Doug's Journal of Shaving Happiness v2.0

Great result with the ShurEdge Doug. Keep at it. Your next shave, even with the same razor, is likely to disappoint you over this result. But do not be discouraged. Stick with it, and this result can become the new normal. I'm hoping they replace the QA position soon for you so that the work load is not too great.

My first brush was a VDH boar. I have an Omega 10777, a couple of vintage Ever-Ready boars, and one other no-name boar. I also have the synthetic version of the Omega Pro, but that probably doesn't count.

Is there a boar that I should try?

Definitely!. Try some that have more loft. I'd recommend the following:

Omega 10048 (Pro 48). This is about a 28/65.
Omega 10049 (Pro 49). This is about a 28/60.
Zenith. Get the 26/64.
Semogue 1305. 22/55.

The Omega Pro 48 and the Zenith are my favorite boar brushes now. I actually much prefer the Omega 48, with the extra loft, over the 49.

I haven’t tried the RR Santal Royale AS, but I have used the soap. It does have an underlying sandalwood scent, but is much more complex than that. The only way I can describe it is “lordly” and heady; something a person would wear going to the English courts many centuries ago. The scent is very strong but good.

This is a pretty good description. I'm horrible at describing scents, but this makes total sense for this scent.

Great Shave Doug! Thanks for the recommendation on the RR Santal Royale. I'm a sucker for a good sandalwood scent! I have the Omega Pro 49 myself and honestly it's the only boar brush I keep using. It's big but there is something about that brush that I like as well as others. Plus you don't break the bank on it.
Thanks!

I will add those to my wish list. We shall see how they compare to the SOC.

This is a fabulous description of the RR SR.

Thanks, Walt. I just sent a few razors to Dave (Xeno) for some stone love, so the ShurEdge will probably get called up again this coming Saturday.

Overview
Day #1 of the Parker Premium Platinum DE shave review.

Shave Quality
Three passes (WTG, XTG, XTG) and I am a very comfortable BBS-. Honestly, it felt like I could have gone for a fourth pass. The alum had next to no feedback today. I took my time building the lather and ended up with it being spot on. The only strange thing is that my face felt a tiny bit itchy on my cheeks until I put the NIvea PSB on my face. Maybe there is something in the blade coating that I reacted to? Whatever it was only lasted for a few seconds.

Gear
The 34c is my favorite DE, so naturally I started this multi-day shave review with it.

The blade on day one was sharp and smooth. It removed the stubble comfortably and efficiently. Besides one of the coatings possibly reacting with my skin, the blade performed excellently and without irritation.

Other Thoughts

eBay is a dangerous place.

Thank you for reading and commenting on my journal. I hope you all have a great day and stellar shaves.

eBay is a dangerous place...

It certainly can be.

Great shave Doug, and you are correct, eBay can be quite dangerous. I try to stay away as I should be satisfied with my current gaggle of stuff, but every now and then I get a wild hair.

Overview
Day #2 of the Parker Premium Platinum DE shave review. Also my first use of vintage Avon AS.

Shave Quality
Two passes today with some cleanup on the neck. I would call it DFS+, almost BBS-. I avoided excess irritation until the cleanup pass. In retrospect I probably should have stopped at the end of the second pass. Overall it was a good shave. The lather was good, but a little watery. I guess the Stirling has a narrower water band than I have been assuming.

Gear
The blade on day two remained sharp and smooth, removing the stubble comfortably and efficiently. There was no itchy feeling today. Other than that the blade was not noticeably different in performance. There was more blade-feel due to the different razor, but no tugging, pulling, or skipping.

All the Avon talk recently reminded me that I own a single, full bottle of Avon Windjammer Aftershave that I had never used. So, today was the day that I decided to give it a try. It is a decent aftershave. I am not sure if I like it yet, but I am very far from hating it. The scent is very pleasant. Perhaps I will look around on eBay and get myself a bottle of each of the others. Well, except for the Island Lime. My face doesn't like anything lime.

Other Thoughts
I need to figure out how to tag other users on this new platform.

Thank you for reading and commenting on my journal. I hope you have a great day and stellar shaves, Cadre.
