For the Love of Old Spice - Illini's Shave Journal

Wife and I spent last night planning a late winter trip down to Florida next February. We're planning to take our little guy to Disney World for a couple days then spend 4 more in an Air B&B. Both my wife and I are huge Disney people so really looking forward to taking him to the Magic Kingdom. He'll be 18 months old which is a little young but should enjoy a lot of the rides and characters. Wife wants to stay at The Contemporary since it's so close to the park and we can walk back and forth for nap time. I've never stayed there - always felt like an overpriced Hilton especially when compared to all of the other amazingly themed Disney Resorts, but she makes a good point.

Had a flawless shave this morning with a new Lab Blue loaded into my first DE, a Maggard MR3, alongside the LEA shave stick. It's a mild, soapy scent and the lather continues to impress me. Don't love it as much as the now harder-to-find-at-a-reasonable-price Palmolive sticks, but it's great nonetheless. Chased with Thayer's Coconut Water and then a healthy dose of Nautica Voyage EdT. I can see why this one is a much loved cheapie - definitely feels like it punches above its $20 discounted price point. It's not going to knock your socks off but I've been getting very nice whiffs of the green fougère and apple notes while sitting at my desk this morning. In terms of evaluating all these cheapies to find a good summertime bottle, I think this one wins over all the Tommy Bahama variants I've tried thus far.

We are in a similar situation here. I commute to downtown Dallas and it’s usually an hour both ways on a good day. But the quiet and the sky in the country are worth the drive.
While I wouldn't call where we're at the country, a quick 5 minute drive and you're in farmland. It's not for everyone, but I love it!

I hope we can take our kids, though much older, to Disneyland now that we’re so close. I have distant but happy memories of my parent taking me when I was very young.
You guys are so close now, you have no excuse!!

Happy Monday, Cadre! Time to do a little journal catch up.

Friday night the wife and I went to a White Sox game with a bunch of friends for the first time since 2019. We tailgated before the game, the Sox won, and there were after game fireworks. It felt great to be doing something so normal. Of course it looks like we'll be having to wear masks indoors including my office for the foreseeable future now, so 2 steps forward and 1 step back.

Saturday we took my son to the zoo and were able to see the dolphin show for the first time. It just opened back up a week ago and he really enjoyed it. Yesterday we spent the day out with my wife's family out in the country. Spent the afternoon shooting the crossbows in prep for hunting season to start up October 1. I didn't grow up around hunting but am going to try and get my son accustomed to it as soon as he's old enough.

Shaves were nice and "cold" all weekend. Really loving this bottle of Nautica Voyage sent to my be a fellow wetshaver who just wasn't a fan (he also included a bottle of Grey Flannel!) Also used a nice sample of YSL L'Homme Le Parfum procured from the local Macy's and it was lovely. Some nice blue notes alongside the classic L'Homme profile. I can see why some think it's boring but also why it could also be a real compliment getter!

When my stepson was young, I took him to the Hunter Safely course. It was a physical class, not the online version. It was very informative and a lot of fun.
Since I was born after 1980 I had to take one and ultimately my son will too. The field day was definitely enjoyable - not sure what they're doing now with Covid restrictions but since we're probably a decade out from my son taking it, I'm not worried quite yet
Sounds like a fantastic weekend!
That it was Brian!!

It has been a surprisingly quiet start to the week at work, which is always welcome! So much so that I was able to go to our neighborhood pool for 45 minutes during lunch with the wife and son. If that's not a Tuesday win, I'm not sure what is!

Real quick shave after the pool before getting back to work this afternoon. Sometimes I'm just in the mood for a nice Barbasol Original shave and today was one of them. DFS as always!

LOL I know not something I ever thought would be possible. That said, I can say the same for the last 16 or so months...

Made it to Hump Day which means the week is half over for me already since I'm off this Friday! Great shave with the CBL iColoniali, new Lab Blue, and chased with Skin Bracer and Nautica Voyage EdT. Have a great one, Cadre!

Last work day of this week for me! They officially sent the note requiring everyone to wear masks fulltime in the office for now. That's resulted in most of us deciding to just WFH because there's really no reason to go into the office when we can't sit together in conference rooms. Remember seeing articles that the Spanish Flu took 3 years to subside, and with how much of our population refuses the vaccine I'm beginning to believe it'll take equally as long for Covid. It's frustrating for us but I count myself lucky that I'm not a doctor or nurse who is truly at risk and is particularly affected by these variants.

Anyways, this morning's shave was awesome and the cherry & ginger combo was great.

Happy Monday, Cadre. Another weekend that went far too fast.

Friday I took off of work and it was "Mommy Day." My wife got the entire day to herself to relax as she saw fit and I took care of our son from sun up to sun down. It's days like this that make me realize and appreciate how exhausting being a full-time mother is. Sure there are days where I'd love to take care of him instead of working, just like there are days she'd rather go back to work. But man is changing, feeding, entertaining, etc. all day every day more than a full-time job. Not only does she do all of that, but manages to keep the house in tip top shape, do all of the shopping, cooking, cleaning, etc. I am a lucky lucky man!

Saturday we finally had the chance to celebrate my sister graduating with her PhD in clinical psychology with the extended family. She officially graduated last spring but obviously the celebrations were put on indefinite hold. With everyone fully vaccinated we gathered at my parent's place and my son got to meet some second cousins for the first time. It was a lot of fun.

Yesterday my FIL and I built a swing set in our backyard. We had been waiting for lumber prices to return towards something resembling sane and while still high, not as bad as before. Of course, it was over 100* with the heat index yesterday and already felt like 88* when we started at 8am. Just a classic A-Frame style built from cedar with room for 3 swings, although right now it has a Little Tikes baby swing and one adult swing. I'm not going to enjoy having to try and mow the grass around it now, but my son was already ecstatic during his inaugural swing yesterday and that makes everything worth it, doesn't it?!

Shaves were great the past 3 days as well. Nothing too earth-shattering. I continue to love the retro 90's nostalgia the Michael Jordan EdC brings each time I use it. And I used a sample of the Barbasol 1919 shave cream yesterday and was very impressed with how slick it was. It's not like any of the other brushless creams I've used since it didn't really look like it did much of anything when rubbed into the stubble. But holy moly was it slick. So much residual slickness that I didn't need to reapply anything after rinsing the first pass away for my XTG/ATG hybrid clean up 2nd pass. It's not something I'd use every day, but the performance was stellar and scent very pleasant. They don't carry it at Walmart or Target for some reason, but they do at Menards of all places. So I picked up a full size tube for $3.99 last night while there picking up some other home improvement items.

Plenty of meetings to keep me busy this morning so not sure what the shave will be after my lunchtime shower yet. One of the beauties of continued WFH I suppose!
