For the Love of Old Spice - Illini's Shave Journal

Happy Monday, Cadre. Hope everyone had a nice Father's Day weekend.

Not going to post SOTDs from the weekend as some really bad storms tore through the Chicagoland area last night around 11pm. We were woken up by the tornado sirens and promptly headed to the basement. I've been through many tornado warnings and normally it's just due to rotation being spotted in a storm. Well, this time there was an actual tornado, and it was about a mile north of us. Didn't realize how serious it was until I hopped on Twitter once we were safely in the basement. Thankfully we are all okay and didn't suffer any damage here, but the neighborhood behind our local grocery store didn't fare as well. Not sure if the NWS has finalized anything but this was a pretty big and destructive tornado across our Southwest suburbs. Never a good thing when they're doing live coverage on the Today show from a street you drive down many times a week. Mother Nature is not something to ever take for granted, and I'm thankful we escaped the storm without damage. It is the stuff like this that really puts things into perspective awfully quick.

Glad you and the fam are okay.

It certainly does. Glad you and your family came out unscathed.
Thank you Bruce!
Glad you’re safe Ryan! That brand new 30 year roof would have kicked the bucket pretty quick! 😂
After everything was over and we were laying in bed around 1am, I told my wife I would have absolutely lost my mind if our brand new roof paid for completely out of pocket had been damaged and required a new one that would have been covered through the homeowners!!

Lot going on this past weekend, but I found out on Friday that they plan to go with the other internal candidate for the role I was looking at. Not the way I wanted things to play out but so these things go sometimes.

In better news, today is my birthday! And as such, had to break out my favorite scent in the den right now, Sea Spice Lime, as well as my favorite razor as well as an old standby in the brush department. The shave was absolutely flawless and a great way to start the birthday. Just a normal work day, but I'm going to my son's swim lesson with my wife at 4:30 then getting dinner with my parents after. Will be a very nice way to celebrate!

Thank you all for the birthday wishes! Yesterday was awesome, I'm generally a birthday "curmudgeon" as coined by my wife since I don't enjoy doing much celebrating, so watching my son's swim lessons with dinner and cake after was a great way to celebrate. Also appreciate the comments around the job - trying to remember that everything happens for a reason so hopefully something even better comes along soon.

Finally getting some much needed rain around here, with quite a bit forecast over the next 3-4 days. If it all pans out the way they're saying, we might actually lift ourselves out of this drought which would be great going into July. Probably means we'll get all of an inch or so of rain but we'll see!

Not particularly hot today so reached for the Captain's Choice 45th Parallel set. Just a great cherry scent that I think works just about year-round!

The last couple of shaves with the journeyed Lab Blue were noticeably rougher than what I enjoy. The first shave I chalked up to just an off day. But yesterday was more of the same. Thought I'd break out a new blade today to reset my memory of what a blade should feel like. Today was absolutely flawless with a new Lab Blue loaded up in the NEW LC. I'll give the old Lab Blue one more shot tomorrow morning, but thinking I'm at the end of this much-longer-than-anticipated journey. Have a great Thursday Cadre, we're almost there!

Happy Monday, Cadre! I hope you had a great weekend. It was an extremely busy one for us - with most of "life" being on pause for the last 16 or so months, I had forgotten how exhausting most weekends were in terms of social obligations!

My SIL graduated from Northwestern PT school Friday, so we spend the day downtown with her and the rest of my in-laws family. Was a nice day despite the rainy weather. Saturday we spend celebrating a belated Father's Day with my dad and the rest of my family, and yesterday we spent back downtown with my wife's friends and finished with trivia night at an old bar we frequented when living in the city. Last night was the first time my wife had spent the night away from our son since he was born (I have been away on a couple trips since then) and she was a little sad. But he did super well for my MIL and FIL!

I also had a solo Walmart trip (no wife or son in tow) for the first time in a very long time yesterday, so I stopped by the frag aisle just to see what was going on. I've never been much of a frag guy, sticking to AS splashes, mostly because of my general desire to not be "that guy" at the office but also due to the price. I was shocked at how many men's frags our local Walmart stocked, both designer and "dupes." And while I wasn't ready to feel the wrath of the wife and buy a $60 bottle of EdT, I did pick up "Classic Match Blue," a dupe of Polo Blue for all of $8. I love the Polo Blue scent, and for $8 even the wife couldn't protest. I'm sure it's not as complex as true Polo Blue, but felt like a good baby step to see if EdT's are something I'll be interested in. Talk about a potentially EXPENSIVE rabbit hole to be tiptoeing around...

Shaves were pretty quick most of the weekend, with a couple of Barbasol ones thrown in. I will say that the Lab Blue performed MUCH better on Friday and the rest of the weekend, so it STILL has not been formally retired. Talk about mind-blowing!
