty interesting. Oh well, it is from Buffalo Trace distillery, so it’s got that going! Dave’s the mix master for this wild ride!

First, a few sniffs after the dram is poured. It smells of hints of Buffalo Trace bourbon. If I read long with tasting notes of another reviewer, it’s still hard to pick things out. It’s very smooth smelling...definitely getting the citrus of orange and anise.

So what does Sazerac Straight Rye taste like? Phew...that’s is a mouth full of fire up front behind that citrus/anise pop! It’s a bit of a squirt of juice, then dry and bitter orange, there’s notable char, a hint of vanilla playing around...but all still very palatable.

Color me impressed! It’s not half as bad as I thought it’d be! A buy? Eh...maybe not or maybe so if I ever got the curiosity to try the special drink it’s made for (I’ve been wanting to try an absinthe drink for sure!). It’s a fairly inexpensive bottle if I do decide to spring for it.

Sazerac is gonna have to go in it’s own rankings as I don’t think anything else has been under the rye whiskey category.

Shave #3 (452 Open Blade Shaves) of 2021:

Gear: Henson AL (Medium), Astra SP
blade, RR 400 synth brush, LNHC Barber Shoppe soap, homemade witch hazel/aloe mix, LNHC Barber Shoppe post shave elixir, and Guerlain Vetiver to finish!

Corona Virus Official Day 294:

Up early on purpose this time! Gotta make that money!

Pretty good shave with the Henson this morning. Did three passes with no cleanup. That seemed to help with the strange, slight burn I get on my trouble spots when using this razor. There was only a whisper of it today and it was quickly gone with the post shave routine. I think, if I can remember, I’ll try a different blade in this very soon (tomorrow?).

Lots of overcast here this week and hopefully some rain too here n there.

Have a blessed Sunday all!

Up for work!

Still on the 3017 train, chuggin along. Good shaves this morning!

Yep. Should be raining most of the day, which is much needed.

Have a great Monday all!

Gear: Henson AL (Medium), Astra SP
blade, RR 400 synth brush, LNHC Barber Shoppe soap, homemade witch hazel/aloe mix, LNHC Barber Shoppe post shave elixir, and Perry Ellis Oud Saffron Rose Absolute to finish!

Corona Virus Official Day 296:

Was awake for about 5 minutes before my alarm went off this morning...hate that! So I just laid there till it went off.

Same ol same ol shave wise. The Henson I feel I’ve adapted to fairly well at this point. The last couple shaves haven’t had any burn really...but that very well could be thanks to Lisa’s post shave elixir. Changed up the frag though. Almost went with Paul Sebastian but then Saffron Rose caught my eye and sounded good...and indeed it is!

Time to take down the Christmas decorations at work. It was nice while it lasted. The next major “event” will be Easter. Hopefully vaccinations and health guidelines have bettered things by then.

Have a great Tuesday all!
