Tonight is 1/3 of bottle #4 - Johnnie Walker Green Label Blended Malt Scotch 15 year
Tonight’s sample is going to be taken neat. Tonight, before the taste, I had a dinner of a Beijing Beef bowl from Panda Express (sweet and savory).
Johnnie Walker seems to be a staple in folks’ home bars as well. I’ve never tried it though (any of its various labels). 15 years sounds like a pretty decent age statement. I didn’t realize it was a blend as well, so that’s a surprise! This might be the oldest whiskey I’ve knowingly tasted! From what I understand, “younger” whiskeys tend to have a lot of bite and burning, and the flavors are not well developed. Aging whiskey seems to provide better depth and flavors? I think that’s right.
First, a few sniffs after the dram is poured. If I read long with tasting notes of another reviewer, even then it’s hard to pick up what I’m smelling. I can only smell it for the briefest second before it smells “dry” and muted. I think I smell some citrus as with most whiskeys, some type of lighter fruit, a hint of smoke and peat, and some butter. The official notes say there is a sandalwood quality...I don’t quite get that but it could be the “dryness” I’m perceiving.
Naked Grouse is the blended malt to beat currently...let’s see!
So what does Johnnie Walker Green Label taste like? Initially I get a moderate hit of scotchy fire. It mellows quite quickly though. The malt and peat become pronounced. The light fruit remains in the background. There is a decent amount of char on the back of the tongue.
I think the flavors are more developed, as expected, than Monkey Shoulder, so it wins out over it in that regard but I don’t think this would be a purchase for me, it’s only my pricey side and the char, while palatable, is not what I’d want. The novelty and fun taste of the sherried Naked Grouse wins out again.
