For the Love of Old Spice - Illini's Shave Journal

One I wish I had gotten in on the kickstarter for! Looks really fun and the components are pretty high quality!
Those deluxe and super deluxe editions sure are pretty! This is gonna be just the standard retail edition which doesn't have those fancy tokens, plastic cards, or play mats but at $25 is much more in line with what I'd be looking to spend for a 2 player dueling card game.

Think you can still pick up some of those editions directly on the Roxley website...

I may need to get this for Aidan - he loves trains!

That’s awesome that your local library has those resources available!

This was a few years ago (pre-COVID) - but I remember taking a date to a DC Bar that was themed bar - dedicated to board games.
There are SO many variants of TTR now, one for younger kids, some that play quicker, etc. I'm sure you could find one that you two would enjoy!

We've definitely been getting our tax dollars out of the library this past year, it's wonderful that they carry all kinds of board games now. Really allowed us to try all kinds of various types and titles! We don't have any board game cafes or bars out here in the suburbs, but I know there are a few downtown - would be an awesome date night for us!

Happy Friday Cadre, we made it through another week! This one was a true slog for me but happy to be here. Did manage to stop over at the local board game shop during lunch yesterday and picked up my copy of Radlands. Really nailed a wonderful combo theme of 80s neon and post-apocalyptic wastelands. Looking forward to playing it with the wife (who isn't quite as into the theme as me!)

A new trailer dropped yesterday for "Lightyear" the origin story movie for Buzz Lightyear. Toy Story came out when I was a kid and it was my favorite Disney movie, and now it happens to be my son's favorite as well. Probably still a little too young to take him to the movies when it releases, but can't wait to watch it with him later. There's also a pretty awesome remix of Bowie's Starman underpinning the trailer.

Tomorrow starts our potty training journey with the little man - Lord beer me strength!! Picked up the 2021 Laphroaig Cairdeas release last weekend and will be cracking it open tomorrow night as I'm sure I'll need a dram or 3.

Have a great weekend Cadre! Let the children boogie

I once worked for an organization that had a policy that basically Merit increases were 2% across the board. Then the managers were given the money and discretion to hand it out - but in order to “reward“ some of my superstars and give them more than the 2%, meant someone was getting 1 or 0%.
The company where I worked set an overall budgeted merit increase and distributed it similarly. I can see why companies need to do this, but it was a challenge to keep folks motivated.

Non-merit based raises (beyond COLA) are a GREAT tool to retain top talent, as those folks will be more than happy to have been rewarded the same as those in the department that slack off, and yes, everyone in the department knows who those folks are. These star performers will have absolutely no motivation to look outside the company for another job.

Oh.... wait a sec

That's how ours have previously operated too, with a bell curve of performance ratings across the employee base dictating anywhere from 1 to 5%, with most sitting at that 3%. Rumors are that this year, they are going to use the inflation adjustments to "even out" the distribution of employees within a given salary band rather than the performance rating bell curve. What that boils down to is that if you previously were a high performer and are towards the higher end of your peers, you will now be penalized with a small increase and those towards the bottom of the band getting more. Not sure how you do this without completely murdering morale for the high performing individuals, as now there is very little incentive to perform...
Something similar occasionally happened where I worked "to bring the salary ranges back in line." It was reasoned that every job position brought a certain value to the organization. A high-performer in a lower-level position was limited in the $$$ impact he/she could make, sometimes justfying a lower (or no) merit increase. The onus was placed on the employee and manager to work on career development. That was balanced that against the availability/business need of higher-level roles, whether the employee was a good fit at the next level, and even where the organization (aka a group of pointy heads) thought the employee would eventually peak. It all makes good business sense, I suppose, but it's a challenge.

Happy Monday, Cadre. Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed the Super Bowl.

Our potty training "hell weekend" as I dubbed it went significantly better than I could have imagined. My wife lead the charge with research and landed on the "Oh Crap" method where you start with them fully naked, watching for "pee signals" and running them to the potty every time to get them to first learn the association of pee and the potty, then the sensation that comes before, holding it, etc. Of course the book was required reading for me too which I did last weekend. This method did require both of us to sit there and watch him like a hawk for all hours he was awake. No TV, no phones, no distractions. Mentally exhausting but it was nice to spend so much "quality time" together without all the distractions we typically have I suppose!

He did exactly as he was supposed to, and by last night was giving clear signals that it was time to pee and even ran over to the potty on his own before it started to come. I definitely didn't give him enough credit, he was right on track with this "process." The wife will bear the brunt of it this week while I'm back to work but it should continue to get better and better. Neither of us have been this tired since he was a newborn, but the optimism was far higher last night than it was Saturday night and much higher than I anticipated.

Shaves were early in the morning and the same each day, with the Canadian Williams continuing to perform and the Bic SP really "singing" in my Red Tip SS. Averaging 1.8g per shave on my grated puck so should give up the ghost right towards the end of February.

Here's to a great week, thanks for reading!

Hope everyone had a nice Valentine's Day! Ours was very low key, made cheese fondue after the little guy went to bed and played a couple of card games. Work should be quieter this week than last which is very welcomed.

Seems that Williams might indeed be discontinued - hoping that's not the case but not looking good this time around.

Have a great day, thanks for reading!

Hump Day! Supposed to get ridiculously warm today, getting into the mid-50's before we get slammed with a winter storm tomorrow. Looks like they're projecting 6-10 more inches of snow. It's at this point in the winter, always around mid-February, that I start to really yearn for the spring.

Bit of a regression yesterday afternoon on the potty training front. Godspeed to my wife, she looks exhausted and has 100x more patience than I do. Hoping for a better day today.

Thanks for stopping by friends!
